Why men won't marry you

That’s a question Peter Lloyd tackles in a series in London’s Daily Mail about Britain’s marriage rate, which is at its lowest level since 1895. “The state of matrimony is not just ailing. It is dying out faster than a mobile phone battery,” Lloyd writes. “For an army of women, Mr. Right is simply not there, no matter how hard they look for him.”

Yep, been there and done that. Mine already spoke English before she came to the U.S. She got thoroughly Americanized, even though I told her about that problem, it happened anyway. She was not a gold digger, although some of them are. She just had too many single friends. Several years later, she kind of hinted around that maybe she had acted a little rash, but the damage had been done. I wanted no part of it. I found that living well, was the best revenge. I got a younger woman (see profile page) The rest is history as they say.

The problem with overseas women, as you discovered, is what happens when you bring them to the US. The best solution is to go live over there, keep your assets outside the reach of their divorce courts, and always maintain the option of leaving. If she just sees you as her ticket to get a Green Card, she will leave (and good riddance)

Commentator Fred Reed did that, got himself a lovely Mexican woman, and now lives in Mexico with her.

A friend of my wife who is in a great many respects a brilliant guy married what I immediately thought of as a losers when I met her.

Anyway, they got divorced. She got a very nice house and pretty much everything else.

The guy makes close to 6 figures but drives an old beater and lives in the parents basement last I heard.

If it were me, I would try to disappear overseas. Figure a good chemist would be welcome in a lot of places where it would be tough to get at.

Ladies, I think you’ll see this as very harsh, but I have observed this first hand.

I've seen the other side of the story. I've known quite a few women whose husbands ditched them (after 20 or more years of marriage) for "newer models". These were good, faithful Christian women who were devoted to their families.

Brother, I not only feel your pain, I’m there, too. Right down to my military retirement I sweated so hard to get—half is now hers; forever.

I will never marry again. Never.

If I change my mind, it’s not me, but some demon who has possessed me. Please shoot me then.

Well said, BJ! Thanks.

Y’all others who want to weigh in and tell me I’m wrong—screw you, you have not felt my pain, rest assured. Not even Adolph Hitler deserved what I got.

Well, when I got married, I did so in a church and vowed before God to love, honor, and cherish my husband. I take that vow seriously. I’m guessing that’s why husband and I will be married near 20 years soon.

Why buy the cow when you get the milk for free is nasty, spiteful, vulgar, entitled, and condescending?

Fixed it.

"I’m 44 and I’ll give ya my opinion on why. Women offer less as wives than before. Do the young women keep home as well as women from even 30 years ago? Do these women expect a man to do more and more stuff that was traditionally women’s work? Are today’s women more selfless or more self centered than in the past?"

I don't think young girls know the first thing about cooking or cleaning, nor do they want to know. Many of them think it's beneath them. I've been married 18 years; I developed an interest in cooking when I was in junior high. I used to work outside the home, but not anymore. Now my job is the house, while my husband's is outside the house.

"My observation is that men simply get a lower quality woman by and large today. Oh yah the women tend to be fatter and have short hair."

Can't blame it all on the women, BJI. I'm the first to admit that feminism has ruined so many women to the point of having outright contempt for men.

Yeah, there are women who let themselves go. But on the other hand, there are men who develop guts that make them look like they're thirty months pregnant, and still think they deserve a pretty wife, so they go for a mail-order bride. Then there are the metrosexuals and perpetual adolescent males. Both sexes are screwed up.

"And the flip side of staying single is that it is better than ever."

I think it's MUCH better to be single than to be mismatched in marriage. But people tend to get married too quickly without knowing the other person, and then wonder what went wrong.

My husband and I were together for 2 1/2 years before we married. We knew without a doubt we were the other's soul mate, and we also knew that divorce would never be an option.

Downthread you said you're open to trying again. I encourage it. Just take your time. When marriage is right, there's nothing better.

You have nailed it!

“They want those things of course. But as part of the working career woman package.”

The fact is women CANNOT WORK and be any kind of decent wife and mother. Feminism has killed a lot marriage and has wrecked our society.

"Who remembers when divorced women bore a huge negative stigma? I do. (I am 51 BTW.) I am not saying it was right. But I have noticed the stigma seems to have disappeared. I think divorced men also bore a stigma but not nearly as bad as women."

I'm your age and I agree with you completely. Hallmark even sells cards celebrating divorce.

My parents were middle-aged when they had me; there was no divorce on either side of the family. Unfortunately, it's common among my husband's family. It sounds naive, but I never personally experienced family divorce until my husband's sister's marriage broke up. It bothered me terribly. Everyone else was pretty much, "That's too bad, but it happens. Oh, well." I just couldn't get over the fact that the brother-in-law we were so close with was here, and then gone, never to be heard from again. It was almost like a death.

I was lucky enough to marry an Asian woman who had lived here a long time, already become a citizen, and had not become Americanized at all. She doesn't watch US television and considers white American women lazy, fat, surgically-altered golddiggers...so she doesn't have any single American friends to negatively influence her. And since she's kind of a dragon lady, her single Asian friends do whatever she tells them to. :)

On the other hand, I've seen the other side. The two of us have watched the process unfold as a friend of ours married a Philippine woman and brought her to the US over the last three years. We even gave her a job in our company. But she became Americanized at an alarming rate - so much so that our friend wants to move back to the Philippines with her before any more damage is done.

It's unfair to blame women as a group - the Gramscian-Hollywood culture in this country has become so toxic that it requires great strength of character for a man or a woman of any background to overcome its influences and remain an independent thinker.

"I've actually had women get pissed when I held a door open. She looked at me and said "I can open MY OWN door." I just looked at her and said, "then you can find your own way home too" and left her there. "

I love this. :)

What American women have lost sight of is that “I do” also means “I will.” Very often TV and movie plots involve wives extorting their husbands by withholding sex. This is a great moral wrong. Of course husbands must be considerate of their wives’ physical and emotional condition, but wives must be considerate of their husbands’ needs.

Agreed about the moral wrong and agree about being considerate. Wish that had been something I had known when I was much younger.

There are men who do this as well, you know.

The article said not one word about true emotional intimacy.

Expectations are often much too high. The Peggy Lee song "Is That all There Is?" says it all for me.

Folks who are in a successful marriage relationship know that true loving is an active verb.....it's not a feeling. It's something you do after committing to do it, at the altar, in front of family and associates.

"Why buy the cow when you get the milk for free?"

Current "relationship"... not living together but she's cute in a quirky Kristy McNichol sort of way. and she's got a killer figure and is quite adept in the sack (yea, me!). Early 50s (as am I) and she is well read and we can enjoy intelligent conversation together and we have many interests in common.

Um, now, the bad part... (things I have learned since) She's a liberal. She curses like a drunken sailor. She has a dead-beat ex who she swears will be hiding in her bushes one night to pull an O.J. on her hot little heiney. She has a idiot 19-year old son who is in college and she has bailed out of the pokey on two occasions (Freshman year still) costing her a couple of grand each time. She's got a retarded little 7 year old dog that won't house train and is always leaving presents in one form or another around the house, is a vicious little critter that attacks anybody who enters the house (literally an ankle biter) and she won't get rid of the animal despite having to replace carpets and re-upholster a couple of chairs and knowingly admitting that the dog will live another 10+ years. Now, I'm a dog lover but... this little piece of crap ceased being a dog years ago. Now it's just evil.

And lately she's been wondering if I thought about maybe the two of us living together. HaHa! Live together... too funny. Sigh...Well, it's been fun, but I think now I'm just playing out the clock. Did I mention she's got a nice butt and the sex is awesome?... :-)

The root cause is a great falling away from religious faith and marriage. Fornicators believe the law does not apply to them. The spice must flow.

“There are men who do this as well, you know.”

Ain’t the same. Women are like camels; they can go without sex for *years* if they want to, with, seemingly, not much discomfort.

“Niles gotta have it,” as Niles Crane hilariously growled on “Frasier.” Women *never* gotta have it like men gotta have it.
