How Tippi Hedren made Vietnamese refugees into nail salon magnates
BBC News Magazine ^ | 3 May 2015 | Regan Morris

When actress Tippi Hedren visited a Vietnamese refugee camp in California 40 years ago, the Hollywood star's long, polished fingernails dazzled the women there.

Hedren flew in her personal manicurist to teach a group of 20 refugees the art of manicures. Those 20 women - mainly the wives of high-ranking military officers and at least one woman who worked in military intelligence - went on to transform the industry, which is now worth about $8bn (£5.2bn) and is dominated by Vietnamese Americans.

"We were trying to find vocations for them," says Hedren, who is perhaps best known for starring in Alfred Hitchcock's The Birds and for running a wildcat sanctuary at her home in Southern California.

"I brought in seamstresses and typists - any way for them to learn something. And they loved my fingernails."

Hope Village, the refugee camp, was in Northern California near Sacramento. Aside from flying in her personal manicurist, Hedren recruited a local beauty school to help teach the women. When they graduated, Hedren helped get them jobs all over Southern California.

"I loved these women so much that I wanted something good to happen for them after losing literally everything," Hedren told the BBC from a museum she is building next to her home. The museum includes Hollywood memorabilia, a few photos of the women at Camp Hope and awards she's won from the nail care industry.

"Some of them lost their entire family and everything they had in Vietnam: their homes; their jobs; their friends - everything was gone. They lost even their own country."

The Vietnamese gave the nail salon business a radical makeover.

So who taught the Cambodians to make donuts?

Probably Orson Welles

They are spreading like kudzu all over Los Angeles. Every mini-mall has cars pouring out of limited parking for cheap manicures.

You walk in and 30-40 Vietnamese women sit on pads close to the floor.

Making money? Capitalism? Sure, go for it ... I have no objection. But they edged my favorite Chines place from the mini-mall, a dry cleaners and a froyo place.

I have been going to my Vietnamese nail salon for about 16 years now. They are on their 2nd owner. family member sold it to a family member, and it is mostly all family that works there.
The previous owner and I had several conversations. Very pro American and anti communist. His mom and dad are still in Vietnam and he still spends a couple of months a year there visiting them. He knows what Communism is.

>> It's really pretty interesting to read up on the Patel clan <<

I hadn't thought much about the names of the motel owners, only that they seemed Hindu-ish.

But next time I stay at a Super 8 or La Quinta, I'll be on the lookout for the Patel moniker!

Not sure but I believe the "Patel" is Hindi for "Jones". In Polish it would be "Gorski".

We’re a nation of immigrants, as they say.

Of course, we’d be telling filthy racist delusional lies and conducting genocide on indigenous peoples pointing out how American exceptionalism produces exceptional results.

She has always been a classy lady. Hard to believe she is the mother of Melanie Griffith.

I’ve wondered about other immigrant groups such as you describe as well.

And it makes me wonder, could blacks, particularly those who want to escape the ghetto, ever find their niche and be able to run a business and escape ghetto life???

On a road trip a couple of years ago, we stopped at a Super 8 and mentioned to "Mrs. Patel" that we were headed up to Melrose, Minnesota - where we'd stayed a couple of previous times at the Super 8 there, where we'd become friendly with those Patels....and, yes; she told us they were relatives.

Blacks used to have more small businesses such as dry cleaners and convenience stores before LBJ gave them the Great Society and destroyed the black family.

The other races listed above still have nuclear families.

True. However, at my place, the only thing they say to me in English is, “You pay me now?”

“The acupressure salons are far more exciting than the nail salons.”

...no “happy endings”, though.

Actually, I heard from a Patel that in old times, many Indian people really didn’t have a last name the way that we understand it. When they moved to the big city, they needed one. So, what to do? The Patels were very successful and wealthy...so why not just take the last name of “Rockefeller”?

She was also very good in Marnie. I think she got short changed by the critics in both those roles.

Agree. LBJ’s Great Society turned out to be anything but.
