MERIWETHER COUNTY, Ga. -A Meriwether County high school principal claims he was fired after he prayed with a group of students during a volunteer Christian meeting.
Dr. Michael Lehr said he just wants the facts to come out and that he's relying on his faith to get him through this.
News Radio 106.7's Nathalie Pozo spoke with several students and parents who are outraged this happened to what they call a kind, dedicated, well respected man. Now, the community is rallying behind him.
“It is breaking our hearts its breaking our hearts… because it is not supposed to be like this,” one parent said.
Last Wednesday, during a volunteer Fellowship of Christian Athletes meeting, the Manchester High School principal said he filled in for the organization's leader and read scripture as well as prayed with students in attendance.
“Because this is a Christian community and I want my daughter to pray,” said another parent.
Dr. Lehr who did not want to speak on camera said he had his annual evaluation two days later with the county's school superintendent. He says at that meeting, Superintendent Carol Lane put him on indefinite administrative leave for the remainder of his contract which expires in June for leading prayers at the FCA meeting.
“What do you expect at a Christian meeting except prayer and Bible reading,” one parent noted.
“I want prayer in this school. I am proud to see our football team take a knee and pray before and after games. And also in clubs and we're just shocked,” said parent Angila Waddell.

And for the record, I would not be fine with 35. Foreign crap doesn’t need to be a centerpiece in an American school. That is where we teach our children. I wouldn’t want the history classes to be centered on England or African history.

I would be OK with your post 35. I was also OK in the 70s when we students met and prayed on campus even after the school threatened to call the cops. My right to pray is not limited by the government.

If freedom of religion only applies to when we are inside a church, we have no freedom of religion at all. Others have no right to be free FROM religion or religious people. Who you invite into your home is your business. What goes on with public property falls under normal standards of freedom of speech and religion - if it is not disruptive, harmful, or detrimental to others, then it should be OK.
Killing chickens would not be acceptable. Marching around praying loudly would not. Prayer calls would not. All are disruptive. But an Atheists Club or Club of Islam or Christian Club or LDS (not LSD!) Club ought to be able to meet and to pray during their meetings. When freedom is extended to all, there is no endorsement of one religion over another.

I think this actually got ruled on by SCOTUS not too long ago. IIRC, prohibiting animal sacrifice with respect to religion is unconstitutional. Hopefully the Santeria prayer club will clean up after itself.

There is no possible way for the government school to resolve this issue in a religiously neutral manner. **Any** decision made will favor one religious worldview ( godless or God-centered) and undermine the deeply held beliefs of the other. Any decision made that favors one worldview ( godless or God-centered) will have NON-neutral content and NON-neutral consequences for all the children who will be influenced by the school's example.
Fundamentally forced tax-funded schooling and forced attendance at government schools violates every principle of the First Amendment ( speech, press, assembly, and free exercise of religion). Government schools are a freedom of conscience abomination for all who are forced to attend and all who are forced to pay for it.
Fundamentally, it is impossible to have a religiously, culturally, and politically neutral education. Such a state of neutrality can not exist in the mind of any sentient human.
In fact, most of what government does has some non-neutral cultural, religious, and political content and consequences. It is for this reason government should be as limited in scope as possible and as locally controlled as possible. A good rule is to apply is if the service or product can be found in any Yellow Pages then the government should not be doing it and if absolutely needed should be contracted out to private businesses.
Schools for newborns up to post-college graduate schools are found in the Yellow Pages. This means that government should get out of that business.
I, too, am horrified with Satanism. It is an extreme example. However....Islam will not be and is already included in the curriculum of many school districts.
The best way to counter the spread of false religions is not to have generally godless and secular government schools with a sprinkling of lukewarm and generic Christianity such as my grandmother attended ( born 1894). The risk is that children will learn to be casual, generic, and lukewarm about God and faith.
Solution: Private schools that are NOT lukewarm about their Christian teachings and can boldly integrate the scriptures and the teachings of their church leaders into the very fabric of the entire curriculum.

Dr. Dobson was against prayer in school for the same reason, anyone could then pray according to their religion.
However, we have this mistaken idea that as long as there is no Christian teaching then there is no religious teaching. What has happened is that we replaced teaching that was based on a Christian world view with teaching from a worldview that is based on the religion of secular humanism.

You "get it"! Godless is not religious neutral in content or consequences. Neither is God-centered. Few conservatives understand this. The problem with the government's NON-neutral schools is that the most politically powerful get to indoctrinate the next generation of voters.

Yes, indeed! The solution is to begin the process of privatizing K-12 schooling. Vouchers, tax credits, charters, homeschool, Internet schooling, etc. can help build the infrastructure but the goal must be kept in sight. Goal: Complete separation of school and state.
I am. I did not finance the building to be a religious center. I financed it to be a school building. And that is what it is except for an hour or so not even regularly.

Why do I want religious belief there? Because the community wants it there and they are the ones who paid for it.This nonsense that religion cannot be in the public square is alien and contrary to the founding of this country. But we both know that the government would NEVER acquiesce their power and authority to give up control of the indoctrination of the youths. The Führer knew the power of the indoctrination of young minds, and so does our great and benevolent Mother nanny state. And the people love their government for making sure that their children are getting a good education.
Answer: Simply remove the children! There are whole counties and even entire states where, if the God fearing believers and conservatives removed their kids, the entire evil empire of government schooling would implode! Thousands of government school employees would be out in the cold looking for work in the real world of the private sector. No more teachers unions money laundering funds to the communist Democrat Party. It really is that simple.
I am hopeful. The percentage of homeschoolers grows every year and the government reports that they are now at 4% of the school aged population. This is the government's estimation so the real number is likely twice that. The number of children in charters, and using vouchers and tax credits also grows every year.
Large intractable evil institutions can lose their legitimacy seemingly overnight. Some examples are the Protestant Reformation, slavery, the American Revolution, and Jim Crow. Government schooling isn't special.

Chess is an legitimate academic pursuit. Worship (or the degradation of worship in the case of the atheist club) is not. The purpose of the school is to educate, not to indoctrinate.
