Abbott directs Texas State Guard to monitor Jade Helm 15 exercises
Austin American-Statesman ^ | April 28, 2015 | News Staff

In the wake of intense vocal opposition to a series of military exercises planned for this summer in Texas, Gov. Greg Abbott has instructed the Texas State Guard to monitor the operation dubbed Jade Helm 15.

Abbott sent a letter Tuesday to Maj. Gen. Gerald “Jake” Betty, commander of the Texas State Guard, directing him to provide regular updates to the governor to ensure that residents’ “safety, constitutional rights, private property rights and civil liberties will not be infringed” during the eight weeks of training from July to September.

U.S. military officials have described the Jade Helm 15 operations as a long-planned military exercise occurring throughout the Southwest — including parts of Bastrop County — that will include special forces units from multiple armed services, such as Army Green Berets and Navy SEALs. The training will take place in locations across Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, California, Nevada, Utah and Colorado.

In his letter, Abbott notes that the U.S. Special Operations Command, which is running the exercise, “has assured Texas that each location selected for the training exercises will pose no risk to residents or property and that they will coordinate with local residents via verbal and written communication.”

He is shaping up to be a very fine governor. Better than Perry and Bush.

Perhaps.

But I bet this got round-filed as soon as he finished reading it.

The TX State Guard has no federal affiliation and answers directly to the governor at all times. I doubt it was round-filed.

As to the governor sending the letter, he may be the only governor in the entire US that understands his place in the pecking order and it’s not behind the feds.

Bring back this guy from the 1980s.

“One Texas State Guard battalion led by Robert Holloway, a former Vietnam Green Beret who had served as a mercenary for the white supremacist regime in Rhodesia, was disbanded for being too “gung_ho”_abandoning the standard green uniform for camouflage fatigues and engaging in search_and_destroy training, outside the group’s formal regulations. Ironically, the unit’s activities came to light after it was praised in an article in Soldier of Fortune magazine.”

You are right, and my mistake.

I was thinking the letter went to the US Army brass, the people running Jade Helm.

Bravo, Gov. Abbott! Why is the U.S. Military training for urban warfare in Bastrop, Texas, a town of 7,000 people? Why was it chosen? Is it because it is also 80% White and votes conservative?

The community meeting called by the mayor on Monday showed the deep distrust of the residents of Bastrop. The military brass basically told the people they couldn’t do a thing about Operation Jade Helm, during which the military will roam the private land of residents without permission for three months.

It seems more appropriate for urban warfare training to take place in Baltimore, beginning tomorrow. The rural areas of this country just want D.C. to leave them alone.

We’re pretty proud of the guy. Far more conservative than Rick Perry.

Although Perry did a lot of good in the state.

'Why was it chosen? Is it because it is also 80% White and votes conservative?'

Yes, that is exactly why. The same applies to other areas, where 'locals' and such help the military train. It happens all the time around the US, the most famous case being Robin Sage which is carried out in Central North Carolina several times a year.

The Queen's Army of Rhodesia was NOT a "white supremacist regime", it was the recognized military of Rhodesia.

That would mean Mr. Holloway was not a mercenary, he was an enlisted trooper.

BTW, it was an integrated military organization.

Like these guys...

And these guys...

We love our Governor. Much better than his predecessor, Gov Goodhair. Rick would’ve thought about it a few more days, then threatened to send such a letter.

At least Abbott acts!

The article had said regime, not the military.

I had friends who served in Rhodesia, and served under a Lieutenant that had served there, although I don’t know how he got his clearance, since mercenary work was illegal.

There were quite a few Americans serving in Rhodesia and South Africa, and other parts of Africa, and of course Latin America.

The late 1970s and the 1980s were big years for that stuff.
