It’s very likely that Scott Holder of Santa Rosa would have been among the 17 people killed in Nepal after an earthquake unleashed an avalanche on Mount Everest.
But he had a massive cold.
ow to Help Victims of the Nepal Earthquake And instead of climbing up the Earth’s highest mountain, the 49-year-old financial adviser and mountaineer had headed back to below camp before big catastrophe on Saturday.
“At the end of the day, God gave me a cold for a reason,” Holder, 49, told NBC Bay Area by phone from the capital city of Kathmandu near Mount Everest.
And he described what it was like to feel a 42-second earthquake from down below the mountain. “It was traumatic,” he said. “No one knows how to act in an earthquake, but the locals were panicked. It was pandemonium.”
At least 17 climbers and guides died on the mountain from the avalanches triggered by a magnitude-7.8 earthquake northwest of Nepal’s capital. On Monday, the death toll for the country had risen to about 4,000, and four American were confirmed dead, all of them in the area of Mount Everest.
One of those Americans was Google X executive Dan Fredinburg, who was on the Google Adventure Team, which mapped exotic locations for the Silicon Valley company.
Through coughs and sniffles, Holder said that his immediate plans are to gather some like-minded souls and help the Red Cross in Nepal on Tuesday. Then, sometime later this week, he wants to hop on a plane and head back to the Bay Area to see his wife of 24 years and his two daughters, 17 and 19.
“I just want to hug my wife and hug my kids,” he said.
I am more concerned about the many commoners that died.
True, that, although you'd be surprised how high the snow line is in Nepal. They are much closer to the Equator.

No. I find it silly that people think god singled them out for saving amongst gross carnage including undoubtedly hundreds of children. It’s on the same level as pro athletes thanking god for their home run or Super Bowl victory, etc.
Whenever I narrowly avoid a car accident.....or an injury.....or any misfortune......

The Bible does say - “it is appointed unto man once to die, and after that - the judgment.” So, yes, there is an appointed time for each person’s death. Apparently, it wasn’t this man’s time to go.

God is the only one who determines who lives and who dies and when. As to his reasons for doing so with different individuals, he just doesn’t give us his reasons.
We can be thankful to God for keeping us safe for another day of life, like God did with this guy, and for others who are saved, but now gone, they are doing very well in Christ right now.
The very unfortunate ones are those who were unsaved and then died. Their fate is sealed.
That’s a good reason for all to accept the Salvation that God has provided through his Son, Jesus, the Messiah of Israel — and to do so NOW!
Christians don’t get their teachings about God from a movie ... LOL ...
The Bible is the source of authority for teaching and doctrine, as it is infallible and inerrant, and lasts forever.
God numbers the days of everyone. Their days were up at that time.

The thing about that is that God does number every person’s days, but the Bible doesn’t say a thing about a Super Bowl game ... LOL ... One is what God does, while the other is a bit more speculative.
He is doing something about it ... it’s called the plan of Salvation. Have you availed yourself of that plan that God has provided for you?

It’s common to those who are about to die and are unsaved! The saved are not that way as they know that to be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord!
