NEW DELHI: Indian Air Force has initiated a proposal to purchase three more Boeing C-17 Globemaster III aircraft from the US for about Rs 8,700 crore, impressed as it is by the cargo carrier's varied utility that includes carrying out of large-scale humanitarian assistance operations such as the ongoing relief effort in earthquake-hit Nepal.
The IAF has told the government that it wants to add three very heavy transport aircraft to its fleet of 10 C-17s that were ordered in 2011 and inducted in 2013, officials said.
The IAF has pressed the case for three more C-17s after being informed that only five of the heavy lift aircraft are left for sale as the US defence and aerospace firm has closed down the production line, officials said.

Even the Indians are hip to the slogan: ‘If it’s not Boeing, we’re not going’.
Prayers to the people of Nepal.
The IAF needs to buy several B-52s while they are at it!
Too bad they have shut down the assembly line, I’m sure that a heavy lift, high volume aircraft is in demand by all our allies.
They have shut down the assembly line because they have run out of enough orders to keep it running.
If the demand was there then why weren't the orders for aircraft?
Have the Clintons arrived in Nepal yet to swindle the Nepalese people?
Probably because the SoS has to approve of the sale.
So what order has the administration blocked?
Sorry, but I am not privy to that info. I do know that the SoS has blocked arms sales to Taiwan for years.
Boeing’s final run apparently includes a number of unsold C-17s, so there are a few new ones available. Boeing intends to support them for many years.
They seem to be expensive for what they are. Anyone know what they compete against?
Gonna be a sad day when the -130s come up short on load and range and the last C5 falls out of the sky.
Good for India that they were first to figure out that it may be time to stock up...I think this buy would make them the second biggest user of the plane after USAF).
The Indians have been on the ball, and above the curve, on this earthquake effort, and it surprising even the Indians themselves.
Since the Prime Minister said “go”, they were on the scene within hours with the first Med teams and relief supplies.
A sign that perhaps the modern Indian Military isn’t as moribund as it’s past has suggested.
“Have the Clintons arrived in Nepal yet to swindle the Nepalese people?”
I’m sure Bill and Hilary have thought of that. They are probably waiting a couple of days in case there are any aftershocks. Very soon they will be on the way to help (themselves).
Anna Chen from our church is there probably on the front lines. setting up tents for housing. arrived tuesday for a mission visit to distribute clothes.
