Ted Cruz Joked About Hymens While On The College Debate Circuit

The New York Times dug up some priceless anecdotes from Sen. Ted Cruz's (R-TX) college debating career in a story published Tuesday, from a poorly received joke about regenerating hymen to his affinity for the "Les Misérables" soundtrack.

The newspaper spoke with several of Cruz's rival debaters who said that the presidential candidate was a powerful speaker that could be undercut by humor. He would "unravel" when competitors deployed humor against him, according to former Yale debater Austan Goolsbee (an economist who later served on President Obama's cabinet).

Cruz also fared poorly when he made jokes himself. From the Times report:

Mr. Cruz’s own attempts at humor sometimes missed the mark. In one debate, he proposed a method to detect infidelity, in which God should “give women a hymen that grows back every time she has intercourse with a different guy, because that will be a ‘visible sign’ of the breach of trust,” according to a recollection by David Kennedy published in a Harvard debate team reunion booklet in 2001.

Mr. Kennedy’s debate partner mocked Mr. Cruz’s knowledge of the subject matter by contorting herself to see how the anatomy in question could be “visible,” according to the booklet.

In another debate against Amherst College, the opposing team argued that Ricky Ricardo of "I Love Lucy" fame should have let Lucille Ball's character work. Cruz responded “Well, guess what, I’m Cuban! And no self-respecting Cuban man of the era would let his wife work," according to the Times.

My immediate reaction also — just blows me away how fast and how deep the “research” goes when it’s a Republican, but not a whit about Obama. Actually a little surprised about all the print from the NYT about Hillary’s foibles (email and now the money trail from the Foundation).

"Jason Horowitz (D-NYT)"

That's a nice rouch - I'll have to use it some time.

Dang, it took the THIS long to come up with some manner of “dirt” on Cruz? That has to be a good sign!

There’s nothing like Republicans announcing their candidacies for the presidency to awaken the investigative media from their seven-year slumber. They’re all yawning, stretching, scratching themselves, and coming out of their caves.

"How the press has fallen in the U.S. — and it puts us in terrible jeopardy of tyranny."

Yes, and yes.

“Did they ever do an in-depth report on Obama’s college life?”

To inquire would be racism, just like questioning Hillary’s crooked deals is sexism. Also, about the only thing they can find on Obama are pictures of him smoking dope. They probably are censoring the ones of him on a prayer rug.

If lefties want “accountable government”, they’ll have to elect republicans.

Otherwise, the media just isn’t interested.

I’m sure you read John Drew’s essay “Meet Young Obama.” Press curiosity? Zero.

I just read the article you linked to. It seems Obama changed his strategy and not his goals or beliefs.

Really, with that remarkable resemblance to Bill Murray, he didn’t clone some of his comedy talent as well?

Nope, so if you're looking for a candidate for Chief Buffoon, Ted Cruz probably isn't your man.

And where’s the guy’s teleprompter!?

We all know you can’t give a really good speech without a teleprompter!
That’s what shows how smart you are: ability to read a teleprompter well.

Sounds like something he said to rattle a female debate opponent, and the resentment has been smoldering in her belly for decades.

I used to do the same sort of thing in grade school forensics (and the nuns absolutely HATED me for it.)

But we can’t find a single professor who remember Obama. We can’t find anything he published at Harvard. We can’t find his grades from Occidental (or where ever it was he went), or Harvard. Have we ever seen his marriage certificate?

Geez - this is nuts.
