Keep Wisconsin's 48-hour waiting period for handgun buys (barf alert)

The National Rifle Association will not rest until every American is fully armed — all supposedly in the name of Second Amendment rights. And now Wisconsin Republicans stand ready to help the NRA in its mission by repealing a reasonable law that requires a two-day wait before a handgun can be purchased.

Repealing the law is a terrible idea.

But the state Senate passed a bill that would do that on Tuesday, and the bill appears likely to pass the Assembly and be signed into law by Gov. Scott Walker, who campaigned at the NRA's national convention earlier this month. At the Conservative Political Action Conference in February, Walker said he wanted to make Wisconsin a national leader when it comes to eliminating the waiting period.

But Wisconsin's 48-hour waiting period provides a "cooling off" that likely saves lives. And it's hardly too much to ask someone who is purchasing a handgun to hold off for two days; that's a very modest imposition. There is no state waiting period for rifles and shotguns used in hunting.

Conservatives argue that because background checks can often be performed in a matter of hours, that a handgun should be sold as soon as the process is done. "It's a penalty to me to have to wait," co-sponsor and state Rep. Mary Czaja (R-Irma) said last month at a public hearing on the bill, citing women in abusive relationships who want to buy a gun quickly for protection.

But as Czaja surely must know, there are better ways to protect battered women than by arming them — especially if they aren't well-trained in the use of a handgun.

I cant think of one time where I went into a rage and didn’t act on it right then and there. Never thought of going to a store to get a better weapon. They wee my young days and nothing more than fist fights, maybe with a few beer bottles and stools thrown in.
Someone wanting to go to a gun store and get it for the purpose of killing is not usually in a heated rage and they wont mind waiting the two days.

In a matter of seconds if the NICS system is running properly...

The waiting period is part of the liberal war on women. The vast majority of men will win an unarmed battle agaisnt the vast majority of women - thuggish ex-bf v. smaller ex-gf almost always turns out badly. The only way a woman can win in most cases is if she is armed. Thanks to liberals, a woman has to wait 48 hours to defend herself once she realizes it is a life and death situation. I’d rather see women with the option to defend themselves immediately against such threats.

Will blacks be required to wait 48-hours before killing people with their newly-stolen pistols?

Background checks convert a God given right into a government granted privilege.

They think people are really, really, stupid. No waiting period for rifles and shotguns, but a person who really wants to murder someone will insist on doing it with a handgun...

Then, more stupid. If you already own a gun, you still have to wait. A California judge just ruled that to be too stupid to be Constitutional.

I wonder how they would react to a 2-day waiting period for them to be able to print articles (without any edits during the 48 hours)?

Some great comments in the article discussion :
"How in the world does this relate to Archie Brown being shot?
... because the Journal Sentinal doesnt care that he was shot with an illegally obtained firearm, by a CONVICTED FELON who was barred from POSSESSING ANY dangerous weapons Especially Firearms, but why let the facts get in the way to pandering to the rhetoric and lies?"

How many over 21 year olds who do not belong to a prohibited class commit crimes with legally purchased handguns?

In the case of 15 year old gangsters, isn't the waiting period for legally purchasing a handgun between 6 years and "never" right now, and wouldn't that stay exactly the same?
