Ted Cruz: I ‘misspoke’ to voters about military gun issue (Juan McCain throws a tantrum)

Sen. Ted Cruz now claims he “misspoke” when he told potential New Hampshire voters that he has been “pressing” Sen. John McCain to hold hearings on whether service members can carry concealed weapons on military bases.

“Now, I will acknowledge, I may have misspoken in New Hampshire when I said that I had been pressing John McCain, and what I had been pressing was the Armed Services Committee,” Cruz said in an interview Tuesday on Fox News.

“John McCain is the new chairman of it, so I sent a letter to the previous chairman,” Cruz said.

On Sunday, Cruz told a gathering in Litchfield, New Hampshire, that he had spoken with McCain on the issue of “denying our soldiers the ability to exercise their Second Amendment rights.”

When asked, McCain said the comments came as a “complete surprise” and suggested that he may have communicated his mission through “some medium I’m not familiar with.”

“Maybe it was through, you know, hand telegraph. Maybe it was sign language,” McCain said.

During his interview Tuesday, Cruz called McCain’s response “voluble” and said the Arizona senator “can always be counted on for a good quote.” Cruz, who is running for the 2016 Republican presidential nomination, said he has raised the issue repeatedly in open hearings where he believes McCain was present.

“I had not communicated [these policies] to John directly, although I had at a hearing and will continue to raise it with John McCain because the committee ought to look at and listen to the military’s arguments,” Cruz said.

“I’m a big believer in defending Second Amendment rights of everyone including our soldiers,” he continued.

After the interview, McCain took to Twitter to offer a short note.

“Ted Cruz is a friend and valued member of the Senate Armed Services Committee,” McCain said.

He’s already passed that attitude to his lovely daughter so his work is done.

If you think we’re in the end times and believe it, then voting surely does not matter.

You like him. He is a hot head just like Obama. My wife said he will be crying just like Obama if he doesn’t have his way.

The real issue with Ted Cruz is the fact that as a man of principle he makes other people who are less-principled really nervous.

Time to bring out my old tagline.

I know him. You can hang onto your country-clubbers but they will never be able to hold a candle to someone who knows the Constitution and is willing to protect it with his life.

As opposed to members of the GOPe who, like Obama, prefers to use the Constitution as roll of toilet paper.

Both Dole and McCain had their chance and no one wanted what they had to offer.

Trivial mistake by Cruz. Let’s look at McCain’s HUGE mistakes: gang of 8 on court appointments, campaign finance leftism, Arab Spring foreign policy flops, global warming junk science believer, and on and on.

“Yes, the Republican party has to get back to right of center, but; it has to be done from within.”

I’m from “within” and have been for 50 plus years, I recognize Senator Cruz as being from “within”. “Withins” have been contributing, knocking on doors, making phone calls and giving support to the Republican party since before I could vote. The problem appears to be that the game has changed from being a competition to an exhibition with our “team”, the Republicans, becoming the Washington Generals to the democrats Harlem Globe trotters. The Conservatives I know are tired of being the “withins” and want a real team with the goal of winning. This means we need real Republicans like Senator Cruz instead of backdoor democrats like John McCain.

McCain could not be acting more like a douchebag.

McCain is an egotistical PITA who should have had the decency to retire after the end of his last term. However, I don't see what you guys are talking about. I've looked at McCain's quotes and what I see is the leftist media trying to stir things up by making up things. And you fell into the trap.

The article in this thread bears this out: John McCain's Fake Fight With Ted Cruz Over Guns on Military Bases (Bloomberg News Defends Cruz!)

This looks like another case of "I'll believe anything said about [insert name of person you don't like] as long as it's bad."

Glad Ted and John cleared that up.

I'm not feeling all warm and fuzzy about this.

“Maybe it was through, you know, hand telegraph. Maybe it was sign language,” McCain said.

That's between quotation marks, and douchy.

Ted's original remarks, OTOH, were misrepresented, as Bloomberg reported.

How do you know McCain was attacking Cruz? It sounds like an innocuous remark to me.

“Bless her/his heart” is bandied about quite a bit!

I have to admit, I stole it from Mark Levin 8-)

It works well in certain situations.

Maybe I’m giving McCain too much credit, but I don’t think he aimed that remark at Cruz. I think it was just an attempt at humor.

Plays well with others:

• In the landmark case of District of Columbia v. Heller, Cruz assembled a coalition of 31 states in defense of the principle that the 2nd Amendment guarantees an individual right to keep and bear arms.

• Cruz presented oral argument for the amici states in the companion case to Heller before the United States Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit.

Has a long history as a Republican:

• Domestic Policy Advisor to U.S. President George W. Bush on the 2000 Bush-Cheney campaign.

• On November 14, 2012, Cruz was appointed vice-chairman of the National Republican Senatorial Committee.

I have turned down his reelection cry for funds three times this month. First he wasn’t decided, then his wife tried, then he did. I think he should retire if the seat will stay Rep.

Do you have a suggestion as to who may be a “team” player who can get the Republican party back on track?

Perhaps John Kasich. I recall he was highly respected and left somewhat frustrated.
