Senators Need Not Apply
Slate ^ | April 20, 2015 | John Dickerson

......Each candidate [Walker, Perry, Bush, Christie], sometimes in nearly identical language, told the audience of activists gathered in Nashua this weekend that they should be considered for the presidency because they didn’t just talk about conservative ideas, they had put them into practice as governors.

Perry made the case most powerfully:

>>>The next president of the United States really needs to be someone who has deep experience as an executive. And I’m talking about things you just can't learn with a book, things you can’t just learn sitting down. Because I’ll give you some examples. They didn’t hand me a manual say, “Here’s how you deal with a space shuttle disintegrating in your state.” They didn't hand me a manual when Katrina came into Louisiana and there were literally hundreds of thousands of people that were displaced. They didn't hand me a manual when all those people showed up on our borders last year. Or for that matter when Ebola ended up on the shores of America in Dallas, Texas ... we need to have this conversation and talk about it in a civil and a thoughtful way, that that executive experience is incredibly important for the next leader of this country. Because we’ve spent eight years with a young, inexperienced United States senator. And I will suggest to you economically, militarily, foreign-policy wise, we paid a tremendous price.<<<

The idea connected with the audience. On Saturday morning, pollster Frank Luntz held a focus group with about 150 Republican activists. He asked the room whether they’d like to see a senator as president, and about five people raised their hands. He asked the same question about selecting a governor, and everyone in the room seemed to raise their hand. “Wow,” said Luntz....

For discussion.

I'd like to know how you feel about the importance of on the job executive experience.

Rick Perry stated it very well.

I prefer the candidate has executive experience. It still boggles my mind that a completely inexperienced guy like Barack Obama can be elected president. His resume consisted of getting elected. Accomplishing anything of note while elected? Eh, not so much.

Some of the best and some of the worst Presidents were Governors before.

Being a Governor first does not guarantee quality or capability.

the important difference is not governors vs. legislators... its a LEADER (Ted Cruz) vs politicians.

False argument. No one on the right is saying Hillary is not qualified for never being a governor. Bambi seems just fine at carrying out his agenda which is the problem - agenda. I like Perry and Walker. Not ready to write off Cruz or Rubio.

Chris Christie has executive experience and his state has been downgraded, NJ taxes are up and govt is bloated.

Rick Perry...didn’t he give in state tuition to illegal immigrants while military veterans from out of state had to pay the out of state tuition rates...

So.

Executive experience for a squishy GOP is a negative as it shows they are willing to surrender to Democrats which is not the kind of Republican needed at this time or ever

Hah, I think that's the least of the concerns over Hillary's proven record
to be the worst possible candidate in American history. But hey, at least
she's good at being the worst. Maybe she can run on that.

I believe that executive on the job experience is highly important. I know from owning/managing 3 small companies.

That's why I'm leaning towards Walker. As much as I prefer Cruz and his positions, Walker has a history of turning his State around. He not only whethered 3 elections (2 recalls if I'm correct), but fought and won against the power-hunger unions. That takes guts, political acuteness, political fortitude, and relentless strength. He has turned the failing State of Wisconsin into a model of success.

Still, Ted Cruz is our next Ronald Reagan with a little seasoning. For now, put Walker in our Oval Office and maybe Cruz as VP. Think about all they could do in all those years to re-instate America's greatness and promote our values once again to world, not to mention the fear of god into those who attack us and allys.

Neither will BOW to a foreign potentate nor apologize for America being the exceptional nation it is when so many other nations have emulated our system.

I’ll say Hillary is unqualified to be president. Her resume? Former first lady, carpetbagging senator, and US Secretary of State during one of the worst foreign policy periods in modern US history. Yeah. She’s unqualified.

Of course, qualifications for president are literally:

US Constitution, Article II, Section 1
No person except a natural born citizen, or a citizen of the United States, at the time of the adoption of this Constitution, shall be eligible to the office of President; neither shall any person be eligible to that office who shall not have attained to the age of thirty-five years, and been fourteen years a resident within the United States.

US Constitution, Amendment XXII, Section 1
No person shall be elected to the office of the President more than twice, and no person who has held the office of President, or acted as President, for more than two years of a term to which some other person was elected President shall be elected to the office of the President more than once.

In fairness this was the Texas state legislature [w/ only 4 opposing].

On that same topic:

June 27, 2011: Walker Revokes In-state Tuition For Undocumented Students Attending Univ And Colleges In Wisconsin "- On Sunday, Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker (R) signed his two-year 2011-2013 budget, which included ending in-state tuition for undocumented students attending public universities and colleges. LISTEN! This from March 1st, 2015

10:20 in this video

Scott is asked if illegal pay a fine, if they can stay.

Listen to his garbled answer yourself. He says he believes a way can be found to do that.

I have been highly suspicious of the claim he changed his mind. I’m glad I was.

Not important at all compared to knowing the constitution and restoring national constitutional integrity.

Sounds like that to me, too. That needs a clarification.

March 1, 2015: Fox News: Chris Wallace interviews Scott Walker:

".....WALKER: And my view has changed. I'm flat out saying it. I'm -- candidates can say that. Sometimes they don't. I'm saying my --

WALLACE: So, you've changed from 2013?

WALKER: Absolutely. I look at the problems we've experienced for the last few years. I've talked to governors on the border and others out there. I've talked to people all across America.

And the concerns I have is that we need to secure the border. We ultimately need to put in place a system that works. A legal immigration system that works.

And part of doing this is put the onus on employers, getting them E-Verify and tools to do that. But I don't think you do it through amnesty.".....

March 26, 2015:“We strongly dispute this account. Governor Walker has been very clear that he does not support amnesty and believes that border security must be established and the rule of law must be followed. His position has not changed, he does not support citizenship for illegal immigrants, and this story line is false,” she announced in an email to journalists Thursday afternoon.”

“I made it clear that for me, if somebody wants to be a citizen, they need to go back to their country of origin, get in line, no preferential treatment,” Walker said. “In terms of what to do beyond that, again, that’s something we got to work with Congress on.”

Why do you think Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker pushed to repeal instate tuition for illegals in his first budget and signed that repeal into law [Info in Post #11]?

No other state that has approved it has repealed it.

Walker did.

Would we be better off with President Perry today? Undoubtedly! Was Perry better than the 2012 GOP nominee? Certainly.
