DA says Apple, Google software helps terrorists

Manhattan DA Cyrus Vance Jr. sounded a battle cry Sunday, calling on law-enforcement agencies to battle Apple and Google over software that makes it impossible for authorities to “decrypt” cellphones seized in criminal investigations.

The recently rolled-out “upgrades” haven’t attracted much general attention, which means police must start pressing elected officials to roll back the terrorist-friendly software, he said.

“Apple has created a phone that is dark, that cannot be accessed by law enforcement even when a court has authorized us to look at its contents,” Vance warned on “The Cats Roundtable” show on WNYM/970 AM.

“That’s going to be the terrorists’ communication device of choice.” Google is also introducing software for its Android phones that police and prosecutors will be unable to trace.

Combined, the tech giants make up about 96 percent of the world cellphone market.

No way the government should be allowed any access! The government is ALREADY too much into all our business and they still want more! It keeps getting more and more invasive all the time. Soon it will get to the point where there will be no walls, at all, even the tiniest little bit ... with government not even required to get any permission or required to go through any legal procedures.

I'm glad Apple has made it so that Apple, itself, can't even get the encrypted information, much less the authorities!

The government wants Apple and Google to “give it up” and make it so they can get the data from Apple and Google customers! It sounds like the government is going to try and bulldoze this through!

What can I say. I hate Google for not even putting Easter eggs on its page for Easter, but they had a link to a mosque on Ramadan, and a gay rights picture, and MLK which is fine, but not probably its largest customer base.
and since that fruit at apple went all hypocritical on Indiana I don’t like him. And it doesn’t matter because I’m a nobody lol

at least Bill had hundreds of Easter eggs from some European country on bing, its better than nothing. And yes I know the eggs were to throw a bone to pagans so they would celebrate Easter, but its the point

It doesn’t matter whether one hates or loves these companies ... they should hold the line.

For Apple ... they have made this to be a fundamental part of their business model and sales strategy ... so they’re much more likely to “hold the line” than Google is!

I guess that makes it impossible for authorities to plant false information to ensnare innocent people. That's what it's about. Too many laws, too many corrupt lawkeepers, too little observance of our Constitution.

I wonder what percentage of identity theft is attributable to security flaws mandated by govt. I bet it is upwards of 80%.

Any maker of any tool is thus enabling terrorists. PUHLEAZ! Whether it be guns, the ammunition to run them, aircraft, toyota pickup trucks, whatever; they’re tools. It’s evil that is bad, not tools. A hammer can build a house, and it can tear one down.

"Terrorist-Friendly" software.

What a phrase.

I will support Apple, Google, and anybody else who stands up to the government over-reach.

Sure wish Microsoft was more vocal and adamant about privacy, but I don't think they can be. Their gonads are pretty much owned by the spooks already, sad to say -- look what happened to Skype both before and after they bought it.

The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated, and no Warrants shall issue, but upon probable cause, supported by Oath or affirmation, and particularly describing the place to be searched, and the persons or things to be seized.

The fact that mathematics makes things hard to decrypt sometimes is a hard fact of life.

So the US federal government can eat mathematical dirt. And if the country is really at war with terrorists, then kill them wherever they are, tap their phones pursuant to court order, etc.

We should be launching air strikes, and anything else we feel is necessary, anywhere there is any group of terrorists large enough to play a game of pickup basketball...

I use Bing. They always have great photo pages, including all the holidays, and they offer points for searches. I use my points to get Amazon gift cards for myself.
