Video may have killed the radio star, but in Norway it's digital that's killing FM radio for good.

In two years' time, the Scandinavian nation is slated to become the first in the world to phase out radio entirely.

Any bets that Norway has so heavily regulated radio that practically no one wants to operate a radio station?

It’s a country of barely five million (slightly less than Alabama). For musical preferences, it’s basically old style pop or new style pop, and a little heavy metal. Talk radio that does exist is mostly NPR-lite and there simply isn’t a lot of Christian debate going on.

If you notice the trend....it’s not just Norway but the bulk of Europe that is slowly dropping FM for digital....better quality sound/reception, which no one argues about. I expect most US FM stations to retire by 2030 as we flip to mostly a digital format as well.

I don’t listen to AM or FM here in the USA either. But I do listen to a number of Podcasts ... :-) ...

That will be a sad time. However, I currently listen to most FM stations digitally, via my iPad or computer. It's only in my car that I use FM. Digitally, listening to FM via computer allows you to choose from thousands of stations around the world. When I'm in the mood, I'll listen to stations in New Orleans, or Hawaii, or other countries; makes me feel like I'm there without the expense of traveling. Just too few stations locally on regular FM radio.

Officials say the move will spurn innovation because the cost of digital transmission will save some $25 million dollars.

"Spurn" innovation? Did the writer mean "spur"?

What carmaker will develop special radios just for the Norwegian market?

There’s no guarantee that this will give better sound quality...

The real story is that Norway is dropping analog FM broadcasting in favor of the European digital radio broadcasting standard DAB. Cars already come equipped with DAB receivers, and Norway already simulcasts in DAB and FM.

The US equivalent is called HD Radio, and is simulcast along with may AM and FM stations, but our cars don’t have HD Radio receivers yet. You have to buy a separate receiver.

The Republican Party was founded to fight those twin relics of barbarism, slavery and polygamy. AM and FM are relics of the earliest days of radio. If you find a 1930’s vintage AM receiver that works, it still receives your local AM stations fine. I’m surprised we ever got around to dumping analog TV.

It may have escaped the noticed of some, but there has been some progress in electronics in the past 60 years. Time to move on.

Carmakers will come up music players which will play your podcasts instead on FM radio stations on the go.

I’m a music listener. But there hasn’t been any music made since the 70s that I care for, I have most of my favorite music on iTunes, on my iPhone and IPod and in my car via flash drive. I listen to Rush on the radio in the car on occasion and radio on line when home. I have no actual radios at home any more.

I’ve been and lived in that country a few times and FM doe snot make much sense once you go further north than Bergan.

Hardly anyone there and the mountains stop the signal.
