Scott Walker backs pathway to citizenship at private dinner

p class="zn-body__paragraph">Washington (CNN)Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker endorsed a pathway to citizenship for undocumented immigrants during a private dinner with Republican leaders in New Hampshire two weeks ago, backing away from the more hard-line position he has staked out in public and obscuring where he stands on the hot-button issue.

At a March 13 dinner at the Copper Door Restaurant in Bedford organized by New Hampshire GOP Chairwoman Jennifer Horn, Walker, a likely candidate for the Republican presidential nomination in 2016, was asked how he would address the problem of roughly 11 million undocumented immigrants currently living in the United States.

After he declared that securing the United States border with Mexico is "our first priority," Walker said that undocumented immigrants now residing in the country could "secure their citizenship" as long as they "get in the back of line" and wait like anyone else applying for citizenship.

The comments, first reported by the Wall Street Journal, were relayed to CNN by a Republican briefed on the dinner who did not want to be identified.

During a question-and-answer session, Walker said that undocumented immigrants currently living in the United States should not be deported, the Republican source said.

Though Walker once supported a path to citizenship as part of comprehensive immigration overhaul, his New Hampshire comments are at odds with more recent assurances that he opposes what he calls "amnesty" for undocumented immigrants. Walker admitted in a Fox News interview earlier this month that he changed his position on the issue.

The newly-reported comments are also in conflict with the sentiments of many conservatives who hold sway in Republican primaries and

There's a clause in the Constitution that says, "The path to U.S. citizenship is: Sneak into the United States, live here illegally for years abusing the legal system of the United States and make no attempt to assimilate."

Nobody (except you) said that. There has always been a Constitutional way to earn citizenship -- ever since our founding. You look it up. The rules have varied, depending upon our needs. But, there have always been rules and the government has always enforced them -- until Obama.

The deal breaker is that he’s lost his core. He has an incredibly admirable record in Wisconsin, but now for President, he’s floundering. In reply to same-sex marriage, he says ‘ I went to the reception, but not the wedding’. This is Clintonian— ‘I didn’t inhale’.

You can’t hope to win, if you play not to lose. Just tell the truth- people respect conviction.

Actually, there are several fine conservatives in the race. It will be interesting to see how they do with actual voters except the primaries are all rigged for a rino that can get 17% of the vote while 87% hate his guts. It is called “winner Take All” until we fix it, we get screwed.

I’d vote for Jindal for POTUS over Walker if had to...but I think CRUZ will win the nomination and Jindal would be a good VP.

There are 2 issues here. The most basic consequence of illegal immigration should be the permanent forfeiture of any possibility for citizenship. This is fundamental if you want to fair to the hundreds of millions who want to migrate legally.

Has anyone who is running for president proposed to deport all illegals? I haven’t heard yet.

That is what most of them are saying. If Jesus was running, some FReepers would find something wrong with him.

I would propose cutting off jobs and all benefits and jail-deport on contact with the criminal justice system. Plus a REAL border wall.

I don’t think we reward people with citizenship who broke our law to come here. They should go home and pursue a legal path.

Read the article. That is exactly what Walker said. “Get to the end of the line...”

That’s right, and so far Hillary hasn’t come up with someone. There’s still hope.

You're funny. Your statement implied that what Scott proposes is in the Constitution. He's talking about illegal who invaded our country and your claiming there is a provision in the Constitution that covers that? Show me.

I stand by my post. Show me where, in the Constitution, it says: The path to U.S. citizenship is: Sneak into the United States, live here illegally for years abusing the legal system of the United States and make no attempt to assimilate."

That’s about as wrong as you can get this year.

We have five or six people now, and it looks like more might jump in.

As they bleed the Conservative vote, Jeb gets the lame brain moderate to leftist vote in our party, and the Democrats chime in.

This is exactly how we got Dole, Bush, McCain, and Romney.

WE MUST decide on one man ASAP, if that one man is to be well funded enough to compete next year.

" If Jesus was running, some FReepers would find something wrong with him."

I'm sick of hearing crap like this.

Is there something wrong with wanting a candidate who doesn't suck up to illegals and queers? Who doesn't adopt the agenda of the left and help them destroy the country?

Let me enlighten you: THERE ISN'T.

Can you or better yet Walker explain how you get to the back of a line that starts outside our nation, if he won’t agree to send them home?

That’s just pacification rhetoric, and sadly you’re proof it works. You now better if you think about it.
