Scott Walker endorsed a pathway to citizenship for undocumented immigrants during a private dinner with Republican leaders in New Hampshire two weeks ago, backing away from the more hard-line position he has staked out in public and obscuring where he stands on the hot-button issue.
At a March 13 dinner at the Copper Door Restaurant in Bedford organized by New Hampshire GOP Chairwoman Jennifer Horn, Walker, a likely candidate for the Republican presidential nomination in 2016, was asked how he would address the problem of roughly 11 million undocumented immigrants currently living in the United States.
After he declared that securing the United States border with Mexico is "our first priority," Walker said that undocumented immigrants now residing in the country could "secure their citizenship" as long as they "get in the back of line" and wait like anyone else applying for citizenship.

The comments, first reported by the Wall Street Journal, were relayed to CNN by a Republican briefed on the dinner who did not want to be identified.
During a question-and-answer session, Walker said that undocumented immigrants currently living in the United States should not be deported, the Republican source said.
Though Walker once supported a path to citizenship as part of comprehensive immigration overhaul, his New Hampshire comments are at odds with more recent assurances that he opposes what he calls "amnesty" for undocumented immigrants. Walker admitted in a Fox News interview earlier this month that he changed his position on the issue.

Really? There's a clause in the Constitution that says, "The path to U.S. citizenship is: Sneak into the United States, live here illegally for years abusing the legal system of the United States and make no attempt to assimilate."

The media dogs Republican candidates with these kinds of ‘gotcha’ questions because they know it puts potential candidates in a bind with the conservative base or their big money backers.
Notice how they seldom dog Hillary or Dems with the same questions.
The problem with the Republicans is that they keep falling for the same ole ‘gotchas’ in every election cycle. Occasionally, they get a new one and they revert to stammering babble. Recall Romney in the 2012 presidential debate after Steffi asked him whether he would support states banning contraceptives.

At a 2002 Mexican Independence Day event in Milwaukee, Wis., Mr. Walker, then the county executive, signed a resolution that praised the economic and civic contributions of undocumented immigrants and called for “a new program similar to the Federal amnesty program enacted by Congress in 1986.”
As long as the plan is - all illegal aliens must leave, get in the legal immigration line and apply - I’m all for it.

I “ was “ holding out that Scott Walker might have to be my 2nd choice if Ted Cruz ( God forbid ) doesn’t get the nod to the GOP nomination.
However, this is a huge deal breaker for Walker.
As good a guy as Scott Walker is, I'm kinda glad these distinctions are being made early.
Especially with regard to this issue. That will leave only one candidate who can carry the standard forward - this will make Cruz's chance that much better.
I just pray he doesn't fold up under media & party pressure.

Then Walker should renounce the report as inaccurate and fully articulate his position.
Actually, this is the same response Michelle Bachmann gave in 2011. Nobody seemed too bothered about it then.
Walker has shown an ability to learn.

Unfortunately, like many of the major debates in Washington, immigration has become a stalemate-where both sides are imprisoned by their own rhetoric or attachment to sacred cows that prevent the possibility of a balanced solution.
Immigration Reform will not occur until Conservative Republicans, like myself, become part of the solution. I am here today to begin that conversation.
Let's start that conversation by acknowledging we aren't going to deport 12 million illegal immigrants.

This is where prudence, compassion and thrift all point us toward the same goal: bringing these workers out of the shadows and into being taxpaying members of society.
Imagine 12 million people who are already here coming out of the shadows to become new taxpayers.12 million more people assimilating into society. 12 million more people being productive contributors.
