Breitbart ^ | 2015-04-17 | Daniel Nussbaum

Ben Affleck asked the producers of PBS’ Finding Your Roots television show to edit out details of an ancestor who owned slaves, according to a Sony internal email exchange leaked this week.

In an email sent to Sony CEO Michael Lynton shortly before the show’s second season premiere, Harvard professor and Finding Your Roots host Henry Louis Gates Jr. wrote that an unnamed “megastar” had asked producers to “edit out something about one of his ancestors – the fact that he owned slaves.”

Wow that post was straight from the old British Israelism which is a cornerstone of Christian Identity

I’d watch that around here

No, no, YOU and ET want to feel "special", using "stolen glory", whether your ancestors actually here of not in colonial days and for having someone who owned slaves. You're the only "true Americans" and everyone else, who came afterwards, never did actually add to the greatness that once was America, because after all, their ancestors only bought passage on a ship, after the Revolutionary War. Right ?

Would that make anyone vaguely related to Benedict Arnold "superior" to Ronald Reagan, because his ancestors didn't arrive on these shores until later?

Look, all I was posting about was the fact that not every American, who lives here today, can trace their ancestors to people who owned slaves, nor to Tidewater, Virginia! I'm correct and your snide, smarmy, puerile post only reflects badly upon you.

And, thus, you could have also had slave holders in your
lineage. In fact, I am sure we all did. It is part of
the human story.

Really ? "VISITORS" ?

At least WE didn't own slaves, now take credit for what long dead, extremely distant relatives by marriage might have done, fought in ALL of Americas wars and battles since coming here, and added greatly to this nation in many different ways.

There always have been good and bad in every type of group; however, it's your sort who not only paint with too broad a brush, but are incapable of seeing reality. You ignored my post about Reagan, what's the matter, afraid of the truth, or don't you think that he was one of the great presidents?

Do you realize that you sound like a member of the KKK? They too were/are against ALL immigrants.

You already established that you and your family had nothing to do with America other than buying a boat ticket here. So who cares what trash you spew about Americans whose family stories are American history? You’re just a gasbag with bad manners and a twisted mind. No wonder whatever rathole you came from booted you out.

With every post, you prove just how little you know about factual American history, your fellow posters, and the contributions that those who legally came to America after its founding.

The likes of Jonas Salk, Leo Szilard, Nikola Tesla, John Philip Sousa, and Ronald Reagan, amongst many others, were all examples of those who easily refute the premise of original post ( NOT WRITTEN BY YOU !) I responded to to with facts. Many who have a vague and somewhat tenuous connection, some not even through a bloodline, to the earliest Americans, have added nothing of value to this nation; but rather, been detrimental to it.

It's pointedly ironic and hypocritical for you to bring up "bad manners", you claim others have. You're getting more desperate and funny with every post.

I know all about the revisionism popular with tourists of your ilk. You never stop yammering about how America was nothing until you wandered off whatever steamship carted you over. It’s the oldest form of political correctness and no surprise that you’d glom onto it like a raccoon grabbing a pile of fish guts.

Even if everyone did have slavery in their family (which I am not willing to accept) that’s no justification to put us all on the hook for reparations to the current generation of perpetual victims. And I believe that’s what discussions like this are designed for...to make us all think we all benefitted from slavery. We did not. The ones who benefitted are behind this movement to make everyone share their (justified) guilt, so as to lighten the hit on their pockets. If former slaves are to be paid reparations pay them in Confederate dollars

“Judy Walkman,a professional genealogy
researcher in southern California, was doing
some personal work on her own family tree.
She discovered that Senator Harry Reid’s
great-great uncle, Remus Reid, was hanged for
horse stealing and train robbery in Montana in
1889. Both Judy and Harry Reid share this
common ancestor.

The only known photograph of Remus shows
him standing on the gallows in Montana territory:
On the back of the picture Judy obtained during her
research is this inscription: ‘Remus Reid, horse
thief, sent to Montana Territorial Prison 1885,
escaped 1887, robbed the Montana Flyer six
times. Caught by Pinkerton detectives, convicted
and hanged in 1889.’

So Judy recently e-mailed Senator Harry Reid
for information about their great-great uncle.

[NOTE: I assume she didn’t include any of this
information.]

Harry Reid: Believe it or not, Harry Reid’s staff
sent back the following biographical sketch for
her genealogy research:

“Remus Reid was a famous cowboy in the Montana Territory .
His business empire grew to include acquisition of valuable
equestrian assets and intimate dealings with the Montana
railroad. Beginning in 1883, he devoted several years of
his life to government service, finally taking leave to resume
his dealings with the railroad. In 1887, he was a key player
in a vital investigation by the renowned Pinkerton Detective
Agency. In 1889, Remus passed away during an important
civic function held in his honor when the platform upon
which he was standing collapsed.”

“Throughout most of my life, I raised tobacco. I want you to know that with my own hands, all of my life, I put it in the plant beds and transferred it. I’ve hoed it. I’ve chopped it. I’ve shredded it, spiked it, put it in the barn and stripped it and sold it.” — Al Gore, 1988

The tobacco plot and barn were located conveniently near St. Alban’s Prep in DC.

What a fairy. My great, great, great grandmother owned slaves. She was Carry A. Nation, and her dad emancipated the slaves they owned in Missouri after the war.

None of them left. They were family. He was paying them anyway, being a preacher. It took two more generations before they left.

Fascinating to read about. She wrote a book about her life, which comes in handy when you are trying to figure out what life was really like during and just after the Civil War.

The PBS show is a white-guilt show anyway. There are few about the unsavory history of other nationalities. Do you think they’d show Obama’s “interesting” roots?

I KNOW the late Patrick Swayze’s family owned slaves as a branch of my family was right there beside them in the area around Yazoo, Mississippi.

Hmmmm...I know I do as one was Governor of Barbados, but there are some in my line from Germany that came too late to the party. No slaves there. Another ancestor from Ireland (Ulster), 3Xs great grandfather, worked with the Underground Railroad.

I have definite slave owning relatives, but they were NOT ancestors. They were another branch (Southern) paralleling my line. (Northern)

Frankly, I don’t care if anyone owned slaves in my family history, what the heck does that have to do with me?

“What does it have to do with me?”

Maybe more than you think. What I am
saying is that slavery has always been
part of the human condition. However,
the reparation activists would like everyone
to believe that only white Europeans and
their American descendants engaged in slavery.
The truth is humans participated in acquiring
slaves fairly soon after they first formed tribes
and started fighting with their neighbors.

European and, later, Americans of European
descent got into the African slave trade
relatively late so the activity is well
documented. I don’t think that you and
I or anybody else owes anything to anyone
for something that societies have done for
eons.
