Days after a national physicians group renewed its push to get the Phillies' triple-A affiliate, the Lehigh Valley IronPigs, to include vegetables on its pork-laden stadium menu, the team has agreed to add the green stalk.
But there's a catch. Bacon is involved, and, it turns out, some national publicity as well for the IronPigs' response.
....
The Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine (PCRM), a nonprofit based in Washington, asked the team on Monday to go easy on the bacon and other processed meat, which the group said is unhealthy, and get some vegetables on fans' plates.
The group also asked for a broccoli mascot to go along with others the team already has, all involving pork. The Inquirer reported on Tuesday that IronPigs president and general manager Kurt Landes said no to a broccoli character.

AAA team gives a middle finger to the left.
I live near Allentown. GO IRON PIGS. Great name, great response to bullying!
“The Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine (PCRM), a nonprofit based in Washington, asked the team on Monday to go easy on the bacon and other processed meat, which the group said is unhealthy...”
Yeah? Well more people die from hospitals than from gun shots. Why don’t you concentrate on that?
“...deep-fried bacon-cheddar broccoli bites filled with broccoli florets, real bacon and sweet onions in crisp potato breading ...”
I’m a vegetarian and it sound good to me.
Who’d they get to put on the broccoli costume? It’s not easy being green, you know.
Wonder if they give a Muslim discount?
Who goes to a ballpark to eat stuff they can eat at home?
Good for the IronPigs.
Nice ballpark, too.
I haven't seen this group rear their ugly heads in quite some time.
They are a branch of PETA. They were formed to try to make some of PETA's outlandish claims appear to have real medical backing.

In all likelihood, the group amounts to nothing more than a fax machine in the back room of PETA's Washington offices an a #Twitter hash-tag.

Who the hell cares what’s on the menu at a minor league baseball stadium. This committee is probably a militant vegan group hiding behind a facade of being a “medical” advocacy group.
They should get the Iron Chef TV show to come up with more politically incorrect foods for the IronPigs!
There's been talk for years on building a minor league park in my neck of the woods. It would draw big crowds from people such as myself who refuse to drive all the way down into Detroit, fight traffic, find parking, then pay the astronomical costs for tickets, beer, etc.........
Minor league ball and its environment is what baseball should be...............
Hey, after all, bacon is the gateway meat. You’re welcome back anytime.
I have a standing offer to a friend of mine. First steak is on me.
Are you near Mt. Clemens? I lived there or St. Clair Shores all my life until Jenny Grandstand blew me away. My town in Maryland has a minor league team. Good baseball and free fireworks every Friday, but the city made a bad deal. Games are all sold out yet the city loses money every year.
It's also probably an "organization" made up of 4 people. F-them.
” F-them.”
Works for me.
