Imagine you're a Cuban who has somehow managed to catch the cablecast of Melissa Harris-Perry's MSNBC show today. The topic is President Obama's opening toward Cuba. You're scraping by on the average Cuban monthly salary of $20/month and are thrilled at the prospect of getting a better-paying job if and when American tourists start coming in numbers.
Then suddenly you hear Harris-Perry fretting that there could be a "downside" for Cuba in letting in those American tourists. They could be a "plague" for Cuba. Impose their cultural "hegemony." !Ay caramba!

Can you imagine the horrors that will be unleashed on the poor Cubans when Spring Breakers discover Cuban beaches and other "amenities?"
Well, I think we should open it right up. Like I say, I hate that Obama did it, and why he did it. But the embargo (not a blockade) has been a failure. It has solidified Cuba as a communist country. Floods of tourism and open trade is the way of destroying the stranglehold Castroism has on that place.
We have open trade with Vietnam, China, Russia, Iraq, Pakistan, etc.
But for some odd reason, only Cuba gets the full trade and travel embargo treatment.
My sole objection to dropping the embargo is that we not allow a wave of Cubans to move here.
Plenty Cubans will become prostitutes with all of the new potential customers coming in.
“Of course to the average Cuban, leftist Americans who kowtow to Castro will be looked upon by them as idiots.”
Agree 100%. They have been destitute, and want nothing more than to earn some bucks and live a better life. I cannot imagine how they will look in shock at leftists who express any admiration for Castro.

exactly
It’s called projection.
i must be confused...
who is this person???
and why should i give a f%$k about what she thinks???
The Island might just tip over too!
Projection? True, but I don’t think anybody watches her show that isn’t paid to do so.
Ergo, Harris-Perry really “isn’t” a bad influence on Americans, since she doesn’t influence anybody.
It's not rich tourists that will help Cuba as much a free-market economy. I have a difficult time the commies will let the merchants keep much of their money. I hope I'm wrong.
It’s not just ugly Americans. I’ve read forums about rude tourists, and Germans and Russians have some pretty bad reputations as tourists in many countries. Even British tourists have poor reputations in a number of countries.
"Bleedin' Watney's Red Barrel ......"
The old republican isolationists believed that the world would infect the U.S. with its corruption.
The New Left believes that the U.S. corrupts everything it comes into contact with.
Leftists are not one bit concerned about the terrible plight of the average Cuban. They expect there to be kulaks to labor endlessly so they, the elites, can enjoy the rich life while delighting in the wise sayings of (in)Fidel...
You know, if only there was a law that restricted travel to Cuba. That would keep those Americans out.

I agree with you 100 %, and even one of my very intelligent friends who does not care for the man in white house said the same thing. We all need to face the facts, Castro will never be deposed of, the marines will never land on the beaches, ever, the best way to get rid of communism on the island is to introduce them to the good side of the free market and capitalism, and soon after they get on that, they will get hooked and bye bye communism.
Very true. Brits can be horrible tourists. And Japanese are incomprehensible rude.
We later learned that mist Europeans don't tip, and since the average Cuban makes less than $20 a month we had tipped over a week's pay.
I don't think Cubans are going to mind American tourist.
Every time that I am channel surfing, pass through MSNBC and she is doing her show, I am reminded that, “Liberalism is a mental disease.”
I recommend reading the chapter on Cuba in PJ O’Rourke’s “Eat the Rich.”
