I agree. I began reading Zhukov's Greatest Defeat: The Red Army's Epic Disaster in Operation Mars, 1942 (Modern War Studies), but had to put it down after about 2/3 of the way. The carnage was horrific.

The Mars Campaign suffered almost an equal amount of losses as the entire allied effort in WWII.

From the first book review:

Amazingly, Zhukov continued to order frontal assaults for three weeks, even though the offensive was obviously failing to achieve its objectives in the first four days. Soviet losses in the three week offensive on this front totaled at least 100,000 killed, 235,00 wounded and about 1,800 tanks. German counterattacks cut off and eliminated three Soviet corps (one tank, one mechanized, and one rifle). After the Stalingrad operation succeeded and Operation Mars failed, Soviet historians erased all mention of Zhukov's attack and instead re-wrote history to make it appear that Stalingrad always was the main effort.

“If the Russians hadn’t spent millions of lives, we never would have beaten Hitler...It doesn’t mean I am a commie for God’s sake.”

YEA IT DOES!!!! Do you understand that ANYTHING you say good about the Russians, on this site (such as the government trying to keep the society from going all gay), labels you as a TRAITOR.

Is Russia preparing to rewrite history now?

Will they claim to have won WW2 singlehandedly?

The Russians started the war when they signed the Non-Aggression Pact.

bump

Russia was using US-UK tanks, trucks, boots and everything else through lend-lease because they didn’t have nearly enough productive capacity

Just looking at military production in the last few years of WW2 tells me Hitler was destined to lose, did Russia make beating them easier?

Heck yes. That’s why we sent them millions and millions and millions of tons of war materiel. Germany having to fight on extra fronts made things much better for us. But that happened because Germany invaded Russia, the idiots.

OK, the Russians never did anything positive for anyone.

You are so obtuse it is amazing you can get anyone to converse with you.

Does the sun come up in the east every day where you live, or do you debate the actual degrees north or south depending on the day of the year.

A lot of the war was fighting inside of Russia, of course their casualties would be extremely high.

Something about lend-lease

Yes, Stalin provided a lot of cannon fodder and wasted millions of Soviet lives that didn’t have to be wasted, had the Soviets actually had somebody competent in charge, and didn’t ignore all warnings of an impending Nazi invasion.

In the summer of 1945 the Japanese were dug in to defend their home islands from an invasion originating in the South. In fact the United States was planning for such an invasion to start in early November.

Meanwhile having denounced their neutrality agreement in early April the Soviets declared war on Japan on August 8th, and were poised to attack their northernmost home island of Hokkaido in a matter of days. The Japanese simply did not have time to counter this threat, nor could they defend themselves simultaneously on two fronts.

Dropping atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki may have provided a dramatic exclamation point to ending the war with Japan, but from a strictly military perspective wasn't necessary. The Japanese ran out of strategic options when the Soviet entered the war against them.

If it wasn’t for the bomb Japan would have been divided like Korea, and the resulting Civil War would have made the Korean Conflict look like Child’s Play.

Who’s saying the Russians did nothing, not me, I acknowledge that Stalin sacrificed millions to win....I am merely pointing out the other side of the story....That the Soviets helped to start the war by giving Hitler their blessing to invade Poland, and also that Stalin’s lack of preparation led to millions dying that didn’t need to, because of his incompetence.

I kept thinking that as I read the book. This book alone should put that lie to rest.

A combination of Hillary!’s expertise in foreign affairs (her only previous experience was with Bill’s dalliances with foreign women,) and Obama’s promised “flexibility” after the election.

“I would suggest that if you went onto to the street of any US city and asked people, there would be complete ignorance. Yes, students of history would get it, but not the average joe.”

Most Americans 50 years ago never learned which nations fought on which side in WWII. Their history classes typically only get to the American Civil War by the end of the semester, but if they are lucky spend a day or two on WWI and WWII along with a smattering of a few other 20th Century subjects. Nowadays the schools are even worse than they were 50 years ago. When they do teach the 20th Century history, they do so through a prism of Communist and leftist indoctrination with false propaganda and false revisionist history. So,, it is no surprise whatsoever that your typical American is ignorant and oblivious to most any kind of history and current events.

Even among students of military history the prolific Soviet disinformation and revisionist history has a tendency to influence Western readers through the sheer repetition of the false information. The role of the Soviet Union in WWII is a key example of this Russian rewriting of history to make itself look more important at the very least if not virtually the sole victor at the very most.

The rate things are going the only things they will teach about WWII is that we were evil for dropping the nukes on Japan and incarcerating Japanese citizens and for bombing Dresden, and that the only reason the Allies won the war was because of the Soviet Union.
