WASHINGTON — A 17-year-old transgender youth, Leelah Alcorn, stunned her friends and a vast Internet audience in December when she threw herself in front of a tractor-trailer after writing in an online suicide note that religious therapists had tried to convert her back to being a boy.
In response, President Obama this week will call for an end to such psychiatric therapies aimed at “repairing” gay, lesbian and transgender youth, White House officials said. His decision on the sensitive issue is the latest example of his continuing embrace of gay rights.
In a statement to be posted on Wednesday evening alongside a WhiteHouse.gov petition begun in honor of Ms. Alcorn, Mr. Obama will condemn the psychiatric practice, sometimes called “conversion” or “reparative” therapy, which is supported by some socially conservative organizations and religious doctors. The petition has received more than 120,000 signatures in three months.
“We share your concern about its potentially devastating effects on the lives of transgender as well as gay, lesbian, bisexual and queer youth,” the statement, written by Valerie Jarrett, a senior adviser to Mr. Obama, says, according to a copy obtained by The New York Times. “As part of our dedication to protecting America’s youth, this administration supports efforts to ban the use of conversion therapy for minors.”
In an interview on Wednesday, Ms. Jarrett said Mr. Obama was moved by the story of Ms. Alcorn’s suicide. But she said the problem went far beyond her.
“It was tragic, but I will tell you, unfortunately she has a lot of company,” Ms. Jarrett said. “It’s not the story of one young person. It is the story of countless young people who have been subjected to this.”

And since it is volitional behavior, it is ineligible to be the basis for any claim to so-called rights associated with it, including marriage.

Yep, if he had been left free to mutilate himself to his heart’s content, he probably would have committed suicide eventually anyway. The only path to happiness for someone like this is to confront the underlying issues that cause them to pathologically reject their own true identity, in favor of a mental fantasy.

What they call transgenderism is still listed in the DSM as a mental illness. Gender dysphoria, I believe. But no therapy?

Illinois has a pending Conversion Therapy Bill - HB0217
Synopsis As Introduced
Creates the Youth Mental Health Protection Act. Defines “mental health provider” and “sexual orientation change efforts” or “conversion therapy”. Provides that no mental health provider shall engage in sexual orientation change efforts with a person under the age of 18. Provides that a mental health provider shall not refer a client or patient to any individual for the purpose of sexual orientation change efforts. Further provides that any sexual orientation change effort attempted on a person under the age of 18 or any referral made by a mental health provider shall be considered unprofessional conduct and shall be subject to discipline by the licensing entity or disciplinary review board with competent jurisdiction.
Three amendments have been made since HB0217 was introduced. Illinoisans, please call your State Rep to oppose this bill.

And governor Pence is a republican. Not only did he take away the right to freedom of expression, religion, and association in his state, he's also taking away parental rights.

He’s following the lead of humpty dumpty Christie who has already outlawed “conversion” therapy in NJ. Maybe both Obamagabe and lardass Christie are going through the “transition”, like Brucie Jenner.

For what it’s worth... I’d suggest that the “religious therapist” needs to become more of an advisor who has the cooperation of the family’s church clergy and congregation inasmuch as that is possible... his or her trying to be the big shot in the picture is probably counterproductive. It really does take a village — of committed Christians.
