One aspect of the religious freedom controversy thats not getting much attention is its similarity to the debate over Obamacare. The same issue lies at the heart of both namely, whether the government can force people to enter into contracts against their will.
In the case of Obamacare, the Supreme Court basically rejected the administrations constitutional arguments, then bizarrely decided the law was OK because the penalty for not complying was a tax, not a fine. In other words, the government cant make you buy health insurance, but it CAN tax you if you dont.
Now several states have passed religious freedom laws, designed to protect citizens from being forced into contracts not just against their will but contrary to their religious convictions.

It's time to end Husseincare.
ObamaCARE - DEATH and TAXES for the nonEXEMPT
and nonMoslems.
How American is that? IT IS NOT, SCOTUS!

I can’t wait til his presidency is ended.
That’s what President Hillery used to say. Do you still look back on Obamacare with nostalgia now that Hillery care is the law of the land?
Sharia LaW? Muslim president?
More of the same is sure to follow in January 2017 with the endorsement of the “American people.”
GA FReeper ping.
Good column by a local writer in a local publication that one of you FReepmailed me about.
Not only that, but even taking the taxing authority at face value, Fedzilla still has NO authority re: insurance/healthcare.
Just because they have the ability to tax (and they do, but not in this way...I digress), they have to authority to enforce any Citizen to enter into any contract/service.
The whole ACA is moot, but the oligarchy of govt cannot logically think past the 1st part, w/out undermining their prior usurpation.
I guess that’s why Bozo came out w/ ‘mandatory voting’, if one can be forced into a contract such as healthcare, one can easily be forced to vote too.
Thanks for posting this. It seems that every totalitarian nightmare could actually happen.
