It was 1970 and the leftist fueled anti-Vietnam War protests were in full swing.
The anti-war protestors liked to show up and shout down their opponents much like the brownshirted thugs would go after adversaries of the Nazi Party in Germany around 1930.
The anti-war crowd disrupted politicians of all stripes when they tried to speak.
Just like the LGBT protestors of today call the religious conservative opponents of gay marriage "bigots", "Nazis" or "KKK" the anti-war crowd called their opponents "fascists" and "storm troopers"
On March 19, 1970 the anti-war protestors came to Santa Barbara, California to disrupt an appearance by the governor.
How does a leader respond to such protest. Before it all began Governor Ronald Reagan spoke to the media and said:
"THESE YOUNG HYPOCRITES WOULD TRY TO HAVE YOU BELIEVE THAT THEY IN SOME WAY ARE REPRESENTING REASONED LIBERAL FREEDOM OF THOUGHT AND THAT THE REST OF US ARE THE STORM TROOPERS WHEN THE PLAIN TRUTH OF THE MATTER IS EVERY TACTIC, EVERYTHING THEY'RE DOING IS RIGHT OUT OF THE HITLER YOUTH MANUAL YOU COULD ALMOST SAY"
After the soundbite a radio newscaster said this:
"AND GOVERNOR REAGAN SAID THE YOUNG MILITANTS ARE INSENSITIVE TO OTHER PEOPLE'S SUFFERING OR RIGHTS"
The times and technology have changed but doesn't that just accurately describe those militant forces backed by corporate elites who are now attacking the religious freedom of individuals and small business owners in America.
We need leadership and presidential candidates who are willing to use these terms to describe the situation in America today and rally the defense of freedom.
Many Republicans ranging from Jeb Bush to Scott Walker to Republican governors of Indiana and Arkansas have been pretty wishy washy and or caved this week on Constitutional freedoms for Americans.
I miss Reagan. He had a clear vision and was a good leader.
Reagan was wise enough not to call out the Guard and start killing the student protestors like the Ohio Guv did a couple of weeks later.
And the Leftists know it. Watch for an upcoming full-court press.
They weren’t really student protesters as much as radical agitators daring the lead to fly and too self confident in their belief that they were “untouchable”. The events at Kent State proved they weren’t. They could, and did, bleed like any other delusional rabblerousers. In short, they got what they “asked for”. Then, like spoiled babies, they ran and cried when responded to by force and their noses were bloodied. They played a dangerous game and paid a price. Lucky for them, not more were whacked.
The protests over Cambodia like Kent State would come around six weeks after this.
Nixon announced the Cambodia incursion April 30th, the protestors got shot on May 4th at Kent State.
Months afterwards my steelworker uncle took my father and I out to his backyard in Ohio and looked across at his neighbors property, the home of one of the dead protestors. My uncle expressed his utter contempt for the family.
The hardhats (construction workers) were disgusted with the anti-war protestors as left wing extremists. In New York City on May 8th they came out and stormed City Hall to raise Old Glory to full staff. The liberal Republican mayor, John Lindsay, had ordered the flag lowered to half staff in honor of the dead protestors.
I happened to arrive in NYC that evening as a child and remember seeing the anti-war protestors marching into Times Square from my hotel room 20 stories up. They carried four coffins to signify the dead protestors.
Some people are still fighting the Viet Nam war like some people are still fighting the Civil War
The end in Nam came 40 years ago this month, not to mention the start of the “Killing Fields” in Cambodia.
The Commies cleaned up.
I may post some on that later in the month.
I was emotionally drawn into the event reciting each day’s developments into my cassette tape recorder.
‘After the soundbite a radio newscaster said this:
“AND GOVERNOR REAGAN SAID THE YOUNG MILITANTS ARE INSENSITIVE TO OTHER PEOPLE’S SUFFERING OR RIGHTS”’
That’s putting it mildly.

Now those “Young Hypocrites” are in charge of the executive branch of our government, appeasing all our enemies.
One of my realtives was going school around the time of anti war movement he remember seeing Reagan then Governor Reagan being diss by radicals
Its kinda like his way of shoving the middle finger of conservatism right back at them...
A few self-anointed “conservatives” could learn a thing or two, or three from the big guy...
They werent really student protesters as much as radical agitators
Also true for Kent State.
Where the people were killed is now a parking lot. There’s a marker, IIRC.
IIRC, there is still question on who fired the first shot. Radicals were in town. Personally, I wonder where the Weathermen were.
We should also make it clear that no one here is defending LBJ’s escalation of the war, which was done so he could defend himself against valid criticisms from Goldwater supporters (while slandering Goldwater as a warmonger at the same time).
