Mental illness made the Germanwings co-pilot a victim along with his passengers
Los Angeles Times ^ | 2 APR 2015 | Robert M. Sapolsky

What are we to make of Andreas Lubitz piloting a Germanwings airplane into the side of a mountain? There is an unhelpful tautology, meant to be explanatory, that arises at times like this. How could someone have done something this evil? Because they were evil. Or: How could someone have done something this heartless? Because they were heartless..

This professor of biology, neurology and neurosurgery at Stanford is clearly nuts. Oh...sorry. He must be depressed.

Evil. That’s the only word I can think of. Evil.

Victims don’t opt to take 151 others with them into the side of a mountain. That’s someone who decided that his own personal escape mattered much more than the lives of all those left in his care, never mind their extended friends and families.

I’m pretty certain that he’s already paying additional consequences for that action now.

Mental illness of homosexuality is more to the truth.
This was a hate crime and terrorist act of revenge on heterosexuals by someone who was gay.

These idiots think no one is responsible for their actions. Except White male Christians.

Adolf Hitler must have been clinically depressed since he chose to lead the entire German nation to destruction.

I don’t need to understand every murderer. You could spend the rest of your life trying to understand murderers, and you would go to your grave not understanding them.

I just want to keep them from murdering.

This guy was identified as a problem, and everyone involved politely looked the other way.

“Who am I to judge him?”

Well, those other 149 dead people wish someone would have judged him.

I live in Germany, and can say there’s no evidence of a connection to religion of any type for this guy.

He was a four-star nutcase, waiting for something to occur.

It appears he was typical and normal...up until the point where he signs up for the Germanwings pilot training program (they were actually going to pay for this). He passes the physical and the mental exam. He has a single engine license and a glider license, prior to the company deal.

He goes off to Arizona where the training school was location. Somewhere in the 2nd or 3rd month....he develops issues....sees a local mental doc and he diagnoses the guy with panic attacks, stress, and anxiety...severe enough that it’s causing what he thinks is depression and bad nerves. The kid works out an agreement where he goes for treatment (no one ever says where or what was involved). Three or four months later...he comes back into the program.

He gets to full status around the end of 2012 and starts flying for the airline as a co-pilot. Then he starts to show more problems, which the doctors take the original diagnosis and say more depression....giving him more pills....thus medicating him.

The evidence shows that he had issues with the pills and saw no relief....just more problems. He collected up a large assortment of the pills...appearing NOT to take any for maybe the last six months.

Personally, I think he was wrongly diagnosed back six years ago, and this was alot more than anxiety and depression. I should note here that fellow pilots jumped all over him in 2013 when he put himself on different duty....steward duty....instead of pilot duty (less stress I guess). They gave him the name....’Tomato Andy’....which is German slang for suggesting he was gay.

The guy had a girlfriend for the last couple of years...but you have to suspect that he was bi and maybe part of his stress issues was that he was living some double life and couldn’t handle it.

So, four-star nutcase that no one knew his entire personality.

***And here is where there is the greatest danger. Mental illness of every stripe is always shrouded in stigma, compromising fair access to employment,***

I may be wrong here, but didn’t he have a good job?

And why would we want a mentally ill person flying a plane in the first place.

Some people are just educated way beyond their intelligence.

A victim? Perhaps. But it doesn’t give him the right to make further victims out of innocent people.

Regardless of his mental issues or personal problems, the man was evil and a monster.

End of discussion.

You are right!!

One does not have to understand evil to eliminate it.

But of course, that’s “simplistic”

Well, he certainly has the credentials to write the article and as someone who has experienced severe depression in others close to me, I am convinced that most of what he says is true. However, attempts to explain evil acts in the context of mental health presupposes that we think we know more than we do. Mental health professionals always seem better with explanations that they do pedictions and interventions. The killer pilot does not to me appear a victim to the extent the good doctor describes, particularly when one reads about the deception and planning that were all part of the killer pilot’s evil scheme. To emphasize mental health theory while ignoring the reality of evil seems a very inadequate explanation to me.

Nothing to do with mental illness.

It’s all about the religion of ‘PC’ and the idiocy of the general public when it comes to accepting dangerous and fraudulent PC propaganda.

Well, being mentally ill doesn’t rule out other problems as well. I’d say that he was evil, heartless, AND mentally ill.

So the co-pilot’s a victim now.

Hell, kill hundreds of people and destroy billions in property, and hey, what the heck, you were a victim.

Good grief there are a lot of misguided ignorant people out there.

Did this SOB ever think of seeking help? Did he think of the impact this would have on thousands of people?
