Mike Pence: 'Was I expecting this kind of backlash? Heavens no.'

(CNN)—Gov. Mike Pence pledged Tuesday to "fix" Indiana's controversial religious freedom law to clarify that it does not allow discrimination against gays and lesbians.

But he insisted the problem isn't the law itself but how it's being perceived, saying a fix is needed only because of "frankly, the smear that's been leveled against this law." And he said the fix won't involve statewide anti-discrimination protections for LGBT Hoosiers.

The first-term Republican governor sought to tamp down the backlash Indiana has faced since he signed the law -- which its in-state supporters had claimed would allow businesses to turn away LGBT customers -- last week. He said he's asking state lawmakers to send him a followup measure before this week's end to ensure that's not the case.

"It would be helpful to move legislation this week that makes it clear that this law does not give businesses a right to deny services to anyone," Pence said in a press conference in Indianapolis on Tuesday.

Again, I must ask: What about the role of the Indiana legislature in all this? And ultimately, the citizens of Indiana? I hope Hoosiers are burning the phones up. Their Governor made them out to be fools today.

I want that idiot Tim Cook to put his money where his mouth is. Stop doing buisness with any State or Country that “discriminates” against gays.

There’s a lot more to this than just religion.

Does one give up any Right when opening a biz? Association? How ‘bout right to refuse service?

Next I’ll be hearing is the Socialist pretzel logic construct of ‘public accommodation’....as if the biz was created, setup and paid BY/FOR the public. Many another ‘nuance’ I’m not familiar, or some penumbra only the oligarchs can discern from the plain English of the Constitution.

Course, I suspect that’s the ‘price’ to pay when one allows govt to require APPROVAL to live (open a biz...hell, to WORK).

I just received the following email from an old and dear friend who taught school back when teaching school meant the “Three R’s” and DID NOT include Marxist political correctness indoctrination. I pass it along as possible food for thought for those of us who grasp the “end game” of this perniciously pestilential process.
“Dick, on this ‘Freedom of Religion’ law:
I think most people get the word ‘religion’ confused in their thinking——we have many people here of other religions.
If their religion required them to close their business at sundown  and there were people of other faiths who wanted to do business with them, would they have to open for those who want to do business with them?
Dick, where is the country that I once lived in many, many years ago?
Mary”
To which I replied:
Mary, The country in which you and I grew up has been hijacked by a consortium of lownoinfo voters (thank you government schools and the Marxists now running them) and venal, self-serving politicians who believe that if they either remain silent to the ongoing “transformation” (much of the GOP) or aid and abet the process (ALL the Dems who are now indistinguishable from the Stalinists who captured Russia), they will be elevated to princes in the new regime.
Ernst Rohm and the others who assisted Hitler in his conquest of Germany held similar beliefs. He was rewarded with a bullet in the head in a prison cell. His associates died in “The Night of the Long Knives”, the lucky ones killed outright, the unlucky ones slowly strangled hanging from hooks like so many butchered cattle.
What these current fools and accomplices of this new tyranny fail to understand is that the history of tyranny is filled with such stories. The tyrant will not tolerate the existence of ANY groups or individuals who might come to threaten his tyranny.

“ALL men lose when freedom fails and good men rot in filthy jails.  And those who cried “Appease, appease” are HANGED by those they sought to please.”

Love to you and yours as we enter perhaps the most dangerous 660 days in our lifetime.
Dick

You should realize by now that Democrats dictate the GOP agenda. We have no opposition party. There’s an old proverb, “just because one uses a prosaic metaphor, doesn’t make their position true.” Actually, I just made it up, but it’s good don’t you think? Anyway, try cutting off a tumor to fight a cancer. How about killing the enemy within so you can kill the enemy without? The GOP is actively fighting us. They’re growing government and enriching their cronies and taking our liberty. They have to go if we’re going to have a party that represents us.

Clearly you give up some rights when you open a business. You can't discriminate against protected classes. You are forced to collect and pay taxes and abide by all other laws related to the business you are in.

The GOP is about to remove real marriage from their platform. And anyway, what about that platform of theirs? Abortion has been the law of the land since 1974. It’s been in the platform for how long? What have they done? They sure come out every 2 years and say how pro-life they are. It gets them elected. Maybe that’s why it’s still legal.

Of course the Rats are evil. They always have been. What I want to know is why their agenda rules the day when the majority of people in the country are right of center, the majority of legislators are “Conservative,” and the majority of governors are Republican. We’re in a crisis and the GOP got us here. We’d better organize quick or we’ll be overwhelmed completely. I know a lot of conservatives who are about to give up because of the this GOP of ours.

I never felt Pence was tough enough to be Presidential. He is just too nice a guy.

That said, our side loses because we do not get out in the streets and fight for anything.

The other side does. Astro turf or not, they do what we will not.

There are still a bunch of clueless people out there. They’re just going about their daily lives, and don’t know that a big chunk of the population, and the whole political apparatus is at war with them.

“Which, I assume, would include gay couples wanting a photographer or a wedding cake. So why not just repeal the law? “

He can’t without losing total face and getting his rural base even more POd than they are now.

My guess is that language will be added that makes this acceptable to the masses (like the federal bill) and then both sides can declare victory.

He backed up really fast. I wonder if he got a memo from the NCAA or the NFL.
I guess it could have been the tech companies as well.

It’s one thing to defend morality when you don’t have to face and real consequences. It’s a whole different animal when big money corps and associations like the NCAA start making noise about leaving your state.

The NCAA, NASCAR, and the pro leagues have made their displeasure known publicly. They didn't have to send a memo.

This doesn’t seem as if it was thought out very well.

“Does seem to have backfired, doesn’t it?”

Yes it does.
It will be interesting to see what happens in Arkansas.
The Governor there is about to have the same bill land on his desk and he says he’s going to sign it.

Walmart corp has already started naysaying the bill.
Maybe Walmart can exert enough pressure on their own to get the bill changed.
I’m not sure Arkansas has enough corp sponsored tourism, like a pro sports team or the NCAA, to be swayed by a boycott or what they have for tech industry.

It’s going to be interesting to watch.

Clearly? I presume that you being facetious. When was that Amendment passed? What Amendment # allowed govt to dictate how MY biz or MY occupation shall be construed?

If I, as a biz owner, wished to deny service/entry to any ‘class’ of people, I, as the owner/proprietor (whom pays the rent/bills/paychecks/taxes/etc.) have every Right to do so.

Must be somewhere in the paperwork...like the IRS: the MANDATORY ‘voluntary’ filings are signed ‘under penalty of perjury’ (IE: As if one had a CHOICE).

IMO, too many people have given too little of the notion that RIGHTS belong to the INDIVIDUAL.

Yet, people only (somehow) only ‘latch’ upon the pro-drug (IE: Freedom, Liberty and personal responsibility [and others, one of which even *I* vehemently oppose]) of the (L) party...even after this type of debate.
