At Starbucks annual shareholders meeting in Seattle on Wednesday a shareholder complained to Billionaire CEO, Schultz about the fact that Starbucks has lost customers because of its support of gay marriage.
Starbucks supported Washingtons states referendum backing gay marriage last year and in response the National Organization for Marriage started a boycott of the company. Tom Stobhar, founder of Corporate Morality Action Center, complained about the companys support of gay marriage, citing that the companys support for gay marriage has resulted in boycotts against the company that have cost Starbucks a considerable amount of business.
In the first full quarter after this boycott was announced, our sales and earningshall we say politely were a bit disappointing. Stobhar said.
This prompted Shultz to engage with Stobhar saying,
Not every decision is an economic decision. Despite the fact that you recite statistics that are narrow in time, we did provide a 38% shareholder return over the last year. I dont know how many things you invest in, but I would suspect not many things, companies, products, investments have returned 38% over the last 12 months. Having said that, it is not an economic decision to me. The lens in which we are making that decision is through the lens of our people. We employ over 200,000 people in this company, and we want to embrace diversityof all kinds. If you feel, respectfully, that you can get a higher return than the 38% you got last year, its a free country You can sell your shares in Starbucks and buy in another company. Thank you very much.
To which, the crowd erupted in applause. This shareholders crowd might have been pleased with Starbucks decisions but other groups are very annoyed. Websites like DumpStarbucks.com and manny others have popped up who aim to boycott the company as long is it remains opposed to Biblical marriage. Dump Starbucks has a petition that has over 49,000 signatures against Starbucks. Many shareholders are taking Schutlzs advice and are indeed selling their shares.
Two words: “Dunkin’ Donuts.”
Their prices are better, their coffee is far superior, and their CEO isn’t dragging them into oblivion with a series of ill-advised socio-political statements. They greet you warmly, serve up the product, and you’re on your way.
“The world is a fd-up, cup of liberal piss.(a Starby fav)”
One venti macchiato whipped with two shots of liberal piss, coming right up! That’ll be $8.05, please, you homophobic racist! ;-)
Starbucks is about the worse tasting coffer there is and paying 3 or times the price for a cup is insanity...
It would be surprising if many poor people drink their swill. Starbucks only locates in trendy areas, so to some degree they self-discriminate to cull their clientele.
That’s nice, however there are only 3 Dunkin Donuts in the whole L.A. area.
hey senore’ Schultz ,
Take your snotty high and mighty attitude,
your overpriced too strong coffee and shove it.
Twenty years ago....Starbucks had four-star coffee and everyone else had two-star coffee. In the past decade...everyone improved (even McDonalds today...has premium coffee). They might have held some advantage in the 1990s but it’s just another gimmick today and frankly...over-priced. If you buy the same quality coffee for sixty-percent of what Starbucks charges...why waste your money?
As people realize this...the sales gimmick will decrease and I think within the next decade...around thirty-percent of the Starbucks shops will disappear. They might still have a hold on airport situations but I think their growth period is finished.
Never had a cup of Starbucks; never will. Never owned an Apple product; never will. I get thru my day just fine.
I wonder what this pinhead thinks about Mozilla’s CEO who was fired for a small donation in support of a group committed to traditional marriage.
Schultz, you idiot, I don’t have shares in Star-Sucks BECAUSE I don’t support gay marriage AND I don’t drink your overpriced insipid coffee.
Oh, Karma is sweet.
I am grateful when liberals waste their money, but how does supporting SSM improve shareholder value?
Why no Starbucks locations in the Hood?
How about voting for a new CEO at the next stockholders meeting?
“I do not patronize Starbucks . . . “
I don’t either. Never have, never will.
Oh, I know, but that's what the libs would say if Chik-fil-a raised its prices to a commensurate level.
I will not go to Starbucks ever again.
