Republicans are quietly strategizing to delete gay marriage from the party's 2016 platform.
National Journal ^ | 03/29/2015 | Alex Roarty

Late last summer, with midterms consuming the attention of the political class, a group of GOP activists spent two days in Des Moines trying to convince their fellow Republicans that change was coming to their party. With eyes on 2016, they attended the Iowa State Fair, talked with newspaper editorial boards, and even ventured onto conservative talk radio. To cap it off, on the last evening, supporters gathered at 801 Chophouse, the upscale watering hole of the city's political elite, as if to announce their movement had gone mainstream. That it couldn't be dismissed as fringe any longer.

Their issue, in a state where evangelical Christians remain the heart of the GOP base, was support for same-sex marriage.

The reception was smaller than expected—just about 50 people came—and included a lineup of supporters already deeply involved in the GOP's gay-marriage movement. Yet while it would have to be described as underwhelming, the event nonetheless signaled movement. "Here you have a conservative reception for activists to come in and talk marriage equality in a central hub of political activity," says Jeff Angelo, a former state senator who is now chairman of Iowa Republicans for Freedom, a pro-gay-marriage group. "That's not usual."

Indeed, it's not. Less than 10 years ago, the last Republican who would go on to win the presidency traveled conservative America touting a series of "one man, one woman" state constitutional amendments. But the task that day in Iowa wasn't to show Republicans how much has changed in a decade or to nudge them toward acceptance of those unions. It was to force them to concede that going neutral on gay marriage is critical to winning the White House.

I surely hope so. I’ve just heard teens and young adults express the opposite view (friendly to the gay agenda). But, perhaps it is to shock their parents and their parents’ friends!

That’s why the Democrat-in-all-but-name Rand Paul wants it.

The headline is misleading, and I presume that was a deliberate choice. This isn't about GOP-e or "uniparty" or any other of the favorite, largely imaginary, bugbears, it's about a small group of pro-gay-marriage activists.

It certainly would be nice if any of the Noise Machine FINOs would ever read any of these articles -- but of course, that's not why they're here.

Yeah. Peer pressure (learned behavior - intimidation and fear of punishment) or verbal rebellion.
The good news is - where their is force, their is an equal and opposing force that pushes back.

We need to destroy Hollywood, and we need to Destroy Liberal Democrat control of the News Streams. Till we address these propaganda and misinformation streams, we are going to be unable to move the nation towards stability.

I agree with that completely. It would be nice if conservatives got to the point where they competed with the mainstream media, but there are so few conservative media outlets that it takes about a week to begin having the conservative ideas on any event percolate into the national discussion.

Nothing new about this. Republican non Christians have wanted social issues to go away for decades.

Well, what IS new is that they're actually talking about removing it from the (practically meaningless, complete-waste-of-everyone's-time) party platform.

I'll never forget how disgusted and annoyed I was by all the single-issue voters who showed up at my caucus in 1988 to support Pat Robertson. I was a very different person back then (young, enthusiastic and dead).

If they embrace so-called “marriage equality” they will break this party.

If they embrace abortion, the party will break.

If they embrace “comprehensive immigration reform” the party will break.

Really, this party is half a degree away from hitting the iceberg head on.

If they succeed they are done as a party the evangelicals will vote 3rd party or stay home in droves. I have never seen an organization so willing to let it’s adversary makes it’s rules, pick it’s platform, and it’s leaders and candidates.

The majority has no one to turn to. They have no one to vote for.

The problem is, we no longer represent the majority view. I have pondered this problem a long time, and it seems to me that much of the problem we are facing is due to the fact that the US Government has been on a massive spending party for the last fifty years, on borrowed money.

Nobody wants the gravy train to stop, and that's why they bribe nearly fifty percent of the population with government money.

I have come to regard borrowed money as the fuel of Liberalism. It is how they stay in power, and the love of it corrupts them. The bribes to the populace corrupts others.

I agree with that completely. It would be nice if conservatives got to the point where they competed with the mainstream media, but there are so few conservative media outlets that it takes about a week to begin having the conservative ideas on any event percolate into the national discussion.

I have long felt that Bill Whittle, Roger Simon, Glenn Reynolds, and the other members of PJ Media have exactly the right idea. What they lack is the funds necessary to become competitive with the Left-wing Media industry.

Glenn Beck was doing good work for awhile, but I think he has since lost his way. Some are even accusing him of going over to the other side.

One of the things I love about Ted Cruz is the fact that he knows who the enemy are, and he's ready for them. (Unlike Romney, McCain, and George HW Bush.)

Ted Cruz has said that each state should decide. But the Supreme Court is going to override the ability of states to define marriage. So where do we go from here, if we want to keep battling on this issue?

At the moment, I am at a loss to proffer any response which doesn't turn ugly.

But then, I think turning ugly is more or less baked into the "gay" wedding cake we are going to be forced to eat.

Moronic to address it in that manner. You alienate people who want to “feel good” about “supporting Equality”. The REAL solution is to simply get government out of the business of treating married and single people differently. Same taxes, same insurance regs, etc etc. Then every issue on “Gay Marriage” goes away, without a single reference to sexual preference or faith.

And that solves the problem of forcing people to bake "gay" wedding cakes how?

What you advocate is a capitulation on officially recognized normalcy. I don't think you are going to like where we end up if we travel that road.

I believe the government should not be neutral on questions of morality. That "all opinions are valid" is a liberal canard, and one that we should allow the government to adopt at our peril.

If we can do something similar with marriage, I would be all in. I just question whether the culture has moved on so much on this issue.

It has been pushed on by the usage of massive streams of pro-gay liberal propaganda being fed into our homes in the form of "entertainment."

The liberals have a weapon that we do not have. They control the microphones and transmitters and they direct the public's attention. They show them what to think about by providing them examples in the form of public plays with actors.

They mislead people about reality by using fakery to create the illusion of "gay" people acting like heterosexuals. (Monogamous, not disease ridden, and not prone to group orgies and hundreds of "sex" partners.)

Oh, and as a follow up, to fight back, we do what we can to wreck them financially. The best Idea i've heard in the last seven years is "Repeal the Hollywood tax cuts." That idea has been persistently advocated by "Instapundit" Glenn Reynolds.

The Democrats have long used the government as a weapon to use against their opponents. It's long past the time we started doing the same thing. Scott Walker is killing the Unions in Wisconsin.

I agree, they should, its a losing issue, actually, its lost already. Public attitudes have changed, why tilt at this windmill, its a loser now.

Why fret about an evil that has become popular? It's not like we can do anything about it. We should just wait around till the next version of Kristallnacht comes along.
