NEWARK, N.J. Michelle Obama celebrated the beauty, power and tenacity of black woman while spreading her own message of education for girls at Black Girls Rock!, an annual event honoring trailblazing women of color from all walks of life.
"No matter who you are, no matter where you come from, you are beautiful," Obama told the crowd, which included many young black girls.
"I am so proud of you. My husband, your president, is so proud of you," she added. "We have so much hope and dreams for you."

“Here is how to rock” or something like that with good advice would fit such a scenario. This is tired old liberal self esteemery.
What, no hashtags?
Girls who acclimate to American cultural value that didn’t come from the sewer certainly “rock”. Only a true racist would bring color into the discussion.
#blackgirlsrock ???
Please don't remind me!
(rednecks come in many colors)
Yeah, I’ve seen news photos and videos of black girls rocking.
At The MacDonalds, on the subway, at the mall, junior high parking lots.
Thank heaven for the ones that are the exception.
“...Part of it is culture and the effect of bad government policy. I have no problem with Michelle attending and speaking at such an event.”
Your point is well taken. My concern is with Michelle reinforcing the message (even if couched in “positivity”) that race is what defines these girls, that they are part of a group because they are black.
Laura Bush would never have gone to an event and declared that “White girls rock”. This isn’t due to reverse racism. No one in our society would ever think to group all white girls together because of their race. It is understood that there are all sorts of white girls, with varying backgrounds, abilities and potentials.
To me this is the great crime of “Progressives”, the unending drumbeat that if you’re black you are part of a defined group - there’s only one way you should think, only one way you should vote.
Right, and I understand that.
But those young black girls do face a black-specific reality in terms of perceived beauty and practical mating options that is very challenging. I can’t really fault generally harmless efforts to give them more support to fight the negative culture they grow up in.
PS Some Freepers condemn the Obamas for not doing more to specifically address the dysfunction in the black community.
(I condemn them for their politics.)
Black girls riot.
There is no black community. there is no homogeneity
there are a series of subcultures of black people that vary widely in all sorts of aspects.
the disfunction exists within the black urban subculture that consists of people that have purposely ended up in a cul de sac as a result of endless bad decisions made because of laziness
At least you are being honest about your racial proclivity. You don't believe in this colorblind BS. If more people would be forthright then maybe we could have the 'honest conversation on race' that Holder espoused about.
I also don’t fault black women for straightening their hair.
is twerking “assuming the position”?
I do believe in the colorblind ideal. I’d do away with government-supported discrimination long before I’d come down on such programs (yes, I know by being there she makes it government-supported) meant to bolster black girls, who do have significant family-formation challenges in our culture.
