Plans for an ambitious 12,400-mile superhighway linking the Atlantic and the Pacific are reportedly being considered by Russian authorities.
The Trans-Eurasian Belt Development would see the construction of a vast motorway across Russia. It would connect with existing networks in Europe, making road trips to eastern Russia a far easier proposition. While roads do currently run across most of Russia, the quality tends to deteriorate the farther you travel from Moscow.
The proposal, outlined in the Siberian Times, would see the road follow a similar route to the Trans-Siberian railway, through cities including Yekaterinburg, Irkutsk, and Vladivostok. A new high-speed train line would also be constructed, along with pipelines for gas and oil. The rail network may also be extended to the Chukotka region of Russia and across the Bering Strait to Alaska making overland trips from Britain to the US (via the Channel Tunnel) a possibility.
The idea, which developers hope will help boost tourism and make Russia a global transportation hub, was presented at a meeting of the Russian Academy of Science.
Vladimir Fortov, the head of the Russian Academy of Science, said the project was "very ambitious and expensive."...

Well if you count dirt roads and back trails you would be able to drive from South Africa (Johannesburg) to South America (South Argentina)
They should take care of the dirt roads they have first. Many between town roads that are heavily traveled are dirt in summer and a quagmire in the rainy season.
Sounds like an awesome engineering project.
It might be hard for them to do. Those dirt main roads are pretty much what saved them from Nazi Germany in World War II.
“Are we there yet, Daddy, are we there yet?”
“I have to go to the bathroom!”
“Mommy, Billy won’t stop tickling me!”
“Are we there yet, Daddy, are we there yet?”
“I’m not kicking your seat, Billy’s kicking your seat!”
“Am not!”
“Am too!”
“Am not!”
“Am too!”
“Am not!”
“Am too!”
“My stomach doesn’t feel so good. I think I’m going to...”
“I have to go to the bathroom, again—REALLY BAD!!”
“Are we there yet, Daddy, are we there yet?”...
So Africans and Arabs could drive here...?
What could POSSIBLY go wrong?
Granted. So keeping them dirt just in case? There are plenty of pictures on the web showing large transport trucks mired in mud trying to deliver supplies to outlying towns; pictures of traffic jams in mud ....
Get a job plowing/salting that highway. Guaranteed steady work with great benefits, especially when they start putting up toll booths (you know they will).
“Hey kid! Does this handkerchief smell like chloroform to you?”
driving time 208 hours on a good day
that is a full years driving for the average car
Red China is all for it.
Tanks, but no tanks!
I watched a show where they drove across Siberia (and Mongolia, and some of the ‘stans), and some of the highways are truly nightmarish. It was a real adventure.
A modern highway Moscow to Anchorage would be a game changer.
Will they get permission first?
10 trillion
30 year amortization
EZ terms....
Imagine the pot holes. They won’t be needing any more meteorites out there.
Will it ever get built? More importantly, why would it ever get built? @ 65 MPH that's 200 hours. Each way.
Yes, you could drive from New York to London. Alternatively, you could fly from New York to London, take a month vacation, and fly back. Even flying first class, flying would probably be cheaper.
