As they plunged towards their deaths, one of the last things seen by passengers and cabin crew near the front of the Germanwings Airbus A320 was their captain, Patrick Sonderheimer, desperately trying to smash down the door of the cockpit.

For several minutes on Tuesday morning the airliner had been inexplicably descending from cruising altitude towards the Alps with its engines idle.

Then get ALL of the men on board to form a battering ram. That door will not be able to withstand that kind of force!

My ex-wife could nag that damn door open in about 3 minutes flat.

Must be near the cockpit door and probably in a locked compartment that only the crew, and possibly only the captain, have access to............

I'll bet money the only Axe normally kept on a commercial plane is in the cockpit.

I remember when the TSA crap started, they took a pair of nail clippers away from a pilot. He made a public write up about the issue, saying he is required to have an axe strapped to his seat but they don't trust him with nail clippers?

Form a line single file. With enough speed and mass you can take the door down.

8 minutes is not a long tie to gather up a group of freaked out passengers

“The Federal Aviation Administration has mandated that cockpit doors be able to withstand small arms fire or explosive devices, such as grenades. That is in addition to being sturdy enough to prevent a powerful man from kicking the door open.”

I would imagine the European airlines have similar, if not the same, guidelines. A gang of guys was not going to get that door open.

No. That has not been determined at all. People are leaping before looking because crazy Jim Hoft is telling them to.

Seriously, for what other "safety" reason would you need an axe on an airplane?

You do realize that in a hard landing most of the doors will not open?

“Did he take the axe with him to the bathroom?”

As the great Rachel Jeantel would say: “I don’t know nothin about that, but you can axe me anything you want!”

and

“That would be retarted, sir!”

“...sturdy enough to prevent a powerful man from kicking the door open.”

Mentions only one man, not multiple men. I’m sure 50 guys form ing a battering ram running at 10 mph is going to take down the door.

50 x 175 lbs. is 8,750 lbs. Multiply that number by the kinetic force and that door will come down very easily.

They don’t design those doors to be impenetrable.

And won't a ROPer yell Allah Akbar? Isn't that part of the deal to get the 72 virgins?

My big worry is, would the authorities cover that up? I don't put it past them. Any of them.

If the captain tells all the guys on board they can either form a battering ram and take out the door or die in a crash how fast do you think those guys would cooperate to make it happen?

Part of the feeding-frenzy has been fueled by hastily posted (and even more hastily removed) Farcebook pages by muzzies suggesting that he was a convert and now praising him as a martyr.

The guy on point would get squashed wouldn't he?
