Stop Defending Phil Robertson — You’re Embarrassing Yourself
National Review ^ | 03/26/2015 | Katherine Timpf

Posted on 03/26/2015 3:03:02 PM PDT by SeekAndFind

Phil Robertson is an embarrassment, not a hero, and the socially conservative movement needs to distance itself from him immediately.

Don’t get me wrong — I agree that our culture is experiencing a terrifying shift towards censorship. People have become so easily offended that it’s almost impossible to say anything without someone getting upset about it; and concepts like trigger warnings, safe spaces, and microaggressions are threatening free speech.

But none of this changes the fact that Phil Robertson is an ignorant buffoon, and that many of his comments — despite the fact that he does have every right to make them — are not ones that anyone should ever want to be associated with.

Now, before you start composing your hate mail — think about it. Do you really want a dude who is going to publicly ruminate about the gruesome rape, murder, and castration of a man and his “little atheist wife and two little atheist daughters” to be an official face of your #brand?

And he is an official face. He spoke at this year’s CPAC, where he also received a free-speech award named after conservative legend Andrew Breitbart. As for his most recent controversial comments, he made them during a speech at a prayer breakfast, and the very fact that he was given the role of “speaker” suggests that he’s viewed as a model of the Christian faith. He’s an icon — but why?

After all, let’s be honest: His detailed hypothetical about the brutal rape, murder, and castration of an atheist family was disturbing, and his underlying point that only a Christian could understand why these activities were wrong was ignorant. It provided anyone who might accuse Christians of being intolerant with about the best piece of ammo that I can imagine.

So, Team Robertson — when people meet you and you tell them you’re a Christian, are these comments ones that you would want them to ascribe to your belief system? If not, say so! And if yes, well, good luck out there.

What’s embarrassing is reporters from National Review calling themselves “Conservative.”

The problem is who defines “Christian”, and how.

And who calls themself one.

You talk about a publication going off the deep end.

The Apostle John ( the disciple Jesus loved ) wrote:

3 We know that we have come to know him if we keep his commands. 4 Whoever says, “I know him,” but does not do what he commands is a liar, and the truth is not in that person. 5 But if anyone obeys his word, love for God[a] is truly made complete in them. This is how we know we are in him: 6 Whoever claims to live in him must live as Jesus did. ( 1 John 2:3-5, NIV ).

If John’s epistle means squat, then anyone can call himself Christian.

How so?

He says only those that keep the commandments know him. Only those that walk as he walked.

That is a very exclusive group, that excludes most that call themselves “Christian.”

I’m waiting for National Review to explain why Jason Lee Steorts is an acceptable conservative and Mark Steyn is not.

Because Jason Lee Steorts is an emasculated Harvard-educated girly-man and Mark Steyn is not.

and the disciples were first called Christians at Antioch.” (Acts 11:23-26).

My point is that non-believers define Christian, using their requirements (tolerate everyone, give all to the poor, social justice, etc.) and want to hold me to that standard.

Who / What in the hell is a Katherine Timpf and why should any thinking person give a rats ass what she does, says, writes or thinks ?

It's obvious that Timpf doesn't have adequate training and supervision.

RE: He says only those that keep the commandments know him. Only those that walk as he walked.

I don’t think he means keep his commandments PERFECTLY.

If that were so then NO ONE can call themselves Christian.

The late Pastor Adrian Rogers explains it by saying that the understanding is in the word “keep”.

Which means a true Christian keeps his commandments in the same way a sailor “keeps the stars” ( old way of saying ) and uses them to STIR them to the right direction and uses the stars as their guide in life. It doesn’t mean that in moments of carelessness they could not turn their eyes away from the stars and get blown off course. But a sailor will come back to the stars to go to his destination.

In the same way Christians might be blown off course by sometimes in moments of weakness, ignoring God’s commandments, but the PATTERN and TREND of a true Christian’s life will be the KEEP God’s commandments.

If a person sins callously without a tinge of conscience or repentance whatsoever and deliberately defends what is clearly against God’s word as right, there is reason to doubt that he knows Jesus Christ.

SEE FOR INSTANCE: The Presbyterian Church (USA), which recently sanctioned gay marriage and ordained a gay couple (Lesbians) to be pastors

I would stand with Phil Robertson until death. He is my brother in Christ, and would defend him in any way necessary. This little atheist twit would never get that.

But Yeshua didn’t “tolerate” anyone.

He simply spoke the Father’s will, and those that loved it followed him, while those that didn’t turned away.
