HERMOSILLO, Mexico (AP) — A young Mexican who urgently needs a heart and liver transplant has twice been denied a U.S. visa to go to the Mayo Clinic for treatment, he and his family said Wednesday.

Jose Chua Lopez, 20, was born with a heart defect and could die if he doesn’t receive the transplants, said his mother, Myra Lopez Martinez.

“My world has fallen down,” Chua said. “This needs to be fixed quickly.”

Cue snide comment from Dr. House.

Mexicans treat visitors in their country very badly. My husbands uncle had a heart attack in Cozumel and died. His body was tossed into an ice house and the family had to pay off everyone in the local government to get his body released to bring it home for burial. It took over a week to get him home and cost a bundle of cash. Everyone had their hand out.

I don’t have much sympathy for a country that does that to a visitor.

To be fair, that’s how Mexicans treat each other, too.

A friend of mine needs a double lung transplant. Has never smoked. She has been waiting years. She is always either too sick or not sick enough. If she wants to be on a list other than the one she is, she will have to move, all on her own dime. Every couple of months, she has to drive about 7 hours one way to be checked. I do not want someone from another country to bump her down the list....again. Strange thing is, the one she was looking at relocating for was the Mayo clinic in MN, I believe.

We should throw the doors open for anyone who needs a free transplant anywhere on Earth.

Except actual US citizens, though. They need to pay through the nose so foreigners can be treated free.

I guess it would be dumb for me to ask why he doesn’t go talk to the government of Mexico and the Mexican El Presidente about getting fixed up.

For the life of me I can’t understand why anyone would expose themselves to the corruption that is Mexico. When car insurance companies will cover you in Canada but not in Mexico, it speaks volumes...

Hmmmm, Chua must have expressed his interest in entering the U.S. legally and becoming a citizen.

He should sneak across the border and commit armed robbery, Obama would grant him amnesty at once.

In all honesty, your friend probably should move. First, because she’ll have to move anyway. Once you are on the list, they want you within a few hours (usually fewer than 4) from the transplant facility.
The US is broken up into transplant zones. Each zone has its own transplant acquisition teams, who work for hospitals. Some areas fund acquisition teams in much higher numbers than other areas. When Steve Jobs needed a liver, a friend of ours did, too. Jobs could afford to be on multiple lists in multiple zones because he had the time and money to get to them, go through the approval process, and commit to never being more than a few hours from the hospitals - he had a jet.
He got his liver before our friend, though our friend eventually got one, too.
They ended up both getting their organs from the same area.
Moving to an area with many acquisition teams is a really good idea if it is at all possible. It absolutely affects outcome.
It has been a while, but the last time I looked, Florida had one of the highest rates of procurement teams, and the Boston area was really low.

I'm with you. We'll dispatch medical professionals to Ebola ravaged Nations yet this kid is right across our border. On the other hand, his mother's sense of entitlement irks me. It's one thing to make an impassioned plea, it's another thing to make demands.

Some very good Dutch friends of mine lived in the US for over 20 years were transferred to Mexico. They liked it there so when he retired they bought a house there. They have given up inviting me to visit them I am not going there we went to Mexico for years on vacation trips but not after Uncle Jacks tragedy and a couple of other scary things that happened to us

I understand; I wouldn’t be thrilled to visit Mexico (especially now, as it is even more unstable).

Nobody in the media ever considers demanding Mexico pay for these treatments

Yes, just as nobody in the media expects certain groups here in this country to pay for anything at all.
