Good point. I once had someone locked in a room that only was protected with drywall. They felt real silly when I punched through to let them out.

...”You can hear he is trying to smash the door down”..

Ever since 9/11 doors are designed so they cannot be broken down. I forgot what the guy on Fox said...but the pilot would not have been able to break it down for what it’s made of now and designed.

“Why would one pilot leave the cockpit 40 minutes into the flight?”

Because the bar he was at didn’t have one?? (*ducking*)

This is a bit off topic but it is really sad for our wheelchair friends: many otherwise potty trained people have to wear diapers or, more likely, catheterize themselves when they fly, because the on board bathrooms are too small. I find this inexcusable. My own father has to sit in his dirty diaper when he flies because he needs an aide to change him and there is no room for two in these bathrooms. Forget the Mile High Club — this is an atrocity that people like our beloved JimRob here cannot fly comfortably.

In my mind I already solved the problem. Have the furthest rear restrooms face each other in the galley (like many do) and have some fold away doors that can, for a disabled passenger, seal the two bathrooms into one larger room, so that people can use them with an aide, or be able to be helped to the toilet if lower body disability. You would have two normal small bathrooms all the time until someone disabled needed a turn.

Any AA (American Airlines) frequent flyers here on FR know if this is true? I have heard from AA flyers that if one of the 2 pilots steps out of the cockpit for the restroom, etc., a flight attendant steps into the cockpit & leaves a service cart behind to block the aisle while they are in there. Pilot comes back, knocks, gets observed by the FA thru the cockpit peep hole & gets let back in. This eliminates the 1 pilot by himself point of failure (heart attack, shenanigans, etc., etc.). Anyone see that procedure on any of their flights?

She was just being smart this early on into the investigation....she knows people are thinking this might be terrorism....leaving out the obvious was obviously drawing attention in it’s own right.

According to the FAA accident investigator on Fox, that's required in the US (all airlines), but not in Europe.

People I know who have difficulties hire a private plane for state wise traveling....being handicapped in one form or another you just have to adjust as you can....and it's often more costly but does seem to go with the territory.

Unfortunately there are limits to accommodating people who have body issues that prevent them a comfortable ride....sometimes it's the size of the people who might otherwise be able to help that takes up the room where people might otherwise have the assistance needed. That' goes for those assisting as well.

When planes start making accommodations for some people then the others demand likewise for their particular needs...it becomes a circus and nobody is happy. People already complain about the size of the pillows for crying out loud!

State wise there are 'options' for travel other than flying. Vans can be suited well for the handi-capped as well as trains etc. It might mean more planning and longer but workable.

Maybe the pilot doing the flying into the ground was singing this song.

Yes, sad. My wife's elderly mother wears adult diapers, especially when we take her from the assisted living facility for trips. Once in a while, there is a distinct odor when I assist her into our vehicle, as she cannot get in on her own, and I realize she soiled herself. I didn't think about what the situation is when flying; hope airlines make it more bearable in the future.

On CNN, they said the protocol was to bring a crew member in the cockpit while a pilot was out of his seat, and the remaining pilot had to don an oxygen mask during that absence, just in case .
