To defeat the extremists for good, Muslims must reject those aspects of their tradition that prompt some believers to resort to oppression and holy war

Islam already had a reformation and it yielded the Shia branch of Islam.

Egypt’s Sisi again calls for ‘religious revolution’
http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/3271082/posts

Sisi also called for countering “extremist” views and erroneous religious beliefs, adding that the Islamic value of tolerance must be promoted.

Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi again called on Sunday for a “religious revolution” against extremism within the Islamic world in an interview on a religious public radio station.

Speaking at Al-Azhar University, one of the world’s top center for Sunni learning, Sisi said, “I am addressing the religious scholars and clerics. We must take a long, hard look at the current situation.”

“It is inconceivable that the ideology we sanctify should make our entire nation a source of concern, danger, killing, and destruction all over the world,” he said.

“It has reached the point that [this ideology] is hostile to the entire world. Is it conceivable that 1.6 billion [Muslims] would kill the world’s population of seven billion, so that they could live [on their own]? This is inconceivable,” said Sisi according to MEM

Because everyone who disagrees with them must be murdered? That one there is enough for us.
Because islam is from the devil? That one there is for them.

Since Koran is from Allah itself, any “reformation” is heresy.

Islam is not capable of reformation.

The koran is written in such a way that they cannot remove one or two things without destroying the whole.

Islam needs to go the way of the religions that inspired Greek and roman mythology.

Observations from the Protestant Reformation.

The Reformation was not over the violent content of Catholicism. Even so, the passions stirred over issues of great consequence lead, at least in part, to wars lasting the better part of 2 centuries, and cultural friction to the present day, half a millennium later.

The violent faction of Islam is not going to recede from a fatwa, or series of fatwas. Even if an Islamic reformation were to occur (nothing on the horizon that I can see), look for things to get much, much, much more violent in the short to medium term, and for the whole thing to play out over centuries.

You beat me by 22 seconds.

But I grabbed a beer, went to the bathroom, answered the door, changed a flat tire, took a nap and ......

Sisi is an incredibly brave man. Many want to kill him just for suggesting changing Islam.
A reformation or revolution in thought is necessary.
I don’t think it can happen.
Too much of Mad Mo’s instructions would have to be excised from their book.

A nuclear powered tune up is what Islam needs.

Exactly. Allah dictated the Koran to Muhammad. One doesn't reform the word of allah.

It is an erroneous western construct to equate the koran w/the Bible. Others forget the Reformation was about reform of the church, not the Bible.

Who is going to volunteer to lead the reformation? (Remember the old story, “Belling the Cat”?)

Islam does have a provision for living with non-muslims.

It involves mandatory payment of a special “jizya” tax on the part only of the “dhimmi” who are the subjugated ones.

A restrospective analysis could be that the Western World has been in this relationship based on an escalated price of oil, since late 1973. Only the development of enhanced recovery of oil through fracking (developed by the “dhimmi”) has now changed this relationship.

There are things in the Christian Bible that were done before, but they have not been excised from it. They are simply not practiced any more. At one time in the past, they were practiced, but they are considered ... today ... no longer relevant!

I know that some people might consider the killing of homosexuals to be valid today ... but I don’t and most people don’t consider it valid, although someone could point to a part of the Bible that indicates that. I also don’t consider the stoning of women to be valid, but someone could point it out in the Bible.

Islam can do the same thing ... “by THEOLOGY” consider it no longer valid, even though it’s “there”.

Sisi said, “I am addressing the religious scholars and clerics. We must take a long, hard look at the current situation.”
++++
Sisi knows what he is talking about and has his finger right on the problem - the Islamic clerics. As long as they continue to teach the hardcore Sunni Wahhabi version of Islam then ISIS and the like are going to have no problem recruiting young men hungry for those 72 virgins.

What Sisi should do is to start rounding up the Egyptian clerics who disagree with his view and let them contemplate their navesl behind bars while they consider moderating their ideas about how Islamic beliefs should be taught.

The alternative is to ultimately stand by and watch the Jihadist Community run out of virgins as their young men die foolishly on the battlefield. The West is dormant right know but even we have our limits. And the Protector of the Jihadists will be gone on less than 2 years.

Reform has to come from within. Of course, utter destruction can and probably will eventually come from without. We're very unlikely to see reform from within when, hanging over every muslim's head, is the promise by the insane ones to murder in the most horrible way imaginable any muslim who attempts to reform the religion. Not to mention, his family, friends and associates will also very likely suffer greatly as a result of his apostasy (i.e., they will be murdered too, in many cases).

Oh, did I mention, they're all insane? Islam made them that way. After our descendants have lived under islam for a couple of generations (if we're foolish enough to allow such a thing), they'll all be insane, too.
