Asians beware - Top marks largely go to Asians. Bill de Blasio wants to change the exams
The Economist ^ | 14.Mar.2015 | Economist

Posted on 03/24/2015 10:00:53 PM PDT by Cronos

..New York has nine specialised high schools, of which eight admit students using the city’s Specialist High Schools Admissions Test (SHSAT). The education they offer rivals that of private schools that charge $40,000 a year. The high schools are free. The most popular, Stuyvesant, sends roughly 25% of its graduates to the Ivy League or other top colleges. The school’s unofficial mantra is “Sleep, study, socialise: pick two.” It admits 4% of test-takers, pickier than Harvard.

New York’s Democratic mayor, Bill de Blasio thinks the SHSAT favours parents who can afford tutors. He wants to “broaden” (ie, relax) the admissions criteria, to help poorer black and Hispanic families.

The SHSAT also faces a legal challenge. The NAACP, the country’s biggest civil-rights legal defence fund, joined others in 2012 to file a suit demanding changes in admissions procedures. New York City’s public schools, the suit claims, are among the most racially segregated in the country

... Asians make up more than 70% of pupils at Stuyvesant; blacks and Hispanics combined make up 3%, and falling. White pupils took 80% of places in 1970; now it is less than 25%.

Einstein was an idiot. He believed totally in socialism/marxism . now 99% of the people on this forum know socialism can never work. 90% of registered Republicans know socialism/marxis can never work. also most Americans know socialism can never work .that is the most obvious fact to anyone that only an idiot would believe socialism could work. government is unaccountable and for that reason alone government or socialism can never work. is Obama, Lois Lerner, the IRS , the FCC accountable to you or to the people. HELL NO. a private business is accountable as they have to compete against others to give you a good product or they go out of business. that is the difference betwween socialism and capitalism . iphone vs the IRS which one you think works? walmart vs the government schools ? and so on. toyota vs the EPA. etc.

Yes but universities pass them over.

They are traditionally not huge givers to the university.

The Asians get there through hard work.

Basically, what they do in asia

Maybe I misunderstood your comment but Firebrand isn't talking about "Asia", he's referring to American born Asian children whose parents are of Asian descent and living in the U.S.

And it's not only Asian children but Indian children too.......

One only has to look at all the various competitions such as the national spelling Bee and engineering competitions to see that the vast majority of the kids in these competitions are Asians and Indians......

In my opinion it's a cultural thing where the Asians and Indians and their close knit family structure put the education of their children foremost above all the other crap that is available to kids today......

Emphasis on "close knit family"...........

Why are American kids being punished — no admittance to American public schools — for wanting to live an American life in their own country?

American kids aren't being punished it's just that the American born Asian and Indian childrens' parents are more focused on education than all the other crap......

And for what it's worth, the children we are talking about here are likely second generation born Americans of parents born here of parents who immigrated here.......

So to answer your question "Why are American kids being punished", they're not........

The Chinese and Jews score higher on IQ tests because they have larger brains?

LOL (not laughing at you, just appreciate the absurdity)

What the hell have the Chinese invented?

They couldn’t even build an ICBM until Hillary and Bill Clinton sold them the technology in exchange for campaign contributions.

That article is seriously delusional.

There may be some genetic differences in brain size among the races but correlating brain size to IQ seems preposterous and certainly hasn’t been proven by the scientific method.

Again, socio-economic and cultural factors would be the Occams Razor explanation both from an American and International perspective.

LOL Ever hear the term "Chinese Fire Drill"?

If this Wiki article about the provenance of the phrase is accurate, it's testament to British incompetence:

The term goes back to the early 1900s, and is alleged to have originated when a ship run by British officers and a Chinese crew practiced a fire drill in the engine room. The bucket brigade drew water from the starboard side, took it to the engine room, and poured it onto the fire. A separate crew hauled the accumulated water to the main deck and heaved the water over the port side. The drill went according to plan until the orders became confused in translation. The bucket brigade began to draw the water from the starboard side, run over to the port side and then throw the water overboard, bypassing the engine room completely.[2]

American kids ARE being punished. If you elect to play baseball instead of taking a college course in fluid mechanics during the summer between ninth and tenth grade, you’re going to lose your slot in the smart school to the Chinese-style study camp prisoner.

America doesn’t educate its children that way, and yet somehow we’ve always produced the best and the brightest in science and technology. Why do we have to change our culture — which includes our school system — to reflect how foreigners want their children to be educated?

If the parents of 2nd generation Americans want to give up their kids’ childhoods and imprison them in foreign-style study camps, be my guest — at their own expense, in private schools.

No kid with excellent grades and test scores should be denied a slot in a public school because the bar was artificially and unnecessarily raised by parents who are gaming the system.

What the hell have the Chinese invented? They couldn’t even build an ICBM until Hillary and Bill Clinton sold them the technology in exchange for campaign contributions.

In antiquity, gunpowder, paper, silk, and any number of agricultural, architectural, engineering and industrial techniques. Don't confuse your lack of knowledge on this subject with reality. Until the Industrial Revolution 250 years ago, the Chinese and Western economies were not very different. And it was only after the Industrial Revolution that Western armies were able to defeat Chinese military units somewhat consistently, although the Korean War demonstrated the limits of superior technology against an intelligent and well-trained infantry force, given strategic constraints and modern rules of warfare.

As to ICBM's, the first ICBM the Chinese fielded was in 1981. The first Chinese ballistic missile was fielded in the 1960's. The Chinese did not copy US technology to make ballistic missiles - they copied Russian technology. And both the Russians and the US copied German technology, courtesy of scientists on permanent loan from Hitler. And at bottom, all rocket technology originates in gunpowder invented by the Chinese and used in primitive rocketry 1000 years ago.

So why did Chinese efforts not advance beyond that? The likelihood is that in antiquity, Chinese rulers and grandees have always placed a high importance on funding engineering research, and none at all on basic science and math research. A Finnish commentator suggests that Western rulers have in the past, been unique in their sponsorship of subjects their rulers could not understand even if explained to them:

That is art and art is often at its height in tyrannical and radically fractured societies that have some cultural competition going on. Science isn’t. Even mathematics requires political stability and infrastructure because mathematicians are people, people need to eat and funding mathematicians is not a high priority for most societies. Art that pleases the tyrant on the other hand will get funded even if the peasants are starving.

The big achievement of the West is not some magically higher number of geniuses, it’s the culture of cultivation of geniuses. Godfrey Hardy used to say that discovering Ramanujan was his biggest achievement in mathematics. If he hadn’t dragged the guy out of India no one would know about his work. Hardy himself used to say that he didn’t want to do any “useful”, applied work because it could be used for war.

In England, these guys could get paid to work on their “useless” number theory which actually has found a lot of use and Hardy would probably be disappointed by how much of his innocent number theory is now used in cryptography and war. In just about any other society Ramanujan would have been dismissed as a freak and Hardy would have been considered useless. The culture that tolerates and supports an academic subculture that produces nothing that the rulers can even understand, that is a rare achievement.

As to being delusional, what did Jews invent prior to the Industrial Revolution? What great civilization did they found? Where are the continent-wide relics of their great civilization? Where were the Hebraic contributions to math, science and so on before the last couple of centuries?

If he can't keep up, it's not his slot. The best and brightest weren't educated - they educated themselves. By reading (or if you prefer, studying). Geniuses aren't Renaissance men - they're monomaniacs. Ask Bill Gates how much baseball he played. Heck, read his biography sometime. In fact, read the biographies of any of the major science and technology figures. Talented as they are, they are nonetheless focused on their areas of expertise to the exclusion of everything else. Goddard was just the tip of the iceberg.

Here's what an almost "surplus young man", who married late* in life (in his late 30's or late 40's), did when his life was threatened by the regime:
Liu Bang initially served as a minor patrol officer in his hometown, Pei County (in present-day Xuzhou, Jiangsu), under the Qin dynasty. Sometime in the 210s or 200s BC, he rebelled against the Qin government by releasing a group of convicts he was escorting to Mount Li to construct Qin Shi Huang's mausoleum, after which he and his followers became outlaws and took shelter on Mount Mangdang. In 208 BC, when rebellions erupted throughout China to overthrow the Qin Empire, Liu Bang formed his own army and participated in the insurrection. He styled himself "Duke of Pei" and emerged as one of the most prominent rebel leaders after taking control of Pei County and some adjacent counties. After the fall of Qin in 206 BC, Xiang Yu, the de facto chief of the rebel forces, divided the former Qin Empire into the Eighteen Kingdoms. He declared himself the king of Western Chu and appointed 17 former rebel leaders – including Liu Bang – as the rulers of the other kingdoms. Liu Bang became the "King of Han" and was given a domain in the remote Bashu region (parts of present-day Sichuan). Later that year, Liu Bang led his forces out of Bashu and attacked and conquered the Three Qins, three of the Eighteen Kingdoms which were nearest to his domain.
* Late because the average lifespan in antiquity was 40+ years of age, which is why most men and women married in their mid-teens. Men who married late in life were usually individuals who could not afford the bride price. In this "surplus young man's" case, it's likely he never did come up with the money.

If you elect to play baseball instead of taking a college course in fluid mechanics

If that's the case, which it isn't, then that's your choice.........

That's a ridiculous and unsubstantiated argument and you know it! The Asian and Indian kids are excelling in their classes due to parental involvement and a demand for education, it has nothing to do with taking courses in "fluid mechanics" during the summer...........

Open your eyes dude, the only kids who aren't excelling scholastically are those whose parents are willing to accept mediocrity from their kids..........

These people make up stuff they never bothered to research. Blue Ink talked about how the US education system produced the steam engine (invented in England). Even the inventor of the American variant was self-taught, from books borrowed or purchased. Schools are factories that produce worker bees. Geniuses teach themselves, from books on loan from the library. Mere teachers can't keep up with them.

If I had to guess why China failed to keep up, I'd posit the explanation that, in addition to the lack of financial backing for eccentrics who chose theoretical math and science as their pursuits in life, their thinkers thought exclusively in engineering terms - they lacked the language of theoretical math and science in much the same way that ancient Britons lacked a script with which to record, analyze and synthesize new thoughts, and draw on the wisdom of those who came before them:

As Toby E. Huff notes, pre-modern Chinese science developed precariously without solid scientific theory, while there was a lacking of consistent systemic treatment in comparison to contemporaneous European works such as the Concordance and Discordant Canons by Gratian of Bologna (fl. 12th century).[40] This drawback to Chinese science was lamented even by the mathematician Yang Hui (1238–1298), who criticized earlier mathematicians such as Li Chunfeng (602–670) who were content with using methods without working out their theoretical origins or principle, stating:

The men of old changed the name of their methods from problem to problem, so that as no specific explanation was given, there is no way of telling their theoretical origin or basis.

Even after Britons adopted the Roman script, it took a thousand years before Britain could be said to have decisively overtaken the successors to Rome (i.e. the Italian principalities). The speed of transmission of people, goods and knowledge in the modern era is why China has overtaken half the countries in the world in the economic sphere (i.e. in per capita income terms), from its near-rock bottom position 36 yeas ago.

Only time will tell if China will become a scientific pioneer in the years ahead. Japan has caught up with Western economies without any earth-shaking new discoveries. In fact, the US hasn't had any earth-shaking new discoveries in a while. Where are the Jetson-age personal airplanes and helicopters every household was supposed to be piloting by now? Weren't we supposed to have colonized and terraformed the Moon and Mars decades ago? What happened to the plans for inter-galactic space travel?

You talk about “choice,” but no parent should have to choose to put their kid in one of these horrible study camps, or else get shut out of a first-tier high school or college.

Foreign students, many of them Chinese nationals, are admitted in droves to the University of California, while Americans are increasingly being excluded. The UC wants foreign students because they can charge them four times the tuition that Californians pay.

So now the average GPA for UCLA admission is 4.3. When I was coming up, a 4.3 wasn’t even mathematically possible. 4.0 was perfect. But now you spend your childhood in a study camp and take a college course, which is factored in to your high school GPA — now you’re better than perfect. And that 4.3 is the smokescreen that allows the UC to falsely claim that a foreign student is smarter and more deserving of admission than the kid with the 3.9 who played sports, went to the prom, and didn’t take college courses in high school.

My parents didn’t “accept mediocrity” from me — I graduated with honors from the UC. And yet if I applied today, I would have no chance of admission. So what’s changed? Chinese-style study camp prisoners get the slots in the universities that my parents’ and grandparents’ taxes built and paid for.

I’m not going to accept being called a racist (not that you called me a racist, but others on this thread have), when this is about culture, not skin color. And I’m not going to shrug at the destruction of American life — no more football or cheerleading, kids, if you wanna go to UCLA — that this sick style of schooling wreaks.

Many of the parents pushing these study camps are American, and parents of American children. That doesn’t change the fact that they’re trying to import a foreign schooling culture to America. And it’s a cheap tactic to wolf-cry “Racist!” when other parents express that they don’t want a foreign style of schooling here, or their kids to have to compete with the victims of it.

These study-camp parents are willing to do what sane parents aren’t — steal their kids’ childhoods. Why are we rewarding that behavior with all the seats at our best schools?

Democrats also proposed quotas on Asians being admitted to UC Berkeley. That blew up in their faces.
