Two years after she underwent a double mastectomy to cut her cancer risk, actress and U.N. envoy Angelina Jolie has had surgery to remove her ovaries and fallopian tubes for the same reason, she wrote in The New York Times on Tuesday.
Jolie, 39, carries a mutation of the BRCA1 gene, which sharply increases her risk of developing breast cancer and ovarian cancer. Her mother was diagnosed with the latter at age 49 and died seven years later.
In her New York Times op-ed Tuesday, Jolie said she had been planning the latest preventive surgery for some time.

But she is a hypocrite. I've watched her in an interview with that bearded weirdo, where she felt she could be more honest, and she revealed what a total slut she was. I believe she used the actual term "nymphomaniac" to describe her proclivities.
If she was really averse to true risk, she would renounce her former, and probably present, risky lifestyle, which probably includes a slew of risky hormone-laden "birth control" drugs.
The problem with “you gotta do what you gotta do” is that this “gotta do” changes with the times in a cyclical fashion.
There are smokers, now and in the past, who have not died from it. There are also those on the other side of the coin who NEVER touched anything anyone even remotely connected to it. Genetics? I really don’t know.
But I do know there is an illogical mania out there where how you feel and respond to society’s perception of cancer as a death agent is the most important thing. Given the right circumstances it can completely take over one’s life to the point where the “it” of it is all that matters.

I do not believe it lowers the body's OVERALL odds of being afflicted by cancer.
If you have a genetic propensity to get cancer then removing parts of your body only lowers the number of organs that maybe be affected. I do not believe it lowers the OVERALL odds of an individual who is genetically predisposed..
She has already had her breats removed and replaced using this mentality..

Some of the medical tests can be invasive. How many surgical biopsies, x-rays, cat scans and anesthesia-related medical tests etc. are considered safe or may possibly trigger other problems?
I have no doubt this was a difficult choice for her to make. Her physical being will be permanently altered - but she will be able to continue her life without that specific fear/anxiety hampering her lifestyle any further.
In my own family, we've had to make similar decisions with regard to prostate cancer - PSA tests swinging unpredicatbly for years... and ovarian cysts persistently recurring. "Watch & wait" worked for a few years in both instances...and then the anxiety roller coaster tipped the decision(s) into final resolution of each problem.
I pray for her and any individual making similar life altering decisions a safe and healthy result/outcome to their very personal decision.

and as I said, if the laudatory writ encourages someone to have a pap smear or mammogram who had otherwise put it off, then why gripe about it. it’s petty. my sisterinlaw died of breast cancer at a relatively young age leaving behind a daughter. she went every two years for mammograms, but her cancer was aggressive and fast growing. had she had the foreknowledge, perhaps she would have chosen to do this procedure and perhaps prolonged her life or even saved it.
Why do we need to know everything about the lives of Hollywood types?

We don’t need to know every little thing about the lives of “the rich & famous”.
And if someone doesn’t listen top their doc, I doubt this will motivate them either.
Very few men were motivated by Lance Armstrong and his cancer event.
I am perplexed by the mockery and criticism as well. Obviously she is the one who will have to live with the consequences of these surgeries and I DON”T think that she undertook any of this lightly. She isn’t a dimwit. Yes, she was odd and wild in her youth, but I think she has done a lot of good as well. If I am not mistaken her father is Jon Voight.

I wish she would reconcile with her father but she wont forgive him for once calling her what she is: emotionally disturbed
but! if she choose to collect kids and use her money raising them, and engage in international relief tourism as another hobby, then it beats the spending idiocy of much of the rest of the Hollywood crowd!

Well, her mother died young of ovarian cancer, her grandmother did, and she has six young children. I’m not opposed to what she did.

Death by ovarian cancer is a frightening thing. Angelina influences people and talking about this may very well save lives. She is brave to have one it and brave to discuss it.
The sister of a co-worker died from ovarian cancer specifically she was afraid of surgery. And I have known various women who have died of breast cancer. If you have this gene this is what you’re facing unless you take preventative action.
I admire Angelina.
because believe it or not what they do makes news and affects the level of knowledge and awareness of other ordinary people, and this episode will raise discussion about ovarian caner and may save another woman’s life
Because her actions out of fright lessen the reality of others and what they deal with.
She doesn’t have cancer, and while one’s “odds” of getting cancer may be stated as “87%” due to certain markers, that number tends to be misleading.
My mother in law, cancer four times, tests said no real chance existed.
And others can have “markers” and never develop cancer.
This really is like dumping a car because “something” that may not even happen.
I myself have a ‘risk’ of cancer and heart attack.
I’m not rushing out to have things removed on the offhand chance it “might” prolong my life.
(Or it might not.)
oh well, we disagree. you are intent on disparaging her for this and I think your criticism of her is petty. there are plenty of people who do not even GO to the dr for checkups. I guess no PSAs either, bc why in the world would THAT motivate someone? RME.
