School achieves huge bump in graduation rate by just passing everyone

Looks like somebody may have finally come up with a better system than Common Core. John Dewey High School in Brooklyn, New York was having a lot of trouble with their numbers.

Not enough students were graduating, and that’s bad for business. But rather than messing around with the tedious business of trying to motivate the students and their parents or examine how effective the teachers actually are, they clearly had one of those, wow, I could have had a V-8 moments. In 2009 they were only graduating 56% of their students. But by 2013 – just five short years later – they had boosted that number up to 74%. That’s some incredible progress! But how did they do it?

As it turns out, you can get the graduation numbers up far more efficiently if you just give almost everyone a passing grade.

Teaching kids takes so much effort, staffers at John Dewey HS in Brooklyn have found a quicker way to fix persistent failure rates, sources said: Just let them pass.

Investigators are probing accusations of a massive grade-fixing scheme by educators desperate to boost the graduation rate at Dewey, The Post has learned. Multiple sources claim Dewey is cutting corners by passing kids with the help of a shady “credit recovery” program that students sarcastically call “Easy Pass.”

The system allows failing pupils to get passing grades by playing games, doing work online or taking abbreviated programs that critics argue lack academic rigor.

There were also blended “Project Graduation” courses, where kids were given an opportunity to earn credit for a variety of subjects. But teachers were stunned when students who failed to pass those courses ended up on the graduation rolls anyway after assistant principals and department changed their grades, sources said.

Will “passing everybody” also be applied to the drivers’ test given by DMV?

Then they’re shocked a few years later when they find employers aren’t hiring anyone from John Dewey HS.

Driving in and around Austin, you'd think that was the case already.

By not expecting someone to put out the effort to succeed they guarantee the recipients of these fake diplomas will fail in life.

I am not sure if this is not on purpose (or just a way to take the heat off the unionize teachers)or just a win win for the left.

If I recollect, John Dewey HS was established in the early 70’s, and had NO grades, as an experimental school. Color me surprised they have grades, with which to pass everybody with.

Awesome! Sounds like a solution to the kludgy unemployment numbers too! Just “give” everyone a “job”! Not enough demoncrat voters? Invite third world losers to invade with the bribe of all kinds of free stuff! Don’t forget to include disenfranchised muzzies who just need “jobs”! Pesky ID cards creating issues? Don’t require them! Annoying rules and regs stopping the march to dictatorship? Ignore them!

Humanity bashed its collective head on the Peter Principal sometime ago and seemingly has no where to go but down. Way down. Back to barbarianism we go. Nobody cares.

Probably lots of extra-credit book reports?

My wife isn’t allowed to give students a zero for poor or nonexistent work, and isn’t allowed to give retarded or otherwise learning disabled anything less than a 50. Her administrators say it is too difficult for them to pass once they have received these low grades. I always mocked this by saying if you are giving away grades, why not just hand them a diploma and save the trouble of teaching them.

This school has just taken the public education grading farce to the next logical step.

It's not just local to that school. Trust me.

As a retired teacher I have seen guidance counselors lobby hard for revised grades (failing to passing or lower to higher to raise GPA). The rational was usually "He/she tried really hard" followed by some sob story about economic or social disadvantage .

I have also seen administrators modify grades without informing the reporting teacher first. The funny thing there was that our online gradebooks allowed us to go back and re-enter the correct grade. If we did that, the administrators would back off.

It wasn't in New York, it was in Arizona. My brother and sister-in-law are both teachers and it is the same, for them, in Oklahoma.

That will always be the case if graduation rates are a metric for school district evaluation.

Mears:" In other words, the diploma is a meaningless piece of paper.
Terrific.

Social progression,; it's the Socialist way
Imagine a plumber who can't understand math or fractions ,
Imagine a secretary who types (a la facebook/tweet):
"We th pepl, do estblsh a mor prfct unon..."
That's social progression, and a graduation from Dewey High school.
That's a 'no brainer' ..

Here in Florida we has FCAT tests that students must pass in order to graduate middle school and then High School. It was instituted back in the 90’s when my daughter was in middle school. I told one of her teachers then that what would happen is the teachers would wind up teaching the tests in order to get their own evals up. That’s exactly what has happened..........

Another thing is imagine the kids who really worked hard at Dewey and actually learned something.

Their hard work means nothing as word gets out that the Dewey diplomas are meaningless.
