CHICAGO Mayor Rahm Emanuel had just finished the quintessential municipal politics photo op, briefly inspecting a dusty street-paving project on a block of the South Side lined with tidy brick bungalows.
As his opponent, Jesus G. Garcia, along with supporters in labor and the left, tried to paint Mr. Emanuel as the candidate of the 1 percent, the mayor made sure to banter with hard-hatted city workers on this Tuesday afternoon before making his way to a waiting sport utility vehicle. But when a reporter asked him about a labor leaders accusation that he is too sympathetic to corporations, the mayors playfulness gave way to an icy glare.
What corporate children were getting a half-day of kindergarten? Mr. Emanuel shot back, referring to one of his first terms signature accomplishments: the expansion of kindergarten to a full day in all of the citys public schools.
Mr. Emanuel faces a surprisingly competitive runoff election on April 7 against Mr. Garcia, a Democratic county commissioner, in a campaign that is about many things: Mr. Emanuels brusque personality, Chicagos balkanized racial politics, competing visions of public education and how to handle the troubled state of municipal finances.

Isn’t it liberal to elect a Hispanic?
Tougher gun laws, pandering to unions, rich not paying fair share, yata, yata , yata.
Of course, that’s how you fix problems caused by liberalism - even more and faster liberalism.
One man's "gorgeous mosaic" is another man's "balkanized racial politics."
These antiquated white liberal dinosaurs of the past had better recognize. The very constituencies they worked so feverishly to usher them into power will one day oust them because they are “not like themselves”.
Once the tipping point is reached what in the hell doe they need with a liberal Trilobite?
I caught one of Rahm’s commercials and it was only a few degrees off of what would be aimed at a Tea Party audience. But yeah its all a lie, but then again no one ever asks if any liberalism is a success.
Rahm or Jesus ,Hmmmm
Hopefully they'll choose wisely.
Wait. How do you choose wisely between two control freaks?
He’s definitely scared then. So scared he’s willing to try and convince any conservatives still left there that he is the lesser of two evils.
Why not? There are countless clueless “lesser of two evils” on our side. It’s worked for the last two elections, hasn’t it?
So...basically it’s a test to see who can fail faster.
No, wrong assumption by the writer. This is the beginning of the Hispanic dominance and takeover of the Democratic Party. All those White liberals who were bragging about the demographic advantage the Democrats have with the Hispanic vote are about to get their comeuppance. Hispanics are not taking a back seat to Blacks or Whites anymore. They are taking over the party, and I all I can say to our liberal friends is how do you like the idea of amnesty now. You wanted it to destroy the GOP but you’re going to destroy yourselves as well.
“Tougher gun laws, pandering to unions, rich not paying fair share, yata, yata , yata.”
Yeah, Chicago is one place that the GOP does well to stay completely away from. The only time a Republican should run there is after it’s become the nation’s “Second Detroit,” and even then, it would probably be a fool’s mission.
Chicago is now and always has been the home town of American Marxism.
>>Isnt it liberal to elect a Hispanic?<<
As of Zimmerman, a Latino who a liberal doesn’t like or needs to defeat is now “white.”
Chicago fast becoming the Caracas of the USA. Has Garcia been a bus driver in the past?
Stock up on toilet paper, eheehe. Or move to Wisconsin.
Go Chuy! Chicago will not be fixed until it experiences and faces up to the causes of its inevitable disaster. And Rahm losing warms the cockles of my heart.
Emmanuel is the CONSERVATIVE in this race?
Chicago is lost.
This.
Don’t know about that, Chicago was once a free market mecca. Chicago was the first truly American mega city.
