In New Hampshire, Scott Walker lays out three pillars of potential presidential platform

CONCORD, N.H. — Gov. Scott Walker introduced himself to New Hampshire Republicans here Saturday, outlining a three-pronged potential presidential theme focused on growth, reform and safety — and later called suggestions that he’s aggressively shifted policy positions in recent months “ridiculous.”

Walker talked about cutting federal income tax rates to spur economic growth, returning control of education and transportation spending to the states and framing the threat posed by radical Islamic terrorism not as one of national security, but of the closer-to-home domestic theme of “safety.”

Nice guy, but not even close to a President Ted Cruz.

“Nice guy, but not even close to a President Ted Cruz”

Yet, a President Scott Walker is far more likely than a President Ted Cruz.

Cut spending first. Then cut revenue.

Nice guy, but not even close to a President Ted Cruz.

Cruz does not garner the support outside Texas like Walker does.

Cruz has no leadership credentials or accomplishments, like Walker does.

Cruz has not been thoroughly vetted by the left and media in the way Walker has.

Cruz is our Obama....a first-term Senator with a sparse track record (better than Obama's).

I love Cruz. But outside of red-meat conservatives, he has issues. The masses will reject a first-term Senator based on Obama. The masses want a proven, real leader, like a governor, because Obama was not a leader.

Like it or not, we need someone who can win the masses, not just conservatives. Walker can do both. He has fought the battles, talks eloquently, and is thoroughly vetted as a conservative.

And Walker doesn't?

I disagree. Cruz has become the defacto conservative leader in Washington. Have you even been watching him? I like Walker too, but Cruz is my choice to cut the nuts off the liberal malaise that has gripped this country.

“...he has issues.”

And one big issue is his wife. I don’t trust any CFRers.

What leadership credentials?

Leadership is not all about holding an executive office. Leadership is about having a larger vision and the will to accomplish it. Leadership is about communicating that vision and having others join in that vision. Cruz can hire many Walkers to implement his vision.

Accomplishments?

His key accomplishments are winning in a blue state and setting the public employee unions straight.

Chris Christie also won a couple of times in a blue state, and I think he attempted to straighten out the unions. But he did not have a legislature to support him. Does that mean I think Christie is great- not really.

Why? Because Walker is better at flip-flopping?

Because Walker has an executive-level background of significant accomplishments and has kicked liberals’ and union thugs’ asses three times in four years. Is he perfect to the point he meets the purity standards of some FReepers? Nope. Is he without fault? Nope. Is he electable across the wide range o voters needed to win a national election? Yep.

Don’t get me wrong.. This isn’t a slam against Cruz. I’d love to see him elected, and if he’s nominated, I will enthusiastically support him. The problem is his appeal is to a much narrower swath of the electorate, so his chances of becoming President are very slim. Walker is the most battle-tested conservative out there by far... Like Cruz, Walker not only battles the left mano a mano, but he relishes the opportunity.

I am going to chime in here that I think Cruz would be much more effective for conservatives by leading the Senate, than by running for president.

The presidency is not the only powerful position in Washington that needs filling by excellent people. Attorney General, and Cabinet positions, military and judgeships, All need quality people who are deeicated.

When someone ‘grows’ in the direction of becoming more conservative, that’s a good thing.

My ideas today are different than they were when I was in my twenties... different than when I was in my thirties. Situations change, understanding changes... That’s good - it’s the opposite of having a closed mind.

Besides the ‘you said this 22 years ago’ is a Chris Wallace ‘gotcha’ type question - and it’s boring. Tell me how he’s changed that you disagree with... and why you feel that way. Now that would be of interest.

Cruz isn't leading the Senate, McConnell is. And will be for the foreseeable future. As long as that is the case, Cruz is marginalized in the Senate...but would be the leader in the White House.

But the presidency is what set's the agenda and provides the vision. And makes the appointments.

Are your ideas different from what the were a month or a week ago? That's the complaint about Walker.

Both candidates face an uphill battle against Jeb or whoever the Republican hierarchy endorses. That candidate will get the bigger war chest and like it or not, money determines the nominee and ultimately, the winner. If we don't want another McCain or Romney, it will be up to us to press hard for a conservative candidate. We can't just whine and moan on an internet forum. We have to take action.

I think it would be nice if Conservatives all said: "Cruz and Walker are both acceptable to me. Let's see which one the country likes best."

Or we can spend our energy bad-mouthing one or the other and then all hail President Jeb.

___________

If a conservative took the White House, McConnell would not be leading the Senate, bank on it.
