Tom Cotton picked apart by Army general over ‘mutinous’ Iran letter
WASHINGTON POST ^ | 13 MARCH 2015 | JONATHAN CAPEHART

Posted on 03/13/2015 2:42:28 PM PDT by Extremely Extreme Extremist

The open letter to the leaders of the Islamic Republic of Iran signed by 47 senators and instigated by Sen. Tom Cotton (R-Ark.) was a stunning breach of protocol. One so outrageous that my former colleagues at the New York Daily News dubbed the signers “traitors.” While it is indeed a slap in the face of President Obama and an affront to the presidency, I’m not sure I would go that far, especially since Cotton is an Army veteran of the Iraq and Afghanistan wars. So, I turned to retired Major Gen. Paul D. Eaton for perspective. He wouldn’t say Cotton and Co. were “traitors,” either. He had a better word.

“I would use the word mutinous,” said Eaton, whose long career includes training Iraqi forces from 2003 to 2004. He is now a senior adviser to VoteVets.org. “I do not believe these senators were trying to sell out America. I do believe they defied the chain of command in what could be construed as an illegal act.” Eaton certainly had stern words for Cotton.

Sounds like the Maj Gen is trying to apply military standards to the Senators:

“... they defied the chain of command ...”

“... a gross breach of discipline ...”

Article author Capehart is stretching, trying to find someone to verbally assault Senator Cotton for ‘the letter’.

Where was Major Gen. Paul D. Eaton when John Kerry did this?

American Patriots Against John Kerry

The 1970 meeting that John Kerry conducted with North Vietnamese communists violated U.S. law, according to an author and researcher who has studied the issue.

Kerry met with representatives from “both delegations” of the Vietnamese (North Vietnamese and Viet Cong) in Paris in 1970, according to Kerry’s own testimony before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee on April 22, 1971. But Kerry’s meetings with the Vietnamese delegations were in direct violation of laws forbidding private citizens from negotiating with foreign powers, according to researcher and author Jerry Corsi, who began studying the anti-war movement in the early 1970s.

According to Corsi, Kerry violated U.S. code 18 U.S.C. 953. “A U.S. citizen cannot go abroad and negotiate with a foreign power,” Corsi told CNSNews.com.

By Kerry’s own admission, he met in 1970 with delegations from the North Vietnamese communist government and discussed how the Vietnam Warshould be stopped.

The good Ret Major General is associated with the “National Security Network” a rather biased source indeed. From their website.

“NSN concentrates on bridging the gaps in thought and action between both policy experts and policy makers, and Washington politics and the American public. NSN challenges misguided and overly-militarized conservative approaches to foreign policy through...”
..”.Building and Strengthening a progressive national security network: NSN offers sharp policy analysis, builds bridges, and distributes resources to help progressives – from Capitol Hill and national advocacy campaigns to local community groups – turn shared principles into smart, savvy national security postures.”

Thanks for the perspective that confirms what I already thought. Progressivism should be categorized as a medical condition because it surely causes blindness.

Of course Eaton is full of it.

And Cotton is tough as nails and one smart cookie.

My money’s on HIM.

He’s a big boy and he will weather the likes of an ignorant, big mouth such as Eaton.

” Major Gen. Paul D. Eaton , He is now a senior adviser to VoteVets.org. “

nough said ...Vote Vets is a patently Democrap/Obama oriented group , verging on anti-war organization . Linked at the hip with Code Pink , and stooges like this guy fail to realize that maybe a little mutiny IS in order at this point .

b/t/w Genr’l , how’d that training of Iraqi forces work out ?
They folded like a cheap suit when confronted by a small number of fanatics .

Surprised a former general doesn’t realize that the term “Mutiny” doesn’t apply because Sen. Cotton isn’t directly under Obama’s command.

Either that, or he’s just a partisan hack.

Does he think the legislature is subordinate to the president?

It might be good that the Maj Gen is retired. Were he still active duty, in the not so distant future, Cotton might be HIS boss.

[Cotton already has made an impression. There is a faction already looking to the near future where Cotton will likely be a presidential contender.]

This is the new Army, legitimate to question why those retained or promoted are retained or promoted. Senator Cotton did the right thing, seven Republicans didn’t. The general apparently knows who he needs to please.

Eaton is one of Obama’s ‘good’ (i e leftist) generals. He did good service in Iraq, but after Iraq, and retirement, he remarks have been in line with Obama. He also complained about Netanyahu’s speech.

Newsflash to the Jackass General: You took a with to uphold and Defend the Constitution.

Perhaps if you took remedial U.S. Government instead of gender studies you would have learned the part about co equal branches of Government. The Senate does not “Report to” the President nor are they in a chain of Command to the President! It says the Senate advises and consents.

Paul Eaton sounds like a pu$$y.

As for the New Yawk Daily News calling these senators “traitors”, let me know how it works out for you dumb ass New York liberals when one of those nuclear warheads is placed on top of an ICBM and is headed for Manhattan.
