Correct. If Menendez resigns and Christie doesn’t appoint Lonegan or Forbes to fill that seat, he’s finished in the party. My guess is that it will be Forbes.

Much has been overlooked by the administration, much will be overlooked. Senator Menendez was targeted as soon as the WH realized his dissent with O’s Iran policy was effective.
I bet the GOP “leadership” (big bitcher, little boner) and 90% of those on Capitol Hill and at least 1 member of SCOTUS are aware of certain files which could spell trouble if made public.

The governor makes an appointment to fill a U.S. Senate vacancy, and the appointee serves until the next regularly-scheduled, statewide general election. The person elected at that next regularly-held general election serves for the remainder of the unexpired term, if any. If the term was set to expire at that general election, the person elected serves a full six-year term.
But my guess is that Melendez will not step down willingly.
