When my wife was called to the school office because my son had a half centimeter by a half centimeter lego gun it should have been a clue we needed to home school. But it was the fact that he was falling behind even though we spent hours every night teaching him that made us home school.

He just got into a fight with his sister about who gets a advanced chemistry text book. That would never have happened in public school.

We have 4 children, 17,15,12, and 11. They have never been to a government indoctrination center (”public” school).

My children are taught how to think not what to think.

We had four kids go through the public school, and yes we were conflicted. My lovely wife tutored them all after school, we corrected much of the nonsense and not only monitored it, but countered it; they've turned out just fine.

That being said, with the gains in resources for parents, and the horrendous decline in the public schools, if we were parents of little ones now, we would choose to home school them. It's a no brainer. It's the far better choice for most who want to pass along goodness and truth to their children.

ANOTHER REASON TO HOMESCHOOL

This ping list is for the “other” articles of interest to homeschoolers about education and public school. This can occasionally be a fairly high volume list. Articles pinged to the Another Reason to Homeschool List will be given the keyword of ARTH. (If I remember. If I forget, please feel free to add it yourself)

The main Homeschool Ping List handles the homeschool-specific articles. I hold both the Homeschool Ping List and the Another Reason to Homeschool Ping list. Please freepmail me to let me know if you would like to be added to or removed from either list, or both.

Excellent post!
Oddly enough - as much of a leftist Blue-state hell-hole as Konnecticut is, they are just about the most home-school friendly state in the union.
They're trying to change that, with, so far, zero success - partly because there are a lot of secular liberals that also home-school here.

Home schooled our three children before it was popular and you were thought to be very odd if you even considered the possibility back in early 90's because I had two that were falling behind and I refused to let the schools label them.

One Associate Degree(accomplished during high-school years), three Bachelor Degrees, three Master Degrees, one Artist Diploma, one Master of Philosophy and a Doctorate started in the fall, they survived me not having a teaching diploma or for that matter finishing collage and they were not help back or told they were dumb.

Downside....I repeated "back to your work" or "go on to the next problem" after every single problem for two children for 12 years on good days, on bad ones I would have them run around the house after every problem to run off energy. Home schooling gave three people a chance to have exciting lives instead of being held down and put in a box and told they are failures creating failures.

After my 15yr old Granddaughter was bullied at school my Daughter pulled her out for home schooling. I bought the textbooks, but after a year it was obvious that my Daughter was not home schooling her in any way and my Grandaughter just fell into a do nothing gamehead mode with no parental supervision by either my Daughter or her stepfather. Well eventually a big family problem brewed up and I ended up bringing my Grandaughter to live with me and her Grandmother. In about 8 months with just some help and nudging she studied up and passed her GED tests and received her diploma at 16 yrs old. She went into the community college on her 17th birthday and today is in her last 2 months of her freshman year studying pre-nursing to get into the nursing school. By age 18 this summer, just after this semester she will have accumulated 25 credit hours of her Nursing pre-requisites, she already passed her certification tests and has her Nursing Assistant state certification. Public schools just don’t help the flounderers and lazy parents who pull their kids out and don’t push and help them just let them flounder further. It can be done, it’s not easy for the parents/guardians or the kids, but it can be done and achieves results that the kids never thought they could achieve.

My 13 year old son was animatedly telling me yesterday how much he hates pigs. Why? Because he’s reading Animal Farm. He was able to draw parallels between that book and what he knows is going on today in our world. Daughter is in Toastmasters and today is giving a speech about the differences between extroverts and introverts. She herself is an introvert but now feels comfortable speaking in public thanks to this group.

I’ve never regretted for one moment that we chose to homeschool our kids from the beginning, but I fear that my children won’t be given that opportunity. Too many dark clouds of fascism and communism on our horizon with a government intent on having total control of each and every individual from cradle to grave. Homeschoolers are far too independent minded for their liking.
