When my wife was called to the school office because my son had a half centimeter by a half centimeter lego gun it should have been a clue we needed to home school. But it was the fact that he was falling behind even though we spent hours every night teaching him that made us home school.

He just got into a fight with his sister about who gets a advanced chemistry text book. That would never have happened in public school.

We have 4 children, 17,15,12, and 11. They have never been to a government indoctrination center (”public” school).

My children are taught how to think not what to think.

We had four kids go through the public school, and yes we were conflicted. My lovely wife tutored them all after school, we corrected much of the nonsense and not only monitored it, but countered it; they've turned out just fine.

That being said, with the gains in resources for parents, and the horrendous decline in the public schools, if we were parents of little ones now, we would choose to home school them. It's a no brainer. It's the far better choice for most who want to pass along goodness and truth to their children.

We have 8 children and started before it was cool: 1982. Wife and I both were former public school teachers with Bachelor’s degrees.

Results:

Oldest: first home-schooled student admitted to University of Richmond - graduated Summa Cum Laude with 4 simultaneous degrees: B.S.’s in Math & Computer Science; B.A.’s in Physics and Greek. Was worth $1.3 million when 26 - before internet crash, came out well still; entrepreneur, owner of 1 business, partner in 2 others.

#2: 5 years in Army, Dean’s list Senior at Liberty Univ. getting B.A. in Aviation to be missionary pilot

#3: 5 years missionary with YWAM, now a straight A Junior at Univ. of Virginia working on B.A. in Linguistics, minor in Portuguese in which she is fluent from working/living in Brazil. Plans to join Wycliff Bible Translators after getting degree.

#4: Very successful realtor, making big bucks.

#5: Branch & Project Manager with large commercial electrical contracting firm. Triathalete, serious marathoner with 2:58 PR: done all the big marathons.

#7: Pharmacist Tech with major pharmacy; gourmet cook & artist

#8: E-5 in Navy, finishing 6 years, headed for Boston University to finish B.S. in Aeronautical/Aerospace Engineering with plans to return to Navy, get commission, achieve flight school, fly fighters.

All are known professionally as being tops in what they do and are greatly respected and commended for their work standards, ethics and character - and stand out among their peers.

All are serious Christians - by the grace of God.

Congratulations indeed. My only child, a daughter is home schooling her brood. Lisa uses a Catholic-based program for her children. The oldest is 14 but I see in all of them potential for the results you describe. As an early indicator the oldest, when still 12, took the ACT verbal and scored at around the 92nd percentile among high-schoolers.

I agree totally. My two children went to public schools and
public college. I made sure I monitored and tutored at home.
Hubby and I made sure they learned about true US history and the Constitution etc. We were lucky to live in a good
solid town with a good solid quasi-conservative school system (a rarity here in the Peoples Republic of Mass.) One of my parenting regrets is not teaching them more history...
They both turned out well and thank G-d majored in actual
fields - both are employed in their fields* (another rarity).

However, if my kids were young today, they would most likely
be home schooled. Some of the things I hear co-workers talk about regarding “public schools these days.....” make my head spin.

*my daughter is a teacher who REFUSES to teach in public schools. She teaches at a wonderful private school. You should hear her rant on public education today!

ANOTHER REASON TO HOMESCHOOL

This ping list is for the “other” articles of interest to homeschoolers about education and public school. This can occasionally be a fairly high volume list. Articles pinged to the Another Reason to Homeschool List will be given the keyword of ARTH. (If I remember. If I forget, please feel free to add it yourself)

The main Homeschool Ping List handles the homeschool-specific articles. I hold both the Homeschool Ping List and the Another Reason to Homeschool Ping list. Please freepmail me to let me know if you would like to be added to or removed from either list, or both.
