Florida, the Freest State in the Country?

California, New York, and New Jersey always rank near the bottom of these lists as intrusive, red tape-bound hellholes.

The First in Freedom Index actually draws from a lot of the sources that have been cited here before, including the Fraser Institute's Economic Freedom of North America as well as Mercatus Center's Freedom in the 50 States, the Tax Foundation's State Business Tax Climate Index, and measures put together by the Center for Education Reform, among others.

To this, the North Carolina group adds its own weight and emphasis. The ultimate score is an average across the categories it examines. Florida, for example, is in first place overall, but at 5 in terms of fiscal policy, 1 in educational freedom, 45 in regulatory freedom, and 30 in healthcare freedom.

FLORIDA: "30 in healthcare freedom"

That is an insane ranking.

i would wager that Florida has far more healthcare options than most other states.

Partially because of the retirement population healthcare is a huge industry in the state.

The last “Freedom in the 50 States” release I saw had Tennessee in the top 3... I wonder what happened. Plus, I doubt the weighting if Floriduh is #1.

I have a friend that moved, following her parents to Ponte Vedra Beach... from NJ. Not all the New Jersey/New York people moving down your way are Conservatives, though.

My family has been in Florida since at least the 1700s. Most of the state is conservative and freedom loving. Unfortunately the liberal areas are also heavily populated. From what I have seen, states like New York and Illinois would be conservative if you took N.Y. City and Chicago out.

Basically all of Florida North of Orlando is conservative. There is an area from about Tallahassee West to Marianna which was once the plantation zone. It is heavily Black and they vote liberal.

I’ve been living in NOLA for a while and they let folks do whatever they want here. You can even ride a horse down the street

I agree, but the amount of moving here from southern states and Yankees still off sets the loons

With the major exception of Alachua County, with the most populous city of Gainesville— with more liberal socialist loons per square foot than the rural parts where farmers are, and light industry. The county consistently wins for the dems. The U of FL controls the system in the county in major ways.

And, the joke of the last 2 years is the new “biomass” power plant nightmare, that is so bad (because there is not enough biomass to provide power like coal has) that they are having to ship pulpwood in from GA at extensive cost. Course the whole thing is paid by federal socialist of obamaumao, the “new, green energy” liar. Hippies run the city anyway. There are some good folks there, and conservatives are castigated constantly.

The panhandle used to be the purview of the democrat machine Pork Chop gang— Dempsey Barron and such. Have old FL connex. here in our family, tho not to the 1700’s

Most people know nothing of Old Florida, the history. For example that Prince Murat lived in St. Augustine (Napoleon’s nephew) and in Tallahassee. Or that direct descendents of Thomas Jefferson settled in Leon county, the Eppes.
The state is fascinating if you stay away from the condominia of S. FL, the weirdos in the Keys and the increasingly weird Orlando crowd and politics— all due to queer Disney (which should never have been brought into Central FL). Death of citrus in Central FL affected many grand old families. But the state is still the largest producer of beef cattle (shipped to TX to fatten up and sell, from the old days of Lykes-Pasco shipping line).

Sadly, most people move to FL for the weather (the wrong damn reason to do so) and then bring their lib politics with them, and then proceed to whine about hurricanes. The crackers and the conchs know what’s up— if you can find any. Deo Vindice.

I feel you. What infuriates me is that they let the student vote on city matters, once they get their degree, they’re gone, and leave us holding the liberal aftermath. And the constant tinkering with the road system, narrowing already serious choke points to encourage
use of the crappy bus system. ..I could get across San Diego county quicker than I can get from one side of Gainesville to the other. Grrr!

We voted no on drugs, liberal-tarians think drugs should be legal.

Our Florida parks have signs that read, "No drugs". When legalized drugs show up, I won't be going here—public parks (which I support through taxes) then become another form of robbery.

people who use the slogan of no Govt and authoritarian make me laugh. Those people would like to use those slogans to get rid of incest laws, no age of consent, drug laws, would it make them happy to have a whore house next door or maybe a crack house since drugs are legal, hey why not get rid of these laws after all why have Govt dictating these laws, hell lets have anarchy .

Paul is a wolf in sheep’s clothing and if those pro drug, pro amnesty, pro homo’s think they have it right then they should run in their own party and even get on their own websites as websites like this is conservatives, not socially communist liberal-tarian

There they can have their debates for pro homosexual marriage, pro amnesty, pro druggie talks and then slap each other on the back on how great it would be to have no Govt what so ever

we have enough dopey idiots without having more idiots getting high on their drugs in public and if I don’t have to breath in smoke why should I have to breath in their drugs at a park.

Know St. Aug, St. John’s Cty, extremely well. The Ancient City has all of the US history in a microcosm, as well as the post Spanish and English and French colonial hegemony all wrapped up there.

The libs there are living off the fat of the hardworking conservatives, and do not see any irony in that at all— but living testimony that socialism cannot exist without a healthy capitalist system working to siphon its money away.
