Boris Nemtsov, leading Putin critic, shot and killed in Moscow

A top political nemesis of President Vladimir Putin was shot and killed early Saturday in central Moscow, Russian police said, one day before an opposition rally was scheduled to take place.

Boris Nemtsov, 55, a former deputy prime minister, was shot four times from a passing car as he was walking on a bridge just outside the Kremlin. Interior Ministry spokeswoman Yelena Alexeyeva told reporters on the scene that Nemtsov was walking with a female acquaintance, a Ukrainian citizen, when a vehicle drove up and unidentified assailants shot him dead. The woman wasn't hurt.

April 2003 - Sergei Yushenkov, co-chairman of the Liberal Russia political party, is gunned down at the entrance of his Moscow apartment block. Yushenkov had been serving as the vice chair of the group known as the “Kovalev Commission” which was formed to informally investigate charges that Putin’s KGB had planted the Pechatniki and Kashirskoye apartment bombs

July 2003 - Yuri Shchekochikhin , a vocal opposition journalist and member of the Russian Dumaand the Kovalev Commission, suddenly contracts a mysterious illness. After his sudden death on July 3rd. The Russian authorities refused to allow an autopsy, his relatives “managed to send a specimen of his skin to London, where a tentative diagnosis was made of poisoning with thallium” (a poison commonly used by the KGB, at first suspected in the Litvinenko killing).

June 2004 - Nikolai Girenko, a prominent human rights defender, Professor of Ethnology and expert on racism and discrimination in the Russian Federation is shot dead in his home in St Petersburg.

July 2004 - Paul Klebnikov, editor of the Russian edition Forbes magazine, is shot and killed in Moscow.

September 2004 - Viktor Yushchenko, anti-Russian candidate for the presidency of the Ukraine, is poisoned by Dioxin. Yushchenko’s chief of staff OlegRibachuk suggests that the poison used was amycotoxin called T-2, also known as “Yellow Rain,” a Soviet-era substance which was reputedly used in Afghanistan as a chemical weapon. Miraculously, he survives the attack.

September 2006 - Andrei Kozlov, First Deputy Chairman of Russia’s Central Bank, who strove to stamp out money laundering the highest-ranking reformer in Russia, is shot and killed in Moscow.

October 2006 - Anna Politkovskaya, author of countless books and articles exposing Russian human rights violations in Chechnya and attacking Vladimir Putin as a dictator, is shot and killed at her home in Moscow.

November 2006 - Alexander Litvinenko, KGB defector and author of the book Blowing up Russia, which accuses the Kremlin of masterminding the and Pechatniki andKashirskoye bombings in order to blame Chechen terrorists and whip up support for an invasion of Chechnya (which shortly followed), is fatally poisoned by radioactive Polonium obtained from Russian sources.

On January 19, 2009, Russian human rights attorney Stanslav Markelov was shot in the back of the head with a silenced pistol as he left a press conference at which he announced his intention to sue the Russian government for its early release of the Col. Yuri Budanov, who murdered his 18-year-old client in Chechnya five years earlier. Also shot and killed was Anastasia Barburova, a young journalism student who was working for Novaya Gazeta and who had studied under Anna Politkovskaya, reporting on the Budanov proceedings.

On July 14, 2009, leading Russian human rights journalist and activist Natalia Estemirova , a single mother of a teenaged daughter, was abducted in front of her home in Grozny, Chechnya, spirited across the border into Ingushetia, shot and dumped in a roadside gutter.

I’ve no witness or physical evidence available to prove to you that the man who organized a protest against Putin’s cruel and unprovoked war on Ukraine, the man who was murdered yesterday was murdered by the Saintly Putin, Palidin of the Christian Faith, coincidentally a former Communist Colonel in the KGB for 17 years. I was not there on the street when the shots were fired. It’s possible too that John Gotti did not shoot Paul Castellano. I think at a minimum, the climate in Russia enables this, yes, Putin is responsible and many of those who follow the Russian propaganda hook, line and sinker are as well.

All the US Media saying the same thing like Pete and re-Pete.. ...But Nemtsov was defying the Kremlin since the 1990's...had Putin wanted him out it would have been done a long while ago....now it would just discredit and demonize Putin both at home and abroad - and that was probably the intention. However most in Russia saw Nemtsov associated with the Yeltsin 'disaster' and was then a possible heir to Yeltsin....which is why his following was limtied...he was very unpopular amongst most because as Yeltsin's man he was part of the government which made Russia indebted to the US and a pauper state......Even so... US wanted to use him in the "Russian Spring", they keep trying to organize to raise public outcry sufficient to remove Putin.

Here's McCain with Nemtsov and we know full well how things always go when McCain plays in the game.

Interesting too that US Ambassador left Ukraine colored ribbon's flowers at the Nemtsov site where he died.....and as interesting that the woman Nemtsov was walking with was a Ukrainian citizen.......Poroshenko was quick to respond on his facebook page.. ..."He was a bridge between Ukraine and Russia. The murderers' shot destroyed that.".....

Putin is too powerful for me to believe this would be a hit to make Putin look bad. I would not necessarily accuse Putin directly, the climate there might have some take this man out.

We tend to compare our political means and ways to how the rest of the world should conduct theirs. But the reality is Russian and Ukrainian politics play to win and that leaves nothing at all off the table for either sides. Their politics are brutal and fought as such....even to death.

There are plenty of threats against Putin...b those who are preparing to take his position. It's just how things are played there. Remember that it was Putin and Nemtsov up to take Yeltsin's position...the difference between the two...Putin had the connections to keep Yeltzin and his family safe through the transition and thereafter....Nemtsov had none of that....so safety is always going to win out no matter what any Russian politician might hope for. Unfortunately the our country is also playing the same game...they just are more proficient at hiding what they do. What is interesting to me is if Nemtsov was such a famous opposition to Putin...what was he doing walking across a bridge in the middle of the night without protection? I am sincerely questioning how the girlfriend comes into to play on this as they had just ad dinner together....did she lead him to walk?...currently that is what's understood...that it was her suggestion to walk. You know we will never know what really happened.

Oh I can name plenty who would stand to gain by making this look like Putin.....Yats and Poroshenko know the only way they can win and obtain EU Membership is by inciting war between Purtin and Obama and proking that....the same of the Western Ukrainians who do not want any Russians in Ukraine.

I'm thinking it was someone in the West Ukraine Militia's orchestrating the hit.....they've been consistently provoking the war to continue...and want with a passion to have Putin fully “invade” Ukraine. At any rate...expect more of this same type of violence....it's on the streets of Kiev daily....because Ukraine IS and always has been a divided country....the EAst and West Ukraine will always oppose one another.

If he said something especially provocative maybe someone decided to go down to the station and settle the score.

Am dumbfounded that two days before a major protest headlining a so called Popular Nemtsov.. a supposed well known figure... that he was walking around without security.....

Perhaps Nemtsov wasn't as popular in Russia, or a threat to Putin, as much as he was our man to organize and headline a Russian Spring????

Well, supposedly, it may be all talk, Nemtsov was going to make information public that demonstrated the Kremlin is involved in the Ukraine invasion, so there is that.

If he was going to do that, then it wouldn’t make sense for a Ukrainian Militia to kill him.

I think that is in the stories on Nemtsov. Not saying I know that to be the truth, he may have said that just prior. He had an interview that day I think.
