Legislation approving the controversial Keystone XL Pipeline has finally reached the presidents desk. But dont celebrate just yet.
In a joint op-ed published today in the pages of USA Today, House Speaker John Boehner (R-OH) and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) are urging Americans to begin tempering their hopes and expectations by accepting the inevitable:
Tuesday, as promised, the new Congress is sending the White House legislation that would approve the Keystone XL pipeline. This project will support tens of thousands of American jobs. It will bolster the nation's infrastructure and energy security. And it enjoys a broad base of support from Republicans and Democrats, labor unions and small business owners, not to mention an overwhelming majority of Americans.
Keystone is a no-brainer in every way, but the White House says the president will veto this jobs bill. Americans deserve to know why, and what a veto would mean.
They argue approving the Keystone pipeline will create jobs, stabilize the U.S. economy, reduce our reliance on foreign oil, and take seriously the wishes of the American public. Thus, if President Obama vetoes the legislation, it would be a huge mistake. "Keystone brings a real benefit to our economy," they write. "That's according to the president's own State Department, which says the project will support at least 42,000 American jobs." At the same time, they attribute the presidents foot-dragging to "politics." According to them, the president is beholden to liberal extremists who are unnecessarily stymieing and holding up a project that many Americans agree should have been constructed years ago.
So because the president is not a fan of Keystone, it seems he will veto the legislation either today or sometime later this week. Stay tuned.
UPDATE: That didn't take long.
BREAKING: White House notifies Senate that Obama has vetoed Keystone XL oil pipeline bill.— The Associated Press (@AP) February 24, 2015
UPDATE: Not one to mince words, Speaker Boehner has blasted out a press release describing the president's veto as a "national embarrassment."
The presidents veto of the Keystone jobs bill is a national embarrassment. Its embarrassing when Russia and China are plowing ahead on two massive pipelines and we cant get this one no-brainer of a project off the ground. The president is just too close to environmental extremists to stand up for Americas workers. Hes too invested in left-fringe politics to do what presidents are called on to do, and thats put the national interest first.

UPDATE: RNC Chairman Reince Priebus has also issued a brief statement.
The least President Obama can do is look the American people in the eye when he is so blatantly defying them. The fact he vetoed the bipartisan Keystone Pipeline in private shows how out of step he is with the priorities of the American people, who overwhelmingly support this vital jobs and infrastructure project.
I’d like to shove the pipeline up his ass.
Conflict of interest?
Would the pipeline compete with the income of the Durham/Obama family trust. (check out income from his schedule E when he first took office)

I’d really love to see a list of all the major cities the oil trains roll through.
Routes and times are probably secret for good reason but conservatives and republicans should be ahead of the game and on the record warning people before a disaster and inevitable blame from the democrats.
Bakken oil rolls through Chicago and Detroit.
Barack Hussein Obama, doing what’s worst for America and her allies, and doing what’s best for her enemies.
First I thought the US Senators were uninformed and dumb. Then I thought they were corrupt beyond caring about what happens to the US or us citizens. Now I'm beginning to see them as clueless zombies, adrift in the DC smog, just going through the motions they're told to.

The winner!
If the Leadership truly had any soul or belief in doing the right thing, they would immediately Abolish the Filibuster in the Senate, and force this marxist, muslim, petulant, man-child to VETO a Bill EVERY DAY. That is how you whoop a Bully!
Harry Reid would never allow obstructionists, why are you?
He’d actually enjoy that.
I’ve looked at some of the railroad tracks in my neighborhood. They’re really bad. Roads closed
all future rail oil accidents to be blamed on BO.
Well, for the first time in his career, President Obama couldn’t vote PRESENT.
Now is the time to keep sending bills to the Senate and to his desk, if you can get them there, so he will have to make more decisions. The more he vetoes, the more he entrenches the Democrats as the party of NO. At some point, this will become nuclear for all Democrats, and they will either break from the leftists or lose more elections.
The solution to gridlock is not term limits. It is voting often to force politicians to take a stand on e way or another. Over time, the people can take care of the rest in elections.
They must keep voting! Unfortunately it takes strong leadership to do this, and Mr. Boehner is neither courageous nor clever enough for the task at hand.
Proving once again Barry doesn’t love this country...continually does what’s worse for us
Obama POSotUS.
WOOOOOO!!!!!! :D
That’s my point about finding out where they go and getting on the record warning people about it.
My winner is post #2.
He vetoed it for one reason...because he could. If it doesn’t get piped...it gets trucked or railed
Warren Buffett Profits Hugely from Obama Keystone Decision
Running the oil via railroad will cost much more than running it through the pipeline. Captive shippers have previously complained about the higher rates BNSF has been charging due to the premium Buffetts Berkshire Hathaway paid for the company. BNSFs higher rates have even affected the cost of shipping food on the railroad. Recently, The National Association of Wheat Growers past President Wayne Hurst testified to the Surface Transportation Board that growers are increasingly concerned about the higher cost of shipping on the BNSF railroad.
Buffet also stands to profit from the rising oil costs in the United States. Coal is a major alternative to oil and its derivative, natural gas. Coal also plays a large role in the profits of BNSF. In fact, hauling coal made up a quarter of BNSFs revenue during 2009, and BNSF railway cars hauled coal more than any other single material. BNSF plans $3.9 billion in capital spending this year, as the company boosts capacity for coal shipments. If oil and natural gas had won out through approval of the Keystone XL pipeline, this could have had a significant negative impact on BNSFs large coal business.
The Keystone XL permit was denied after loud opposition from environmentalists, this despite the fact that three years of environmental impact studies were conducted by the State Department that determined the pipeline would have no significant impacts. Among the groups leading the charge for no pipeline was the group Bold Nebraska. The Bold Nebraska campaign was funded to a great extent by Dick Holland, an old Buffett friend and associate. Both are big Democratic Party contributors.
