Imagine If Obama Gave FDR's Pearl Harbor Speech
Truth Revolt ^ | February 20, 2015 | Yehuda Remer

One of the most famous speeches in American history is the one given by President Franklin Delano Roosevelt the day after Pearl Harbor was attacked, in which he said:

“ Yesterday, December 7, 1941, a date which will live in infamy – The United States of America was suddenly and deliberately attacked by the naval and air forces of the Empire of Japan. The United States was at peace with that nation, and at the solicitation of Japan, was still in conversation with its government and its Emperor.

Imagine if Obama gave that speech that rallied a nation into World War II. Cartoonist Bob Gorrell has envisioned such a scenario. In a new cartoon, Gorrell shows what the speech would have been like if it were edited by Barack Obama.

Obama would have been quite concerned with the Japanese attack. He would immediately check to see if his Hawaii golf courses survived.

Well, it wasn’t much in doubt after 1943, it was a matter of time.

But the battle in the Solomons, which was one the largest air, sea, and ground battles of the war, was fought on equal footing with the Japanese. We were in no way superior to them at that time, and certainly not in combat experience. We had a lot to learn at that point that we all take for granted now.

Most people don’t realize that in the Solomons naval casualties outnumbered land casualties by a factor of four to one. Hundreds of men at a time were butchered in naval battles fought with guns between cruisers, battleships, and destroyers. We were going toe to toe with them and losing ship for ship. Men in the water on a large scale being ravaged by sharks.

But for the unbelievable toughness of the US Marines on Guadalcanal, that could have gone the other way. It was not a given at that time even though many see it that way now.

Archie: All right, all right, I apologise.
Otto: You’re really sorry.

Archie: I’m really really sorry, I apologise unreservedly.
Otto: You take it back.

Archie: I do, I offer a complete and utter retraction. The imputation was totally without basis in fact, and was in no way fair comment, and was motivated purely by malice, and I deeply regret any distress that my comments may have caused you, or your family, and I hereby undertake not to repeat any such slander at any time in the future.

Otto: OK.

Behind this air attack will follow sea and land forces in such number......” WOW!!!! Did they say uncle? nope. Okay ricers......have one more said Harry!!!! BA-BOOOOM!!! That one did the trick and save untold numbers of lives on both sides.

When IS hits America hard and lots of Folks, Americans, are burned alive on National TV. Maybe a hotel is burned or a Casino in Las Vegas? When this new Pearl Harbor hits—Obama will step up and give a great speach to congress—he will have no choice-—Then we will have Boots on the Ground! It will be as good as FDRs speach long ago—Obama is good at giving a speach—give him that. But, it will take something that kills 3,000+ lives to cause this change.

He’d be saying that the cause was because we didn’t help the Japanese find jobs.

Japan simply didn't have the industrial might to sustain any kind of attack on mainland America. It's best hope was for Germany to defeat Britain and Russia in time to help. We actually put Japan on the back burner (read that phrase in many books about WWII) and concentrated on defeating Germany first.

Plus, Britain was fighting Japan in India, Burma, and Thailand draining Japan's resources from the other end. Japan's position by itself was hopeless in the long run. And Japan wasted troops in China as well. The miracle didn't happen.

Like Yamamoto (who knew America's industrial might) predicted, Japan would run wild the first year or two before the Allies (especially the U.S.) got organized. Then it would be one defeat after the other. That's exactly how it played out. If Japan had somehow managed to defeat the Marines at Guadalcanal, it would not have been long before another huge U.S. task force would have arrived to reconquer the island.

All of that is completely true.

But I think people are conflating what I am saying to mean we could have lost the war in the Pacific with saying there is a possibility we might not have won. Those aren’t the same thing.

in 2015 (heck, even in 1950) it is easy for people to accept the outcome of WWII as a predestined result, and it wasn’t. It had to be fought hard, with much expenditure of blood and money.

But that expenditure takes national will, and it is never a given that a national will is up the the challenge. One has only to look at the American Revolution. The British did not have the national will to continue and win the war. Many of us look at and think “Of course we won! What other outcome could there have been?”

I am currently reading the Memoirs of Ulysses S. Grant, and he mentions at one point he thought it was a very real possibility that the North, after three hard years of fighting with the South, could have gone along with partitioning the country and being done with the war if a particular battle had not been won.

A lot of things can happen on the road to winning a war. Human beings have to prosecute a war, money, machines and industrial might cannot do it, only people can do it. And that requires will.

And will sometimes weakens.

I was lucky. I got to take advantage of learning things about life and personal conduct while I served, and and didn’t have to have a strong possibility of losing life or limb in the process if I did my job correctly and didn’t screw around.

There are a lot of people like me who were able to reap the benefit of the experience without being put in a position to get reaped by it.

For that, I am happy and grateful...:)

That be the one! Been my favorite speech by a President for a lot of years. Could never happen now I’m sorry to say. Check out this gag tho: ‘If the muslims do not now accept our terms they can face a RAIN OF RUIN from the air not ever seen on this earth. We will completely destroy islam’s means to make war......etc. etc. etc’. Heh!

Obama: “I read in the newspaper that yesterday, December 7, 1941, a date which will live as a bump in the road – The United States of America was suddenly and deliberately attacked by the naval and air forces of the Empire of Japan, the overwhelming majority of which are a peaceful people with legitimate grievances of their own. Therefore, before we get on our high horse, in order to better understand the root causes that lead to such behavior, I am convening a three day conference to discuss ways in which we can reach out to them and bring a peaceful solution what was obviously a random act on the part of a few disenfranchised people of the Asian world.”

Yesterday, December 7th, 1941, the date when I first realized how much more I have to do before I can begin to bring peace to the world, a group of extremists committed an act of random violence against some government employees over in Asia. Because I grew up in Hawaii and I’ve always considered it my home state, the news of this kinetic military action concerned me.

Although the extremists were from the nation of Japan, we must be careful not to consider all Japanese as extremists. These displaced youth who can’t find work in their homeland (because of American corporations stealing all of their resources) represent only a tiny fraction of the entire Japanese people.

When ever I go to Japan, I always make sure to bow in respect to this ancient culture of dignity and peace. So, even though some of our countrymen were hurt in this random act, I know that the Japanese at heart want only peace with America.

My security advisor assures me that these misguided youth were unfortunately incited to commit this crime because of an anti-Japanese video produced by a homegrown conservative terrorist here in America.

Therefore, I am sending a delegation to Tokyo to negotiate terms of peace among our two countries. And me me say firmly, that If the Japanese leaders don’t listen, I am drawing a red line that if crossed will cause me to lose patience and will not take any options off the table, including stiff economic and cultural sanctions.

As I said in my book, Dreams from my Father, We are the ones we have been waiting for. We are the ones who will bring hope and change. We are the ones will will make the oceans recede and see the planet healed.

So let me conclude with these final thoughts: If you like your Pearl Harbor, you can keep your Pearl Harbor. Thank you very much! And may Allah bless America!

I can’t even begin to imagine anything resembling FDR’s Pearl speech coming out of Jughead.

But FDR was no saint either.
