ENGLISH PROFESSOR Gives Students Extra Credit For Attending Rally Against Scott Walker’s Budget

A literature professor at the University of Wisconsin–Whitewater has offered students in her courses extra credit for attending a Thursday evening rally against budget cuts to the University of Wisconsin System proposed by Gov. Scott Walker.

The professor is Beth Lueck.

On Wednesday, Lueck notified students in her freshman English class about the exciting extra-credit assignment.

“UWW students have organized a non-partisan [sic] rally with students, faculty, and community members on the UW Whitewater campus against Gov. Walker’s proposed $300 million cut to the UW system, along with speaking out against attacks on shared governance and faculty,” Lueck wrote.

Protest organizers asked participants to meet outside the school library. From there, they would march over to Timmerman Auditorium to hear state Rep. Andy Jorgensen, a Democrat, and a local city council member speak against budget cuts.

More about Professor Lueck!

Beth Lueck For District 8

http://cognidissidence.blogspot.com/2012/10/beth-lueck-for-district-8.html

Sunday, October 28, 2012

From Professor Lueck:

I’m running a write-in campaign as a Democrat against Alberta Darling in Senate District 8.

My goal is to return integrity and civility to the state legislature.

In the proud tradition of Wisconsin progressivism I stand for transparency in state politics and a return to working together with Democrats, Republicans, and Independents.

Together we can improve our state’s economy, bring back respect for unions that strive for better working conditions for everyone, support veterans, and improve our schools, from K-12 through the UW System, which have suffered from years of declining state support.

I support full civil rights for everyone in Wisconsin and women’s reproductive rights.

I also believe that Wisconsin should take all necessary steps to be in full compliance with the federal Affordable Health Care Act.

As a Professor of English at UW-Whitewater I will dedicate myself as a citizen-legislator to work together with others for a better Wisconsin for everyone.

The recent gerrymandering of districts by Wisconsin Republicans has resulted in districts so lopsided that in many cases no other party is running against the incumbent.

As Steven Walters of WisconsinEye pointed out in the 16 September Journal Sentinel, few of the Assembly seats and even fewer Senate seats this fall are really competitive.

A situation where candidates run unopposed is contrary to the very basis of democracy.

Therefore I’m announcing my candidacy for the Wisconsin State Senate seat in District 8.

Thank you”

Okay, you brought it up first, so here is what I have a problem with. I did watch the 2013 video in its entirety and I heard the question (ostensibly about Amnesty without saying "Amnesty") where the off-camera person asked [paraphrasing] "...given the right penalties, waiting periods, etc. can you envision a means for these 11 million illegals staying here with eventual citizenship?" Walker's immediate response began with "Sure". Then in the interview with Baier:

BAIER: In 2013, you said you supported a path to citizenship for people living here illegally, but recently you've — WALKER: Actually, I'm glad you asked about that, because the Wausau newspaper erroneously quoted me on that. They listed a video on their website that actually showed that the person who asked the question said that, not me, and ever since then I've had to deal with reports over and over again.

To me this is a half truth and is disingenuous because he answered the question asked affirmatively.

Do not confuse a blanket Band-Aid statement about "against Amnesty..." as an absolute - it depends on what his definition of that is. All he needs to do to get my vote is to conclusively and precisely state that he is against illegals currently in this country to remain here legally, and that as criminals should not be given citizenship. It's that simple.

Amnesty as a word is a contorted convenience among a lot of politicians, and they should be forced to stop using it as a catch-all position for contorted definitions, IMO.

It’s a rare college where freshman English composition is taught by a tenure-track professor of any rank. She’s more likely a graduate assistant or an adjunct.

All will become clear.

Right now there are some people who want another candidate to be the GOP ticket holder (and I’m okay with some of the other possibilities) and so they are working overtime to piece things together (some stuff from years ago), read the tea leaves and interpret answers to questions from hostile interviewers. Add to all of that, the Left is going to taint their news and massage it to start taking our guys out.

Let’s not help them.

I’m not going to try to answer your question because I really don’t know when, where, why and the how of those exchanges.

I don’t have a problem of being for him if he meets my test of what I’ll ask of any candidate I eventually support.

I don’t care about any of their definitions of amnesty and this insane thing about ‘immigration reform’. You can’t reform laws that aren’t even enforced.

My number one criteria is that they not support legalization of illegals here and absolutely no citizenship for them under ANY condition, period.

Nothing really new here. In undergrad, in DC, professors would throw out all sorts of academic incentives and disincentives to goad students into attending rallies. Thats why the attendence numbers can never be taken seriously, the rallies are packed with kids who are pretty much compelled to attend.

There was a big anti-war rally in mid-January 1991 (right before the kickoff to Desert Storm) that a professor made attendence at mandatory. We had to bring back some item showing we’d gone.

A group of us (including a fair number of ROTC students) went down together and discovered a counter-rally being held across the street. Where the organizers were giving away “Free Kuwait!” tee shirts.

The professor was LIVID when we showed up at the next class wearing them. One of the ROTC guys told him flat out that if he didn’t accept them as proof we were all going to go down, en masse, to the Dean.

Professor backed down, but seethed about it all semester. Probably tanked our grades a bit in the end, but not by enough that we could really challenge him. But it was worth it, esp when we wore the shirts again to the first class following the cease-fire.
