Worse yet, he waited 4 or 5 years after high school before entering college, then dropped out during his undergrad years and took time off between graduation and grad school. Wars are inconvenient like that. Interesting Dean was schooled in the late 60s with no such inconvenience. Bad back (which didn't prevent working as a ski instructor), med school deferment. Not stupid. Especially since his number, 143, in the first lottery, was a winner.

May I join in your puzzlement? The opposition has not been pro forma, as one would normally expect in a procedural dispute. Instead, there is a manic quality to their opposition -- as if the speech will cause the public (and the Congress?) to discover something they're not supposed to know.
Or as if it will upset some exquisitely balanced and carefully timed calculation.
Something is clearly driving them to over-react. With this gang, a childish tantrum is certainly possible. But it is hard to understand.
