An estimated 25,000 people died in the British and American attack, which created a firestorm that left 33 sq km (12 sq miles) of the city in ruins.

Speaking at the city's Church of Our Lady, German President Joachim Gauck said the attack had "burned itself into the memory" of survivors.

The city was believed by Allied forces to be a vital Nazi command centre.

It was used by German forces to defend the country against Soviet forces approaching from the east.

I read the opposite. Dresden was selected as a target to help Stalin.

If Kurt Vonnegut wasn’t a POW near there and didn’t write Slaughterhouse-Five, would most of us have heard about Dresden?

Brits did not commit war crimes.

Where were you when this was going on? My parents were up to their neck in this - my father stuck in the cannibalistic hellhole of Easter Island about to be sent in, yet again, to war, and my mom trying to recover from the death of her first husband when he was shot by a sniper in Germany - two weeks before the war was over.

I guess they don't teach you youngsters about Nuremberg or Tokyo in school these days.

That's a very real problem. Much of what happened is off limits to talk about. Fortunately here in the USA we can still openly discuss things for now.

Third Reich - The Rise

This is not the story of how Adolph hitler seized power in Germany. This is the story of how and why the German people gave it to him.

Christopher Hitchens also hated Churchill. Something very messed up in that family - both of them seemingly at war with their father - who fought bravely in the navy during WWII.

“If Kurt Vonnegut wasn’t a POW near there and didn’t write Slaughterhouse-Five, would most of us have heard about Dresden?”

My uncle was a forced laborer there (Polish slave) and survived. He told me he knew the war would soon be over when Allied planes blotted out the sun in daylight.

Things like that should not be forgotten! Nor wiped from the minds of those who cannot comprehend war. In the past months we have seen a enemy advancing daily and the Liberal attitude is it isn’t effecting ME! Wait for their turn in the fiery cage.
A blind eye is a terrible affliction!
Stay safe and secure!

The soviets kept a lid on most of the war-city information as well. It made the Allies look like we firebombed an artful city that had nothing to do with waging war.

Good propaganda

It was a tragic event in which thousands of civilians, many innocent, died. Simple as that. War is hell, true, and terrible things happen, but those of you cracking jokes about it, puffing up your chests and telling us all that you have no sympathy for the women and children that died screaming and burning, well...Not that you care but my respect for you drops.

May I remind you that our own holocaust is significantly larger and has gone on significantly longer than the one perpetrated by the Nazis...What have we done about it? Not enough. Not nearly enough.

The Indianapolis was sunk after delivering the bomb. Just for an exercise?

The bomb costs a LOT of money and many lives before it was dropped.

No way.

hiroshima prevented a deeper humiliation to the Japanese which would have been an invasion and occupation.

Indeed, and we never occupied Japan the way Germany was occupied with Soviet blessings.

Its amazing how similar liberals are to Germans of Nazi Germany. Hitler was a “savior” just like Obama.
