Clarity on Marine Security Force departure from Yemen (Official USMC Statement)
USMC.mil ^ | February 11, 2015 | USMC Public Affairs

HEADQUARTERS MARINE CORPS, WASHINGTON — The Marine Security Force left the American embassy in Yemen for the movement to the airfield as part of the "ordered departure" with only personal weapons. All crew served weapons were destroyed at the embassy prior to movement. None of them were 'handed over' in any way to anyone. The destruction of weapons at the embassy and the airport was carried out in accordance with an approved destruction plan.

Upon arrival at the airfield, all personal weapons were rendered inoperable in accordance with advance planning. Specifically, each bolt was removed from its weapons body and rendered inoperable by smashing with sledgehammers. The weapons bodies, minus the bolts, were then separately smashed with sledgehammers. All of these destroyed components were left at the airport -- and components were scattered; no usable weapon was taken from any Marine at Sana'a airport.

To be clear: No Marine handed a weapon to a Houthi, or had one taken from him.

Dunno, but the word from Pentagon reporters is that the CENTCOM brass is mighty pissed off about it.

Its time we remove all DOD assets from State Department control. If they want a security force they can hire the local gangs like in benghazi.

The security of DOD personnel should never be left to whims of idiots at State.

True, yet he still ran and gave up the embassy and who knows what was in it for his Houthis yutes. Yes I know America wasn’t the only embassy to bail.

The original reports referred to it as a “contracted” plane. Then it became a “commercial” or “civilian” plane. IMO, the reference changed inorder to explain the decision to disarm the Marines. Does anyone really believe US Marines extracted from a US embassy under emergency conditions were put on a commercial airliner with civilian passengers, leaving a chaotic hot spot in the ME? Commercial or civilian terminology simply means it was NOT a US military aircraft, government owned. I am betting the only people on that plane were US military and other embassy assets.

As well it should have been only the military and embassy assets on that plane.

As such, there was no need to leave personal weapons behind, as the plane would have been in the control of the US military.

If the plane’s owner did not want weapons on the plane, they should get business elsewhere, and the military could have sent in one or two C-130s to accomplish the task.

As usual with this administration,no explanation seems to make sense.

There is never a need for a US Marine to surrender a weapon in an evacuation scenario, unless they are a prisoner, as in Iran in 1979.

The more this type of scenario is allowed, the more there will be challenges to our military around the world.

Pershing or Lance?
I was Lance.
Loved the live-fire demo training and the M61 shaped charge device.

At least they weren't boarding a helicopter on the roof.

Congrats, Odumbo, on yet another screwup.

Stewardesses, apparently.

You were there for the end of the weapons system. A college friend was assigned there, as were a couple of my LOC classmates. I was an ARTEP evaluator for 1/32 once and it was my college friend’s platoon. My/our time was 1978-81.

Yep.
I ditched the 1/32 to go up to core arty before the final withdrawal. I wonder if they ever had that massive “expend all ordinance” shoot in Crete. I was at the final 8” shoot at Graf and they were getting really creative trying to expend all ammo.
