A North Carolina officer shot dead a 74-year-old man whose concerned family had called the police and asked to check on him.
Officer Josh Lefevers arrived at the home of James Allen just before midnight on Sunday morning and announced he was entering the residence when Allen approached him with a handgun and refused to put it down, police said.
Lefevers then shot and killed him.

After about 90 years being part of and observing the US, including the war in the Pacific, I have a feeling that the ‘cops’ of today at least many of them, only care about being an authoritive person. The gun toting law enforcers in todays US are conditioned to be ready to go after so called civilians to make a more structured society.
The old guy didn't shoot...Apparently he knew where the cop was while the cop didn't know where he was...
My guess is the old guy was waiting to see who was coming thru his broken down door...
If you walk into a room and a gun is pointed at you, are you going to draw your weapon and shoot??? Of course not...You'd be dead...The cops gun was already drawn and the second he saw the old guy's gun, he killed him...
I never used the word "missions" so I have no idea why you put that word in quotes and attributed it to me.
And as I pointed out earlier in the thread it was the fire department that broke into the house and it was the EMS who came in to see if there was a medical emergency.

You should do some research into how many police calls are domestic related, including welfare checks. They may not be social workers, but their work is closely related.
Cops don’t have to wait for you to shoot in order for them to draw their guns and return fire. It’s understood that they may not get a chance to return fire if they have to wait to be fired upon.
It’s no different for you, as a citizen. If somebody has their weapon drawn on you, you don’t have to wait until you’ve been fired upon to return fire.
I’m not saying that cops should be nannies and check up on people, just because we’ve requested them to do so.
However, we’ve accepted that as part of the role of the police as they serve the community and when they perform this role they are allowed to act extra-Constitutionally.
I have no qualms whatsoever calling the police in a distant city to check on a family member.

As for answering your phone or not, that’s a great thing to do to your family members that are worried about you.

You can’t arrest me officer. He came in late last night with lipstick on his collar. I put my gun under the pillow. As soon as my alarm went off I shot him. It was probably only 10 seconds!

Who is "We"? And what is this extra-constitutional authority you have given police? I understand wanting to have other people's welfare in your heart, but it belongs there and not in the state's hands.
A good healthy conversation though! It would seem we've narrowed it all down to giving up one's constitutional rights for the convenience of peace of mind on the welfare of others detached from your control.
That is so bogus. Cops are notorious for their poor marksmanship, easy to find so many instances where there is a hail of bullets from the police and no one get a nick. And for the other, ever watch the cop shows? So many cops with their guns out, no shots, they put them back in their holster.
Gracious, some on here sound like the leftists with their war on law enforcement. I, too, wonder why the family didn’t check on gramps themselves, or if he was a dangerous man - and they were afraid to? We need more details, I think.
Same thing happened here in San Ramon, CA when a concerned friend who lived elsewhere, called the SRPD and asked them to check on a woman resident. She made the mistake of picking up a kitchen knife and was shot to death in her own home.
As you say, never call the cops for anything. They may be useless, but they do know how to kill you!

I was describing their modern trait of killing any and all possible threats.
While you describe yourself as their arch enemy, I’m not, I just want to regain control over our police.
